ROLLER-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Nov. 9, 19115.
Application filed April 22, 1915. Serial No. 23,210.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that T, CHARLES SANFORD, Sn, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Madoc, in the Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Locks, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to improvements in roller locks and the objects of the invention are to eliminate friction, to facilitate in securing the bolt in av withdrawn or unlocked position, to simplify the construction and generally to adapt the several parts to better perform the functions required of them, and it consists essentially of the improved construction particularly described and set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings forming part of the same. 7
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a mortise lock embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the internal mechanism with the bolt in a locked position. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the internal mechanism with the bolt withdrawn. Fig. 4L- is a perspective view of a rim lock embodying the present invention. Fig. 5 is an elevation of the internal mechanism. Fig. 6 is a transverse section of the improved mortise lock shown in Fig. 1. perspective view of the face plate and interlocking catch member. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the catch member.
Like characters of reference refer to like parts in the several drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the improved lock comprising the casing 1 adapted to house the internal mechanism and provided with a removable cover 2 secured thereon in any convenient manner. The cover is provided near the top edge with an orifice 3 adapted to register with the orifice 4 in the casing body and is further provided with a key hole 5 located near the lower edge and designed to register with the key hole 6 i in the casing body.
Located between the key holes 5 and 6 and the orifices 3 and 4: are rectangular orifices 7 and 8 in the cover and easing respectively, in which rectangular orifices the catch member 9 is slidably mounted. The lock casing may be attached to the door in any suitable manner and carries on its outer edge a rectangular orifice 10 adapted to engage the tongue 11 of the bolt 12, the upper and lower Fig. 7 is a.
faces of which are curved and terminate on the inner end in semi-cylindrical jaws 13 and 14:, the latter of which engages with the cylindrical projection 3% formed integral with the casing body. The lower curved face of the bolt 12 is designed to make engagement with the roller 15 rotatablymounted on the pin 16 formed integral with or otherwise secured to the casing.
Coacting with the cylindrical jaw 13 is a tumbling lever 17 pivotally mounted at the lower end to the pin 18, the upper end terminating in a cylindrical member 19 adapted to engage the said cylindrical jaw and actuate the locking bolt. This lever is preferably offset and recessed intermediate of its length to engage the crank lever 20 and is further provided at the lower edge of the recess with an angular projection 21 designed to coact with the adjustable catch member 9. The crank lever 20 is provided with a squared orifice 22 through the upper end thereof with which the usual handle spindle engages and is pivotally mounted in the orifices 3 and i in the cover and easing re spectively, the lower end of the lever carrying the roller. 23 rotatably mounted thereon.
Located adjacent to the pin 18 are guides 24; with which the tongue of the horizontally disposed wardplate 25 slidably engages, the said ward plate being provided on its lower edge with a curved recess 26 and on its upper edge with a pair of teeth 27 adapted to coact with the vertically disposed locking plate 28 mounted in the casing.
,The locking plate 28 is substantially L- shaped and provided on its upper end with a tongue 29 making sliding engagement with the inner end of the casing and the guide ,member 30 mounted therein and is further provided intermediate of its length with a downwardly disposed angle projection 31 designed to slidably engage with the stops 32 and 33 formed integral with the casing.
The usual face plate 36 is provided on the doors and carries a bifurcated guide member 37 adapted to slidably engage with the recessed edges of the catch member 9.
lVhen the lock is assembled the key is in serted in the key holes 5 and 6 and when operated engages with the vertically disposed locking plate 28 elevating the same and disengaging the angle projection 31 from engagement with the teeth 27 so permitting the ward plate 25 being operated outwardly to engage the tumbling lever 17 whereupon the vertical locking plate 28 descends under gravity and the angle projection 31 is located between the teeth 27 so looking the bolt in an outward position.
Should it be found desirable to secure the bolt in a locking position from the inside of the room without using the key it is only necessary to actuate the interlocking catch member 9 to engage with the projection 21 on the tumbling lever 17 thereby preventing the said leverbeing operated by the crank lever 20.
In withdrawing the tongue 11 of the locking bolt 12 from engagement with the usual guard plate placed in the jamb of the door, it may be found essential to control the motion of the said bolt and to this end 1 provide a projecting member 35 adapted to engage with the upper curved face of the said bolt and cooperate with the cylindrical projection 3i to'obtainthe desired result.
It will be clearly seen that in the operation of a lock of this description that the friction is greatly reduced and all the ad vantages found in other locks are obtained by the simplified mechanism above described.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claims, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the'accompanying specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
'lVhat I claim as my invention is:
1. A look of the class described comprising a casing, a detachable cover mounted thereon, a. locking bolt having an integral tongue provided with curved upper and lower edges terminating in semi-cylindrical jaws, a roller adapted to engage with the lower curved edge of the locking bolt, an offset tumbling lever pivotally mounted at one end, the other end terminating in a cylindrical projection adapted to engage with one of the said cylindrical aWs, means for operating the tumbling lever anda cylindrical stop member coacting with the second semicylindrical jaw, substantially as described.
2. A look of the class described comprising a casing, a detachable cover mounted there on, a locking bolt, a tumbling lever pivotally mounted at one end and cooperating at the other end with'the locking bolt, an integrail projection on the tumbling lever, a
catch member slidably mountedin the casing adapted to engage the projection, guide members, a ward plate provided with a tongue slidably mounted in the guide mem here and having a curved recess in the lower edge and a pair of teeth on the upper edge, alocklng plate substantially L-shaped provided with an integral tongue slidably mounted in the casing, stop members, and
an angle projection integral with the locking plate adapted to engage the stop members,
substantially as described. a p
