JOHN HUNCIKER, OF EVANSTON, ILLINOIS.
SASH-LOCK.
Application filed January 24, 1913.
To all 10/10 177, it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN HUNoInnR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Evanston, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sash locks and the object of my improvement is to provide a sash lock l aving a frame inclosing a spring actuated bolt with projections on said frame and bolt to maintain the bolt in unlocking position and limit the movement of said bolt. Also to permit of the ready removal of said bolt from the frame when so desired.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a fragmentary section of a window equipped with a sash lock embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a side View of the locking plate used in the construction, and Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section taken on line 83 in Fig. 1.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the accompanying drawings comprises an upper sash 4t and a lower window sash 5 which are of conventional or any preferred form of construction. Secured on. the top of lower sash 5 is a casing 6, secured by means of screws 7 or their equivalent. The casing 6 is preferably hollowed out on its under side forming a housing for the body of the bolt 8. The bolt 8 is slidably mounted in the casing 6 in a manner to engage openings 9 in a locking plate 10. The openings 9 in the locking plate 10 are preferably beveled at their lower edges so that in moving the window sash downwardly the bolt 8 will automatically be lifted from the openings 9 to permit of lowering the sash 5 readily. The lowermost opening in the plate 10 is a recess 11 and is not provided with an inclined surface at its lower side but formed substantially as shown. The plate 10 is secured to the upper sash 4 by means of screws 12 or their equivalent.
On the body of the bolt 8 is a collar 13 adapted to engage the compression spring 14 which normally maintains the bolt 8 in looking position. On one side of the collar Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 14:, 1913.
Serial No. 743,945.
13 is a projection 14/ which is adapted to engage a lug 15 on the inner side of the easing 6 to define the terminal of the bolt 8 in its locking position. The projection 1% is formed only on one side of the collar 13 so that upon turning the bolt 8 until its handle 9 reaches the position indicated by the dotted lines 9 in Fig. 3, said projection 1 f will pass under the lug 15 to allow the bolt to be removed from the casing 6. The perforation in the casing 6 in which the bolt is mounted is sufficiently large to allow the handle portion 9 of bolt 9 to be removed from the casing 6 after the locking end has been removed from the casing. On the outer side of the casing 6 are adapted to engage the handle 9 tomaintain the bolt 8 in unlocking position as indicated by dotted lines 17 in Figs. 1 and 3.
In raising the sash or lowering the sash 4: the locking bolt 8 is preferably moved to its unlocking position until the desired opening 9 is reached by the bolt when the handle 9 is turned until it slips from the lugs 16 to permit the bolt 8 to enter the desired opening 9 whereupon the sashes and 5 will be locked in their positions. T o raise sash 4 or lower sash 5 it is only necessary to move the sash since the bolt 8 will slide on the inclined surface of openings 9 to permit of such movement. The bolt 8 may be turned until the handle 9 rests on one of the lugs 16 to lock the bolt 8 in its unlocking position and to prevent it from engaging the open ings 9 upon closing the sashes.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into eflect, this is capable of variation and modification without depart ing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A sash lock comprising a hollow casing with one side open and an inwardly extending lug on its inner side; a window sash forming a closure for said open side; a spring-pressed bolt mounted in said casing near one side thereof; a projection on one side of said bolt adapted to engage said lug to prevent displacement of said bolt in said are two lugs 16 which.
casing and to engage said Window sash to name to this specification in the presence of prevent complete rotation of SL1d bolt; and two subscribing Witnesses.
lugs having rounded upper ends on the outer T T side of said casing adapted to lock said bolt JOHL CIKER' in inoperative condition, substantially as de- Vitnesses: scribed.
i i JOSHUA R. H. PoT'rs,
In testimony whereof I have signed my HELEN F/LILms.
