IMPROVEMENT EN TRAMP SAFE-GUARDS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 213,969, dated April 8, 1879; application filed February 10, 1879.

-Guards; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the ac- 'coin panying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. My invention has for its object to prevent the opening of a door beyond a certain distance, thus enabling one to see and converse from the inside without allowing thcvoutside party to come in 5- also, a door can be left parlially open for ventilation, and at the same time be locked against intrusion from the outside.

My invention consists in arranging a fixture or loop, to be fastened to the door, open at the outer end, and provided at the inner end with three different steps or widths of bear ings, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and attaching to the casing of the door an arm with certain notches and shoulders correspondin g with and designed to work in combination with the different steps or parts of the loop, and so hinged that it may be swung out of or into the loop above described, the effect being to allow the opening of the door to as many different distances as there are notches or shoulders on the arm, and to allow the arm to he swung out of the loop and against the wall when it is not desired to use it.

The operation is as follows: -The arm is swung into the loop, and the door is opened. The shoulder on the end of the arm, acting in combination with the widest part of the loop, prevents it from being opened any farther, and by pressing either of the notches on the arm into the corresponding width of the loop the opening of the door is limited to that point.

Having thus described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as new, and for which I'desire Letters Patent, is-- The arm D, having shouldered recessed p01" tion I, and notches H H, in combination with the loop X, having steps A, B, and 0, and shoulders K K, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
