1 Claim.
This invention relates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to a novel comb especially well adapted for use in the practice of barbering.
An object of the invention is to provide a device of the type so constructed that a barber may efficiently use the comb in cutting hair in areas of depression on the human head.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the type which will facilitate the cutting operation on a curving hair line or the like.
Other and further objects of the invention will appear as the description proceeds, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a plan view in elevation of an im proved comb embodying the invention.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral IIl refers to the device generally, having a body I I, provided with a side edge IS that has a plurality of relatively coarse teeth I2 and a plurality of relatively ne teeth I3 laterally extending therefrom, as in conventional combs of the type. The comb I is tapered reducedly toward the end having the ne tooth section I3.
The comb body II on its tooth edge or side edge IS has a pair of convex enlargements II and i8 formed at its ends, such enlargements forming arcuate bases for portions of the teeth I2 and I3 with said teeth disposed radially thereon to form curved ends defined by the outer ends of rsaid teeth.
The enlargements strengthen the axially smaller radial teeth portions I9 and 20 and such teeth I9 and 2d fan out from the enlargements. Extending substantially axially from each end of the body are guards 2| and 22. Each guard has a curved side edge that merges in with the back edge of the body and forms end curved prolongations thereof. Each guard also has a side edge 23, which side edge is angularly offset from the edge I6 of the body and lies alongside the outer- 2 most tooth of the teeth sections I9 and 20. The guards protect the relatively small and ne teeth of such teeth sections.
In use, in the operation of harboring, the comb It may be used in the conventional manner. The ends of the comb, by reason ofthe radial teeth and the curves defined by the outer ends thereof, may be used in cutting hair in and about various areas of depression on the head surface.
It will be understood that the device is capable of various modifications in structure and design, Without departing from the spirit of the invention, within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed and desired to be secured by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
In a comb, a body having a straight side edge provided With laterally extending teeth, said side edge having a laterally extending convex enlargement spaced frorn each of its ends, each of said enlargements having an inner end and an outer end, teeth fanning out from each of said enlargements and radially extending therefrom and having their outer ends lying in a curve about the enlargements, said teeth on each of the enlargements providing end curved continuations of the toothed surface provided by the laterally extending teeth and an integral guard on each end of the body and extending substantially axially therefrom beyond the outer ends of the enlargements and having a side edge angularly offset from the side edge of the body, said side edge of the guard lying alongside the outermost tooth on each of the enlargements and said guard forming a protection for the teeth on the enlargements.
