Description
C. A. MOORE Oct. 25, 1938.
COMB
Filed May 17, 1938 Sum/mm;
Patented Oct. 25, 1938 00MB" I Charlie. Adams Moore, Nashville,.,Tenn'., assignor of one-half to James A. Foster, Nashville, Tenn.
' Application. May'17', 1938; Serial No. 208,446 5. Claims. (Cl..1'32--1 1).
This invention relates to a comb tion more particularly to a device'of this kind to be employed by a tonsorial operator in cuttinghair, andit is an object of the invention toprovide a comb which can be employed with equal facility by a right hand operator or a left hand operator in gauging and tapering out the hair to a medium length on the'back and sides'of the head and also in trimming the hair ontop of the" head. f
Another objectof the invention isto-provide a comb which can be employed with particular advantage in gauging the hair at the*templeparticularly around and over the ears.
A further object of the invention is to provide a comb which is constructed in a manner to provide effective means for protecting the ear from being cut by the shears or clippers while cutting the hair and in a manner whereby the ear need not be moved from its natural position while hair is being cut adjacent thereto.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved comb whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwisemore convenient and advantageous for use, as will'be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of my invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein:-
Figure l is a view slightly in perspective of a comb constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional View taken substantially on the line 22 of Figure 1;
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
My improved comb as herein disclosed comprises three sections A, B and C, the end sec-v tions A and C being substantially coplanar While the intermediate section B is laterally offset a desired distance with respect to the sections A and C. The section B, however, is rigidly connected at its extremities with the opposed. end portions of the sections A and C by the relatively flat posts I of desired length. The section A is used by a left hand operator and the section C by a right hand operator while the offset section B is used by either left or right hand operandhas relaators in cutting the hair arou'nd and over the ears:' q
'Ih'e' sections A andzC' are substantially duplicateinconstruction and; each is provided, along one"longitudinal margin with the coarse teeth 2 and along the opp'osite'longitudinal margin with the1 fine teeth' 3: jTliese coarse teeth are used in gauging and tapering out the hair to a medium length at thefback 'andsid'es of the head and also used in trimming hair on top of the head. Between adjacent teeth gg r 3 the marginal edge of either'section A'or Cfis beveled, as at 4, said bevel being disposedfinwardly' from the outer face of the section} nor 'Cjwhereby isprovided an outer sharp edge" 5 to provide means to takeup hair that may be close to the scalp to force the same up on the gauge bevel 4. The inner face of each n of the teeth is curved, as at 6, from the outer end thereof, said curved face being continued inwardly of the section A or C proper to a high point I which constitutes a ridge extending lengthwise from end to end of the section A or C. The outer end of each of sharp to further assure the lifting of the hair from the scalp and which, in fact, is more effective for thatpurpose than the sharp edge 5 hereinbefore referred to. v
The intermediate section B is also provided along'one longitudinal margin with the coarse teeth 8 and along the opposite longitudinal margin with the fine teeth 9. These teeth'8 and 9 are substantially the same construction as the teeth 2 and 3 hereinbefore referred to except that the curved face I 0 of each of the teeth 8 and 9 is opposed to the curved face of atooth 2 or 3. In the section B the high point for the curved face ID of each of the teeth 8 and 9 is at the outstanding ridge I I immediately adjacent to said teeth 8 and 9 or, in other words, there is a separate high point or ridge ll forv each set of teeth 8 and 9.
The coarse teeth 8 of the intermediate section B are used for the same purpose as the coarse teeth 2 of the sectionsA and C. The fine teeth 3 of the.
sections A and C and the 'fine teeth, 9 of the section B are used when it is desired to cut the hair from a feather edge to a minimum length and to assure a uniform length in .tapering edges of thehair.
It is believed to be obvious that the particular purpose of the section B is to taper the hair around or adjacent an ear from a feather edge to a minimum length and also to provide a safeguard for the ear against shears or clippers.
From the foregoing description it'is thought the teeth is very to be obvious that a comb constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled and operated, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and'modification without departing from the principles and spirit thereof and'for this reason I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim:-
1. A comb comprising three sections, the in termediate section being laterally offset with re- 7 space to the end sections, each of said sections having a row of coarse teeth along one longitudinal margin thereof and a row of fine teeth along the opposite longitudinal margin.
2. A comb comprising three sections, the intermediate section being laterally offset with respect to the end sections, each of said sections having a row of coarse ,teeth along one longitudinal margin thereof and a row of fine teeth along the opposite longitudinal margin, the faces of the teeth of the end sections opposed to the teeth of the intermediate section being disposed inwardly from their outer ends on a bevel,'the
outer extremities of said teeth of the end sectionshaving substantially a feather edge. r 3. A comb comprising three sections, the intermediate section being laterally 7' offset with respect to the end sections, each of said sections having a row'of coarse teeth along'one longitudi- 3 5{Il2.1 margin thereof and a row of fine teeth along having a row of coarse teeth along one longitudinal margin thereof and a row of fine teeth along the opposite longitudinal margin, the faces of the teeth of the end sections opposed to the teeth'of the intermediate section being disposed inwardly from their outer ends on a bevel, the outer extremities of said teeth of the end sections having substantially'a feather edge, the faces of the teeth of the intermediate section opposed to the teeth of the end sections being also disposed on a bevel inwardly from their outer ends, said outer ends constituting substantially feather edges. g Y
5. A comb comprising three sections, the intermediate section being laterally offset with respect to the end sections, each of said sections having a row of coarse teeth along one longitudinal margin thereof and a .row of fine teeth along the opposite longitudinal margin, the intermediate section being of a length to extend over the ear of a'person to afford protection for the ear during a hair cutting operation.
