SAFETY RAZOR Filed March 17, 1944 Inventor der/Lf C. @WE/Q5.
Patented Sept. 26, 1944 UNITED STATES PATENT .OFFICE SAFETY RAZOR` Orville o. Bowers, New castle, Pa. Application March 17, 1944, serial No. 526,941
" s claims. (Cl. :io-3a) This invention relates to safety razors, and has more particular reference to the provision of such a razor with a blade adapted to be readily used to effectively and quickly trim the mustache or the eyebrows.
A specific object of the present invention is to provide an improved form of safety razor blade having a rectangular notch in the cutting edge thereof near an end of the same, said notch being of a predetermined width corresponding to the desired width of the mustache or eyebrows to be trimmed, whereby the blade may be eilectively used to trim the mustache or eyebrows along the longitudinal sides thereof, cutting off to the skin all stray or projecting hairs and leaving the mustache or eyebrows of uniform Width from end to end.
Another object of the present invention is to provide a razor blade of the above kind in which such notches are provided in the cutting edge of the blade adjacent each end of the latter, Whereby the blade may be used with equal facility in trimming eyebrows over either the right or left eye. 1 l Still another object of the present invention isto provide a blade ofthe above kind in which the inner longitudinal walls of the notches are provided with cutting edges so that the eyebrows` or mustache may be trimmed as to the length of the hairs left to form the mustache or eyebrows, simultaneously with trimming the mustache or eyebrows as to width.
Other objects and features of the present invention will become apparent as the nature of the invention is better understood, and the same consists in the novel form, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawing and claimed. l l l In the drawing, wherein like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views:
Figure l. is a plan view of a form of blade constlucted in accordance with the present invention,` adapted to be used as a trial blade in determining the width of notch which any particular customer desires in the blade purchased by him.
Figure 2 is an edge elevational wardly at Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure 4 is a plan View of a razor blade constructed in accordance with the present invenview looking uption and 'having notches of one predetermined` size ina cutting edge thereof.
Figure 5 is a transverse section taken on line 5 5 of Figure 4.
Figure 6y is a view similar to Figure 5 showing a modification of the invention.
Figure'l is a plan view illustrating a modification of the trial blade shown in Figure 1.
Figure 8 is an outer end view of a safety razor employing a double-edge razor blade embodying the present invention, and
Figure 9 is a transverse section taken on line 9 9 of Figure 8.
Referring in detail to the drawing, the presentinvention contemplates the provision of a safety razor blade 5 having a longitudinal cutting edge 6 and provided in said-edge with a rectangular notch 'l of appreciable depth and of a predetermined width. Preferably, the blade 5 has two notches 1, one adjacent each end of the blade and spaced similar distances from the ends thereof. The notches 1 are intended to correspond in width to the width of the users mustache or eyebrow after being trimmed. The invention is adaptable to either single or double-edge blades, and has been illustrated by way of example as applied to a double-edge blade whose other edge 6a is of conventional form or not provided ,with notches so that it can be used in the regular way for shaving.
As clearly illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the inner longitudinal walls of the recesses 'l may be provided with cutting edges 8 located parallel with and inwardly of the main cutting edge 6 and adapted to trim the hairs of the eyebrow or mustache as to length while simultaneously trimming the mustache or eyebrows alongthe longitudinal sides thereof by means of the portions of the cutting edge 6 at opposite `sides of the notch l being used. When a notch is provided near both ends of the blade, said blade may be used with equal facility for trimming eyebrows over either the right or left eye.
As shown in Figure 6, however, the inner longitudinal walls of each notch may be left flat or withouta cutting edge, as at 9. In that event, the blade may be only used to trim the mustache or eyebrows as to width and not as to length of the hairs left to form the mustache or eyebrow.
In commercializing blades constructed in accordance with the present invention, it is intended to supply each customer with a trial blade, such as the trial blade 5' in Figures 1 to 3, inelusive. This blade has two longitudinalcutting edges in each of which is formed two notches 'l' of different predetermined Widths. Thus, the blade will have notches of four different standard widths, and blades 5 may be manufactured' notches of the size which he determines suitablel for his use after use of the trial blade '5'.
In using the blade of the kind shown in Figure 4, it will be clamped between the conventionalguard plate I0 and the conventional outer clamping plate II in the usual way. However, when the inner longitudinal walls of the notches are provided with cutting edges 8, it will also be necessary to provide the' outer clamping plate withV cooperating notches I2 sothat the cutting edges 8 will be uncovered to have effective cutting action in trimming the mustache and eyebrows.V
Special clamping plates for existing makes of razors can be furnished for this purpose having notches of the required depth and width. Also, the teeth of the guard plate will be omitted at the notches.
VAs indicated generally inFigure '7, the trial I and/orcommercial blades may be manufactured with the notches thereof normally closed by a knock-out portion I3 connected to thev body of the blade by portions weakened along the lines indicated at I4. While this has been illustrated in connection with a trial blade in Figure 7, it is obvious that the same idea may be embodied in the construction of a commercial shaving blade. g I3 are removed to provide the recesses in the cutting edges of the blade, the inner longitudinal walls of said recesses or notches will not have cutting edges and will therefore conform to the modification of Figure 6 as to the character of the notches and the function which the blade may perform.
In the form of trial blade shown in Figures l to 3, inclusive, the inner longitudinal walls of the notches are provided with cutting edges so Of course, when the knock-out portionsV l byv movement of the blade longitudinally of thev mustache or eyebrow, the inner longitudinal wall 4 predetermined width and having its inner longithat this trial blade may be used to trim the length of the hairs of the mustache or eyebrows as Well as to trim the mustache and eyebrows as to Width.
In the case of a single-edge razor blade, some will of course have to be purchased which are provided with the notches so that the razor may v be used for trimming the mustache or the eyebrows, while others without notches may be purchased' for ordinary shaving purposes. It will of course be understood that in using the present blade, the eyebrow or mustache is centered in the notch 'I of the blade 5 and is trimmed as to Width by simply moving the head of the razor longitudinallyA of the mustache or eyebrow.
From the foregoing description, it is believed that theV construction and operation, as well as the advantages of the present invention, will be readily understood and appreciated by those skilled in the art.
What I claim is:
1. In a safety razor, a razor blade having a longitudinal cutting edge and provided in said cutting edge with a rectangular notch of predej termined width to adapt the bladefor use in trimming a mustache or the eyebrows as to width by movement of the blade longitudinally of the mustache or eyebrow.'
2. In? a safety razor, a razor`r blade having a longitudinalv cutting edge and provided in said cutting edge with a rectangular notch of predetermined width to adapt the blade for use/in trimming a mustache or the eyebrows as to width ofY said notch beingV provided with a. cutting edge so that the blade may simultaneouslyvtrim the mustache as to length of hairs left while trimmingthe mustache or eyebrow as to width.
3, In a safety razor including a guard plate and an outer clamping plate, a, razor blade clamped between saidplates and having a. notch inthe cutting edge thereof, said notch being of tudinal wall provided with a cutting edge, the clamping plate being provided with a notch uncovering the last-named cutting edge and registered with `the notch of the blade.
