UNITED STATES JOHN W. BURKE, 0F DEL RIO, TEXAS.
, F i BABBERS COMB,
Application filed August 25, 1925. Serial No. 52,441.
This invention relates to improvements in combs, and relates more particularly to combs especially well adapted for use by barbers.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved comb for barbers use, having teeth so arranged thereon as to permit of the hair being readily picked up on either side of the head in a manner for convenient cutting by scissors or shears.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved comb embodying a plurality of teeth portions having the teeth thereof so arranged in angular relation to one another as to permit of the comb being reversed about its longitudinal axis for disposing the teeth in a reversed angular position upon movement of the comb in a straight path through the hair.
Still further objects of the invention are to provide improved combs of the character described, which may be reasonably manufactured; combs which are durable and effective in use; and combs embodying angularly disposed teeth so arranged as to permit of effective use of the combs either by right or left handed operators.
Other objects and advantages of the in vention will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an improved barbers comb constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is an enlarged end elevation of the comb, looking at that end carrying the course or straight teeth.
Figure 3 is an enlarged transverse section on line 3--3 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows; and,
Figure 4 is an enlarged end elevation of the comb, looking at that end carrying the angularly disposed teeth.
Referring to the drawing in detail, andv wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views; the letter A designates generally a frame or body portion including a substantially fiat transverse medial portion B having a back section C extending from one end thereof, and having extending in an opposite direction from a point substantially midway of the portion B, a central,
rib D which preferably tapers slightly to ward its free end.
Extending preferably at right angles from one edge of the back section C, are relatively coarse teeth 5 which may be of ordinary construction, and which may be used for direction to the opposite side of the frame A. from which the teeth 5 extend; and from a point adjacent the medial portion B to the end 6. This central rib D has extending from its opposite edge, relatively fine teeth 8 which extend at a like angular degree from the rib D as do the teeth 7, but slope toward the medial portion B. These teeth 8 also grow shorter toward the free end 6 of the rib D, thus presenting a smaller end for the comb which will not interfere with the cutting instrument when trimming the hair close, or shading the hair. By observing Figure 1, it will be seen that the longitudinal axes of the teeth 7 extend in parallel relation with the longitudinal axes of the teeth 8 disposed at the opposite side of the rib D. \Vith such angular positioning of the teeth 7 and 8, it will be seen by observing Figure 1, that when the comb is reversed about its longitudinal axis, the teeth 8 will be disposed uppermost, and will. extend in a reversed angular position from the showing of the teeth 7 as illustrated in Figure 1, thus permitting of the hair being picked up in a like manner at each side oi: the head for being out.
One edge of the flat medial portion B of the frame A, and proferabtv at that side of the comb from which the teeth 5 and 8 extend, is cut out as :it 10 for providing a centrally disposed finger hold into which the operator may place one linger when using the comb. As will be seen, this finger hold 1.0 is formed in one edge of the comb between the teeth sections 5 and 8 thus permitting of its being brought into use when using either end of the comb.
In use, and wherein but one example of use will be described, the comb is moved in-a straight upward path through the hair at one side ofthe head, and in which movement, the teetl1'7 \vill pick up thehair and by virtue of their inclined relation, will move the hairs in a slight direction toward the front of the head should it be the hair at the right side of the head which is be ing' positioned for cutting. The comb'may then be reversed about its longitndinal a vis for disposing the teetli'S in position for use, and it can be seen that upon straight upward movement of the comb through the hair at the le'tt side of thehead, that these hairs at the left of the head will also be moved in a slight direction toward the frontof the head, as werethe hairs at the right of the head n'ioved forwardly by the teeth 7. Thus" it will be seen that the/ hair may be picked. up in a like manner for cutting: purposes'at each side of the head. It will. of coursebe apparent that should it be desirable to move the hairslightly toward the back of the head, a reversed procedure will be followed; that is, the teeth 7 will be used at the left of the head. and the teeth 8 used at the right side of the head.
These teeth portions 7 and 8 will also serveas effective means for the removal of dandruff or similar scurf formations on the head,.since upon reversal ofthe comb, a crosswise combing of the head may be accomplished.
From the foregoing description of this invention it will be apparent that an improved comb for use by barbers has been provided, embodying novel features of construction for allowing the barber to use either edge of the comb in an effective mannor as he may see it for the particular hair cutting operation being performed.
Various changes may be made to the specific form of the invention herein shown and described; as well as adaptation of the combto various other uses, without departinijfrom the spiritof the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim l. A comb comprising a rib porlion ha \in; teeth projecting in opposite angular relation from each edge thereof.
2. A comb comprising a rib portion harin; angularlv disposed teclh carried by each edge thereof, with the longitudinal axes ol' one set of teeth extending in parallel rclation to the lonnitni'linal axcs of the oppositc set of teeth.
In a comb comprising a l'ramo onibodvini; a rib portion, teeth inclined at an angle from one edge of: the rib port ion. and teeth of similar formation as said first .ni'cin tioned teeth, inclined at a like degree but in a reversed direction, from the opposite edge of the rib portion.
5%. In a comb comprising a frame embodying a medial portion, a back portion extending from one edge of the medial portion, a rib extending in an opposite direction from the medial portion and at a point midway thereof, teeth extending in right angular relation from one edge of said back portion, and angularly disposed teeth car ried by each edge of the rib portion and extending in opposite directions with respect to the axis of the rib portion.
