Patented Apr. 27, 1954 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE' MEANS FOR SUPPORTING SHORTS FROM THE WAISTBAND OF THE TROUSERS Hugh A. Robertson, Portland, Oreg. Application September 24, 1951, Serial No. 247,922
1 Claim.
This invention relates generally to fasteners for clothing and particularly to a means for supporting shorts from the waist band of the trousers.
The main object of this invention is to provide an exceedingly simple and inexpensive fastener for an undergarment whereby it may be suspended from the Waist line of the outer garment and whereby the connection can be easily made or removed and whereby there will be no tendency to injure the garment or appear ob- J'ectionably bulky.
It is a further object to so construct the device that it can easily be adapted to unite various forms of garment I accomplish these and other objects in the manner set forth in the following specifications as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of the device showing its relation to the garments.

Like numbers of reference refer to the same or similar parts throughout the several views.
Referring in detail to the drawing there is shown the relative positions of the waist line of a pair of shorts l0 and a waist line of a pair of trousers I I.
Referring to the device itself, it consists of a hinge l2 which is normally disposed between the garments l0 and II. To the hinge I2 i at tached one end I 3 of a U-shaped trouser engaging hook l4, whose end I5 is hared outwardly and which hook is made of spring material.
A point I6 is formed out of the material in the end l3 or affixed thereto as is most conven- The member M is provided with side notches [1 near its closed end.
Also attached to the hinge I2 is a shorts engaging hook l8 having an opening 9 formed therethrough, through which the point 16 can project when the members 13 and I8 are brought The end 20 of the hook I8 is turned backwardly to form a spring arm 21, whose end 22 is flared outwardly to facilitate the insertion of the shorts waist band therein. The hook l8 has the outwardly extending cars 23 which engage the notches I1 and hold the hinge memher l3 and [8 together when the device is in use. Against the inner side 24 of the member 2! is secured a semi-circular boss 25 into which the point l6 can extend.
The operation of the device is as follows: The device is first brought into engagement with the waist band of the shorts III, as shown in Fig. 2, and the parts 13 and I8 are brought together causing the material in the shorts to be held by the point l6 and the boss 25 where it will remain until the holding action of the ears 23 is overcome, thereby providing a dependable, in-
expensive and easily applied fastener for the undergarment.
It is a well-known fact that various types of clip fasteners have been employed for this purpose. While I have illustrated this device in connection with the fastening of a pair of shorts, the novel feature of this invention resides in the mechanism herein set forth and may be combined in various manner to suit the various kinds of clothing to be supported. The basic improvement resides in the hinged member between a pair of hooks in which on of the hinge members has a holding point penetrating the hook of the other portion and having means for holding the hinged portions together.
I claim:
A garment fastener 0f the class described comprising a strap hinge, the ends of which are outwardly and backwardly turned beyond the hinging point to form a pair of hooks, one of said hooks being adapted to engage the waist band of a pair of trousers and the other hook engaging the waist band of a pair of shorts, the trousers engaging strap having a point projecting therefrom, the shorts engaging strap having an opening therein adapted to receive said point, a semi-circular boss formed on said shorts engaging hook concentric with said opening and means for latching the portions of said hinge to gether when in a garment retaining position.
