CARPENTERS SQUARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 265,383, dated October 3, 1882.
Application filed November 16, 1881.
To all whom it m any concern Be it known that I, WILLIE H. OALLIHAN, of Galveston, in the county of Galveston and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carpenters Squares, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My improved square is intended to be plated with nickel or similar metal; and my invention has for its object such construction of the square that the plated surfaces will be protected from wear, and the square made stronger and better than those in common use.
My invention consists in forming the blades of the square with ribs or raised portions extending along or across them, and also of thickening the square at the angle. 7
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my improved square. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken on the line 00 m of Fig.1.
A represents the angle of the square, which is made thicker than the blades B 0. Along the blades are formed the ribs or raised portions to a at the edges and b b nearer the centor of the blade. These ribs or raised portions are upon both sides of the square. The sunken surfaces 0, d, and 6, between the ribs or raised portions, are plated. The faces of the ribs or raised portions need not be plated. In
(No model.)
use these raised portions or ribs and the thicken ed portion at the angle receive all the wear, and thus protect the plated surfaces. Besides, the blades are stronger and less liable to spring or bend by reason of the ribs being made on them, and thus the square is made more durable and better.
Though I haveshown four ribs on the sides of the blades, it is obvious that a greater or less number might be used, and that they might be variously arranged relative to each other and not depart from the principle of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A carpenters square having its blades B 0 provided with the longitudinal parallel ribs a (0 along its edges, and the intermediate 1ongitudinal parallel ribs, I) 12, substantially as herein shown and described, whereby the blades are strengthened and the spaces between ribs prevented from wear, as set forth.
2. The square constructed substantially as herein shown and described, made with the thickened angle A and the raised portions or ribs to and b, the sunken portions being plated, as and for the purposes set forth.
WILLIE HOYLE GALLIHAN.
