BARBED FENCING.

Be it known that I, THOMAS V. ALLIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barbed Fencing; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to the kind of barbed a plain flat strip having barbs at intervals along one edge, projecting in the plane of the strip and produced by punching or stilting the strip from the margin of a wider blank strip, so as to notch the residual portion and produce from said notches the barbs on the strip cut therefrom; and it consists of the said barbed strip so produced made with the sections between the barbs wider at the middle and gradually diminishing in width therefrom each way to the bases of the barbs, by which the strips are better capable of resisting tensile strain and, when twisted, the twist is much more uniform and the tensile power is greater, all as hereinafter fully described, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side View of my improved fencing-strip before being twisted. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same corrugated, and Fig. is'a side view of the complete barbed corrugated and twisted strip.

In this kind of fencing heretofore made the sections a between the barbs b have always been of uniform breadth the whole length between the bases of the barbs, the result of which is that the stretching due to tensile strain concentrates at the middle of the sections and they break thereat, while the strength near the barbs is not materially impaired, and this is aggravated by the twist, which also concentrates at the same points, there being but little or no twist near the barbs, which difficulties I have found may be effectually overcome by making the sections a a little wider in the middle and tapering therefrom each way to the bases of the barbs, as shown,thus graduating the power to resist tensile strain and so that the effect is uniform along the Whole length of said sections and in creasing the torsional resistance in the middle, which results in more uniform twist throughoutsaid sections, and this also makes the strength of the twisted article more uniform along said sections.

\Vhat I claim, and desire to ters Patent, is

l. The improved barbed fencing consisting of a plain flat strip having barbs projecting from one edge at intervals and in the plane of the strip, the intermediate sections of the strip between the barbs being wider at the middle and tapering each way therefrom to the bases of the barbs, substantially as described.

2. The improved barbed fencing consisting of a plain fiat strip having barbs projecting from one edge at intervals and in the plane of the strip, theintermediate sections of the strip between the barbs being wider at the middle and tapering each Way therefrom to the bases of the barbs, and said strip being twisted, substantially as described.

3. The improved barbed fencing consisting of a plain flat strip having barbs projecting from one edge at intervals and in the plane of the strip, the intermediate sections of the strip between the barbs being wider at the middle and tapering each way therefrom to the bases of the barbs, said strip being twisted and also corrugated, substantially as described.
