SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 735,207, dated August 4, 1903.

Beit known that I, JOHN CAMPBELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cascade Locks, in the county of Wasco and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gage-Squares; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use same.
This invention relates to gage-squares.
The object of the invention is to provide a square of this character which may be utilized as a gage or as a bevel square, a further object being to provide a square of this character which will be simple in construction, quickly adjusted for various uses, and which can be cheaply produced. Y
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Figurelisaside viewofasquare embodying the invention and showing in full lines the parts on one blade of the square in position for use as a gage and on the other blade in position for lengthening the blade, other positions of the gage being shown in broken lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l.
In the drawings, l denotes a square consisting of the blades 2 and 3, through the center of which are formed longitudinallydisposed slots 2a and 3a.
4t and 5 denotes gage members arranged upon the blades 2 and 3, respectively. The gage members are similar in construction and consist of plates of considerably less width than the blades of the square, one end of said plates being curved or offset, as at 6. The plates 4 and 5 are each provided with a longitudinally-disposed slot 7, said slot extending into the curved or odset portion of the plates, as shown.
9 denotes the bolts, which are adapted to pass through the slots in the square-blades and in the gage members and are adapted to receive winged clamping-nuts l0, the 5o bolts 9 vand nuts lO, in connection with the slots, permitting the gage members to be set in any desired positions.
In Fig. l the full-line position of the gage member 4E on the blade 2 shows the arrange- 55 ment of the gage for lengthening the blades of the square. The broken-line position a represents the arrangement of the same when usedVv as a vertical gage, and the broken-line position b shows the same arrangement of the 6o member when used as a bevel. The position of the gage member 5 on the blade 3 shows the arrangement of the same when in use as ahorizontal gage, this position also illustrating how the gage might be used for gaging or measuring the elements of a molding.
The gage-square as herein shown and described is particularly adapted for the use of stone-cutters, but will be found advantageous for all constructive work.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A square having longitudinally-slotted arms, gage-arms of less width than the arms 85 of the square, having offset inner ends and longitudinal slots, the inner ends ot which are also odset, and bolts in the respective slots of the square-arms and gage-arms, to adjustably connect the latter to the former, 9o substantially as described.
