COMBINED HOE AND WEEDER.
s pecination of Letters Patent. -fgnted 0131;, 12,1915,I
i Application filed April 1, i915. Serial No. 18,568.'
' To all whom 'it may concern Beit knownthat we, SAMUEL' M. Sermon# DER and JOHN Noawoom citizens of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Combined Hoes and Weeders; and we do hereby declare the following toI bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.v
l l Thisinvention relates to garden tools of the .combined hoe and vweeder type and has for a primary-object, to. obviate certain d isadvantages existing in the structure de- 590,583, Vlated Sept-.,- sth, 1897.
f In the above designated patented struc- 1 ture considerable di'liculty is experiencedin firmly locking .the band hoe and crust cutter in adjusted rrelative angular position, due in part to the use of but a single bolt which performs the. dual functionof a pivot and a lock.-
The present' invention contemplates' the provision of a novel head casting to which the band hoe and crustcutter are so atsol tache'd as to be easily and quickly adjusted, in angular lrelative pos1t1ons and then se? curely locked against displacement.
" Vith the above objects in view the invention consists of cert-ain novel details of construction and combinationv of parts liereiin after fully described and claimed,it being understood that' various modifications may be made in the minor details ofl construction within the scope of the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the tool. Fig. A2 is a cross sectional- Fig. 3 1s a view onthe line 2-2 Fig. 1. longitudinal sectional view showing the hoe in one operative position and the crustcuty ter .in one of its released positions. Fig. 4
is a longitudinal sectional view showing the hoe in a4 different operative position from.
that' are concentric with bolt yopenings 15 formed in the sides of the casting and communicating with the longitudinal slot l2. The casting is provided with 'a ferrule 16 which receives theI end 'of the handle.
The hoe 17 isformed preferably of a single length of strap metal having a straight blade 18, and vertical sides 19 rising from the ends thereof, the upper ends of the sides being bent inwardly as shown at 20 and then straightened to present parallel straight extremities 21 which are passedthrough the `longitudinal slot 12 in the head, such straight extremities being formed with alined slots The crust cutter Q3 comprises a straight central stripQi and side strips 25 offset at the lower ends from the central` strip, the upper ends of all of the strips being rigidly 'secured together by welding, riveting or otherwise to produce a straightshank` which is provided with a slot 26. Y
The shank ofthe crust cutter is passed in' between the shank or straight portions 21 of the hoe with the slots 22 of the hoe shank and the slot 26 .of the crust cutter shank registering one with the other, and the 'Shanks of the assembled crust cutter and hoe are then passed into the longitudinal slot 21 of the head 11.
A pivot 217 ispassed throughthe lower ends of the slots 22 and Q6 of 'the/hofI and crust cutter 'respectively and through the openings 15 in the sides ofthe head 1 1. A clamp bolt 30 is passed through the upper ends of the slots 22 and 26 ofthe hoe and crust cutter respectively and through the ar cuate slots 14 in t-he extensions 13 of the head 11, this bolt also having the usual head 31 on one end and being equipped with a thumb nut 32 on 'theopposite end, thev head and nut bearing against corresponding outer faces of the slotted extensions 13.
`When the crust cutter andhoe are in a common plane. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2,
both of" these members are rigidly secured' -l against relative movement b v means of the two bolts 27 and 30 rather than by means ofv a single bolt employed in the structure' crust cutter from position. The use of these.
two bolts above described positively prevent such an occurrence. f
hoe While at 'the same time'boththe pivot Ml' By referring now to Figs' and 4, it will loe seen that the crust cutter may be rocked.
released position on 'either side of the hoe, this heing eiected by first lremoving the clamp holt and rockingthe crust cutter to therdesired released position then insertthe clamp holt which prevents return. of the crust 'cutter within the plane of the .arcuate slots 1.4i, and when again' tightened -looth the clamp holt and the pivot as above described coact in rigidly holding the hoe in adjusted position. y l
. For attaching various* tools to the casting il, a square' opening 33 isformed in the end 'oit thecasting and af'set screw 34 is engaged through the casting and projects into this `opening. l A variety oi tools each having asquare shank may thusbe engaged 'in the opening, in the present embodiment a hoe blade 35 `being shown, as an illustration. What is claimed, iszi LA garden tool comprising a handle, a head mounted on one end ofsaid handle,
said head having a longitudinal slot, arciiate extensions on opposite sides of the head formed with arcuate slots registering one with the einer and disposed. concentrically with circular openings formed in the sides of said .head intermediate `the ends of and communicating with said. longitudinal slot,
, a band hoe having. slotted Shanks 'disposed4 Within said longitudinal slot, a'crust cutter having a slotted shank Vdisposed between-the Shanks of said hoe, 'a'pivot passed through said circular opening and through the vslots of the hoe and the crust cutter, and a .clamping bolt passedthrough said arcuate slots and through the slots ofthe hoe and crust cutter, whereby the hoe and crust cutter may lhe locked in ladjusted, positions at various relative angles. I
2. A g'arden tool comprising ahandle,l a longitudinally s lottedhead mounted on the handle, extensions on thehead, a band hoe lhaving slotted Shanks disposed Within the slot, a'crust cutter having a slotted shank arranged between the Shanks of the hoe, a pivot pin passed through the head and slots of the hoe and crust cutter, and a clamping bolt passed through the extensions and adjustable longitudinally thereof, said bolt being also passed', through the slots of the hoe and crust cutter, as and for the purpose set forth. 1
In testimony whereof, We aix our signa tures, in the presence of two Witnesses.
