Description

UNITED STATES PATENT A. F. AHRENS, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCARIFICATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 4,717', dated August 26, 1846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ADoLPH F. AHRENS, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new' and useful Improvements in the Surgical Instrument Called Scarificator, and that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description of the principle or character which distinguishes them from all other things before known and of the manner of making, constructing, and using the same, reference .bein had to the accompanying drawings, making p-art of this specification, in which- Figure l is a general view of the instrument complete; Fig. 2 is a section vertically through it; Fig. 3, is an interior view showing the moving parts.
The same letters indicate like parts in all the figures. l
In most instrument-s of this nature a very imperfect action is p-roduced and the blades or fleams are made to cut by a sweeping motion, and unequally; but in my improved machine all the blades are attached to a plate and move parallel to each other cutting with a drawing stroke and thus producing the most beneficial effects.
The construction of my improved scarifcator is as follows, viz: a case (a) made either cylindrical or polygonal having parallel ends through one of which are a series of slits as is common with such instruments, through which the fleams protrude when sprung. To the opposite end of the case there is attached a plate (b) by a screw (c) in such a way that said plate can be raised and lowered at will; upon this plate are hinged tw'o parallel plates (ci) which connect another plate (e) therewith similar to the connections of a parallel ruler and on this latter named plate (e) the fleams are screwed and are moved by a simple spring (f) which bears against one side of the case and is attached to one of the parallel plates (d) by a connecting bar (k) that passes through holes in both of them and is ointed by one end to the plate and is connected with the spring at the other as clearly shown in the drawing, Fig. 2, and also shown in Fig. 2 by red lines. The bar (71.) is hollow and into it a stem (z') slides having a feather on one side of it. See detached Fig. 4. At the end, which w'orks in a slotin said bar (it), and when drawn out is fastened by a bayonet catch so that it can be made to push back the plate (e) and set the spring. The other parts of the instrument are like those in common use.
Having thus fully described my improvements, what I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- The combination of a series of fleams with a plate constructed and moved substantially in the manner and for the purpose set fort ADOLPH F. AHRENS.
