1 Claim. (01. 24-73) This invention relates to garment closure devices for fastening or closing the companion flaps of a garment upon each other.

More specifically, even though without being limited thereto, this invention relates to closure devices for shirt cuffs, and further particularized to snap button fastening means or connectors for such cuffs, which comprise a male and a female snap button portion, each portion being emplaced upon a respective flap so that the flaps can be rapidly snapped together or unsnapped from each other.

As compared with the conventional removable cuff links, which must be laboriously inserted through button holes in the cuff, it is an advantage of the snap closing means which are permanently emplaced on the cuff that the shirt can be sent to the laundry without necessitating first the removal from and then the re-insertion of the closure devices in the cuff, that the closure devices proper cannot be mislaid or lost, that they allow for rapidly and conveniently opening and Closi the cuff, and that no part of them need be laboriously removed from or inserted through a button hole in the cuff, as is the case with cuff links.

Yet the removable cuff links, although laborious to manipulate, constitute traditionally a decorative item in mens apparel in that they off a wide variety of individualistic button or head designs not found or realizable in snap button cuff closures. Moreover such snap button closures, they are of the permanently emplaced type,"ar'e exposed and subject to the wear and tear of the laundering process and must be sufficiently rugged, plain, compact and non-protruding or flat to withstand the laundering treatment as Well as the ironing of the cuff without being harmed. Indeed, regular cuff links left in shirts sent to the laundry are likely to be lost or damaged during the laundering process, or they present an obstacle when the cuff is being ironed.

It is one object of this invention to provide cuff closure means to remain with the cuff undamaged through the laundering process, which offer no obstacle to the ironing of the cuff, and to combine the convenience of snap button 010- sure means with the decorative attractiveness of cuff link head designs, in such a manner that such fancy head, while simulating cuff links in design appearance, are nevertheless protected against being damaged or lost in the laundering; another object is to provide permanently emplaced snap button cuff closure means of fancy and decorative individualistic appearance which will present no obstacle to or interfere with the ironing or manipulation of the cuff. 1

These objects are attained by means of a snap button connector having permanently emplaced male and female portions, and by forming one. of these portions at the outside thereof with a snap button socket having removably snap fastened therein as a base a separabledecorativehead of any desiredindividualistic.design. This head is removed by unsnapping it from its base, prior to laundering.

It is among the advantages of this invention, that it saves the use of complete. cuff links .While the convenience of snap button fasteners is at.- tained. I Summarizing, this invention broadly stated. is represented by a closure devicetfor shirt cuffs, which comprises in combination a male and fe' male snap fastening connection for the cuff with the male and female portions permanently em placed in respective flaps of the cuff. A decorative cuff link-simulating head is removably vprovided upon the outside of the connection. I Figure 2 is a, view similar to that of Figure 1 although with the head removed or unsnapped so as to expose the snap connection for the flaps of the cuff.

Figures 7, 8, 9, 10 are views taken on lines 1-1, 8-8, 9-9, and Ill|0 respectively of the parts shown in Figure 6.

A barrel cuff, simulating the French style cuff, is shown in Figure 1 to represent the cuff linksimulating appearance of the cuff closure device according to this invention, There appears upon a closed cuff 10 having flaps II and I2 outwardly only a head l3 of what appears to be a cuff link, but actually is a snap fastening connection indicated at M in Figure 2 with the head removed, and further indicated in Figure 3 showing the flaps open due to the opening of the snap fastening connection.

The greatly enlarged cross-sectional view of Figure 4 shows a snap fastening connection M for the flaps H and I2 of the cuff, which connection comprises a female component element l5 emplaced in flap l2 and a male companion element I6 emplaced in flap ll. Provided upon the outside of the male element It and detachable therefrom is a decorative head l3.

The female element [5 comprises a socketed inner annular section [8 and a pronged outer annular section I9 interlocked by piercing the flap [2 with the socketed section 18. The section [8 is formed centrally With a socket and peripherally with a crimped or hollow annular portion 2! constituting a recess or recesses for interlocking with the companion section I5, and furthermore formed with an intermediate somewhat conical body portion 22,

The pronged section 19 is formed peripherally with a flange portion 23 provided at its inner edge with a plurality of prongs P, for example, five, extending through the flap l2 into the annular hollow portion 2| so that the sections [8 and I9 become tightly interlocked with each other. a

The male element [6 comprises a socketed outer annular section 24 having a socket 24 and being identical to socketed section I8 of the female element I5, and further comprises a pronged inner section 25 interlocked by piercing flap H with the socketed section 24. The pronged section 25 has prongs P similar to prongs P of section I! in the female element [5, but in distinction has a larger flange or body portion 26 formed with a crimped peripheral edge portion 21 for holding a plug member 28. That is to say, the plug member 28 comprises a disc-shaped body portion 29 having the edge portion 21 marginally swedged around it, and a plug portion 30 removably held in socket 20 of section l8.

The head [3 comprises a body portion 3| bearing exteriorly at 32 a fancy design or being of fancy shape, and fixedly connected therewith a plug member 33 similar in shape to plug member 30, and removably held in socket 24 Each of the sockets 20 and 24 is slotted crosswise to constitute quadrants, as exemplified in Figure 8 showing quadrants q q q q of the socket.

The simulated French cuff in Figure 4 is shown to comprise an inner and an outer layer of fabric or shirt material 34 or 35, respectively, a lining 36, and a stiffener 31 of plastic sheet material 4 both interposed between the layers 34 and 35 of shirt material.

While the closure means according to this invention have been described herein as applied to the cuff of mens shirts, it is to be understood that the invention is not to be so limited, but may be embodied as well in womens or children's garments, and even further the invention need not be limited to the cuff part thereof but is applicable wherever a decorative button effect is desired in conjunction with snap fastening closure means for any part of the garment.

What I claim is:

A garment closure device in which the respective flaps of the garment have uninterrupted surfaces comprising a snap fastening connection one side of each flap and a ring member dis posed on the other side of each flap, the ring member having integral prongs thereon extending through the uninterrupted surface of each iiap into interlocking relationship with the marginal recesses of each socketed section, one of the ring members having a flanged extension on the side of one flap opposite to its socketed section, a male fastening element held by the flanged extension and engageable with one of the socketed sections to close the flaps, and an interchangeable decorative head provided with a connector member in the form of a male snap fastening element on one of its surfaces for removable connection with the other of the socketed sections, whereby the fastening ele ments are emplaced in the respective flaps with no visual openings in the uninterrupted surfaces of the flaps and with the fabric of the flaps held between the socketed sections and the ring members.
