Description

SNAP ON FASTENERS AND A FASTENER ASSEMBLY FOR ARTICLES OF CLOTHING
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to snap on fasteners and a fastener assembly for articles of clothing.
The invention has been primarily developed for use in fastening opposing front panels of a shirt, in a manner similar to traditional buttons, and will be described hereinafter with reference to this application. However, the invention is not limited to this particular use and is also applicable for use in other types of clothing and garments, including jeans, jackets, skirts and other outer wearing clothing.
Background of the Invention
Shirts and other garments which use buttons and corresponding button holes to releasably connect adjacent panels are known. A disadvantage with known buttons is that it is difficult and time consuming to change the buttons in order to alter their appearance, and also the appearance of the shirt to which they are attached, as it requires removal of the existing buttons and resewing of a replacement set of buttons.

Detailed Description of the Preferred Embodiment
Figure 1 shows an article of clothing or garment, in the form of a shirt 10. The front of the shirt 10 has first and second portions, in the form of front panels 12a and 12b.
The panel 12a has a series of first fastener members 14 attached thereto, by riveting or other attaching mechanism. The panel 12b has a correspondingly positioned series of second fastener members 16 similarly attached thereto.
As shown in Figure 2, the first fastener member 14 is in the form of a press stud or other type of snap on fastener or snap engaging fastener. The first fastener member 14 includes a female or recessed engaging formation, in the form of a substantially cylindrical recess 18. As shown in Figures 3 and 4, the second fastener member 16 is also in the form of a press stud or other type of snap on fastener or snap engaging fastener. The second fastener member 16 includes two male or protruding engaging formations positioned on either side thereof, in the form of substantially cylindrical protuberances 20a and 20b.
Figures 5 and 6 show a decorative member 22 also in the form of a press stud or other type of snap on fastener or snap engaging fastener. The decorative member 22 includes a female or recessed engaging formation, in the form of a substantially cylindrical recess 24.
The members 14 are attached to the shirt panel 12a with the recess 18 facing outwardly therefrom. The members 16 are attached to the shirt panel 12b with the protuberances 20a and 20b facing inwardly and outwardly respectively therefrom.
The members 14, 16 and 22 can be made from steel, stainless steel, copper or plastics.
Figure 7 shows an outer part (i.e. having the male protuberance 20b) of the second fastener member 16 prior to attachment to a shirt 10. The outer part includes teeth 26 which pierce the fabric of the shirt 10 and then engage a retaining ring on a similar inner part (i.e. having the male protuberance 20a) in order to fix the second fastener member 16 to the shirt fabric. The first fastener member 14 is fixed to the shirt fabric in a similar manner.
Figures 8a and 8b show the first and second fastener members 14, 16 after attachment to the shirt 10.
Figure 9a shows cross-sectionally the first and second fastener members 14, 16 after their respective attachment to a portion of a shirt, as well as the decorative member 22, but prior to their interengagement to form a fastener assembly.
In use, a user places the shirt 10 on their person in the normal manner and fastens the front panels 12a and 12b together by snap engaging the female recesses 18 with the corresponding male protuberances 20a in respective aligned pairs of the first and second fastener members 14 and 16.
The user then selects decorative members 22 of an appropriate appearance and style and attaches them to the shirt 10 by engaging the male protuberance 20b with the female recess 24. Advantageously, the user can select from any number of different styles of decorative members 22. Further, if a user desires to change the appearance of the shirt 10, then the decorative members 22 can be easily and quickly released from engagement with the members 16 and replaced with alternative members 22 of an alternative style. Additionally, the user can apply all matching decorative members to the shirt, or more than one style of decorative members.
A range of snap on fasteners can be used as components of fastener assemblies for articles of clothing.
As shown in Figure 10, a first fastener member may be formed from a modified washer component 30 (in which a stud has been removed) and a socket component 32. These are joined together through the fabric of an inside panel 34 of a clothing article to present a generally flat surface on the inner side of the inside panel and a socket on the outer side of the inside panel.
As shown in Figure 11, a second fastener member may be formed from a combined stud and washer component 36 and a socket component 38. These are joined together through the fabric of an outside panel 40 of the clothing article, with the stud of the component 36 being inwardly facing.
The socket component 32 of the first fastener member fixed to the inside panel can now be snap engaged to the inwardly facing stud of the component 36 of the second fastener member fixed to the outside panel so as to interconnect the panels of the clothing article. The outside panel presents an outwardly facing socket.
The outwardly facing socket can now receive a decorative member, such as a round, tetragonal or triangular button component with an underlying stud component. The stud component of the decorative member can be received by the outwardly facing socket.
In an alternative assembly, the components may be so arranged to present an outwardly facing stud on the outside panel, the stud being able to receive a decorative member with an underlying socket component.
As shown in Figure 12, a second fastener member may be formed from a stud with underlying teeth component 42 and a socket component 44, these being fixed together through the fabric of a panel 46 of the clothing article. As shown in Figure 13, a second fastener member may also be formed from a stud with underlying teeth component 48 and a stud component 50, these being fixed together through the fabric of a panel 52 of the clothing article.
A decorative member may have a variety of underlying snap on components. As shown in Figure 14, the decorative member has a button component 54 with a recess 56 formed at its underside to receive a socket 58 by a forced press fit. As shown in Figure 15, the decorative member has the same button component 54 but its recess 56 receives a stud 60 by a forced press fit. Other arrangements of snap on components for forming a decorative member may also be adopted.
Decorative members of the above kind may also be connected (a) to neck ties to form snap on neck ties 62 with decorative snap on "buttons" connected to studs 64 running down their length (see Figure 16), (b) to bow ties to form snap on bow ties 66 with decorative snap on "buttons" connected to studs 68 on each wing (see Figure 17), (c) to cufflinks to form snap on cuff links 70 with a stud 72 (see Figure 18), and (d) to many other kinds of clothing accessories with the use of studs or sockets as mentioned above.
Although the invention has been described with reference to a preferred embodiment, it will be appreciated by those persons skilled in the art that the invention may be embodied in many other forms. The invention can also be used to create a decorative appearance on skirts, jeans, jackets and most other types of outer clothing. This can be achieved by adding a series of first fastener members (e.g. up and down a sleeve or leg of pants, such as jeans, and across a skirt, shirt or blouse) and then engaging decorative members therewith.
