Claims. ((1135-4) This invention relates to what are commonly referred to as tents or any other two similar parts to be coupled together. More particularly, the invention relates to the application of separable slide fastener stringers or chains to the separate parts to be coupled together in such manner that' each of the views, and in which:
cording to my invention diagrammatically illustrating the same in a set-up condition.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the two similar parts employed for constructing the tent shown in Fig. l withsaid parts shown in detached but alined' relationship.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of the parts as seen in Fig. 1 of the drawings showing only a part of the construction and with part of the construction broken awayand in section;-
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the from the standpointof the time devoted to assembllng the tent halves, particularly in coupling said halves, and moreover, the difllculty of handling the buttons, especially with gloved hands.
-which certain embodiments of the invention are disclosed and in which the separate parts are designated by suitable reference characters in It is the object of our invention to eliminate the difliculties and objectionable features of articles of the type and kind under consideration by arranging on each of the similar parts, what might be termed the box part and the pin part of a complete separable fastener so that when the two articles or tent parts are brought together,
the box stringer or chain of one part may be coupled with the pin stringer or chain of the opposed part, thus providing in the resulting assembled parts, two complete and independent de-,
tachably coupled separable fasteners. It will also appear that by arranging the box and'pin portions of the fastener centrally of the parts, in
central top portion of the tent showing the seal ing flaps employed inan extended position and illustrating a slight modification.
Fig. 5 is an inside face view of tentparts detached showing a modified adaptation of the invention.
- Fig. 6 is an enlarged. perspectiv. 1 view of the central portion of one of the tent parts, illustratingthe arrangement of the-stringers thereon with part, of the construction broken away.
Fig. '7 is an enlarged crosssectional view on the line 1-1 of Fig. 5 showing the tent parts coupled together.
Fig. 8 is an elevational view of the slider member.
In the construction of what are known as army or military tents, ita'has been a common practice to construct such tents of two similar halves, each half to be carried by a soldier as part of his equipment. Thes tents have employed buttons and similar types of fasteners in such manner that any two soldiers can attach the tent halves forming part of their equipment in constructing of the two halves, a complete shelter tent for both soldiers, The manner of constructing such tent halves has been expensive and the handling other words'centrally of the top portion of the resulting tent, the sliders may] be operated to control the opening and'closure of flaps at the endportions of the tent incontrolling passage into and outof the tent through either one or both ends thereof.
a At this time it will also be apparent that while for illustrative purposes we have disclosed the invention as applied to tent structures, that the same may be used for coupling or uniting any two similar parts in forming of the assembled parts a resulting article of predetermined contour.
In Figs. 1 to3 inclusive is shown one adaptation of the invention in the construction of what is commonly referred to as a shelter tent. The
"tent is composed of two similar parts Ill and II', and in that each part is of identical construction,
the brief description of one would apply to the other.
The parts. "land ll each comprise a rectangular portion l2 havingat one end a triangular extension H! which forms at opposed ends of a resulting tent to be erected therefrom, closure. flaps, as will clearly appear upon a consideration Arranged alongthe of Fig. 1 of the drawings. other end of the parts 10 and II is what will be termed for descriptive purposes, the pin stringer or chain ll of a separable fastener. This stringer or chain extends onto and along the upper edge lb of said parts and terminates adjacent the central portion of said upper edge in the coupling pin l6. Arranged along one side edge of the flap A 13 is what is termed the box stringer or chain l'l upper edge I5 and terminates adjacent the centhereof extremely difficult and objectionable of a separable fastener which extends onto the tral portion of said edge in a box coupling part I8, the latter being arranged in spaced relation to the pin part It. Arranged on and slidable longitudinally of the stringer or chain I1 is a slider l9 having on upper and lower walls thereof elongated loops 20 for receiving inner and outer finger pieces or pulls 2|, note Fig. 8 of the drawings. This particular slider construction adapts the slider for operation externally and internally of the resulting tent, as will be apparent. At the outer end of the stringer or chain I1 is an end stop 22 which limits the closure movement of the slider in fully closing the flaps I3, and a similar stop 23 is provided on the stringer or chain H.
The type of slide fasteners employed on the tent are what are commonly known in the art as separable fasteners, such as employed on lumberjackets and other articles. The pin part l6 enters the box part l8 through the sliders I9 when the latter are adjacent the box parts as seen in Figs. 2 and 3, and when the pin parts are so coupled with their opposed box parts, the sliders l9 are moved along the stringers l4, IT, to couple the links thereof. In so doing, the two tent parts l and l l are united to form the shelter tent of the general arrangement illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The corner portions of the rectangular |part ii are provided with eyelets or other forms of fasteners 24 by means of which stay-cords or the like may be coupled with the tent poles -25 and with the tent stakes 26 in the manner clearly illustrated in Fig. l of the drawings.
As previously stated, the pin parts l6 and box parts iii are spaced from each other as indicated at 21 to provide freely flexing portions which facilitate the coupling of each of the pins I 6 with the box parts l8 of the opposed tent portions. These spaced portions'of the tent parts as well as the pin and box portions thereof are covered and concealed by closure straps or flaps 28 having at their fre end portions double ib'llttOIlS .29 exposed to inner and outer surfaces of the flaps and adapted to be passed through buttonholes 30 adjacent the mounted end portions of the flaps. When these flaps are united it will be understood that one flap will be arranged above the other and the upper fiap will have the inner button 29 passed through the aperture 30 of the inner flap, whereas the outer button of the inner flap will pass outwardly through the buttonhole 30 of the upper flap.
In Fig; 4 of the drawings a slight modification part 4| whereas the stringer or chain 42 is equivof the closure or concealing flap structure is employed, and in this figure, 3| represents the flaps, each of which is provided near the free ends thereof with .buttonholes 32 and near the mounting ends thereof with other buttonholes 33. Arranged on the opposed tent parts are buttons 34 which are adapted to. be passed through the buttonholes 33. In coupling the flaps, one flap will be arranged inwardly and the other outwardly, and the inner flap will be first coupled with its button 34 by passing the same through the buttonhole 33, after which the buttonhole 32 of this fiap is coupled with the button 34 of the opposed part. Thereafter the outer flap is arranged in position by coupling the buttonhole 32 thereof with the first mentioned button 34.
In Figs. 5, 6 and 7, a slight modification is shown in the arrangement of the stringers or chains on the similar tent parts, and in slightly modifying the structure or contour of the parts as compared with the showing in Figs. 1 to 3 inclusive so as to dispose the stringers on the tent parts at a point offset primarily with respect to the upper folded edge of said tent parts.
alent to the stringer or chain l1 and terminates at its end in the box part 43. The other details of the tent parts need no further detailed de scription, as the same type of sliders and pulls are employed, and straps, parts of which are shown at 44 will also be employed to cover and conceal the central top portion of the tent. The primary difference in the structure shown in Figs.
5, 6 and 7, lies in the fact that the extended flap portions 31 will lie over and cover as well as conceal the fasteners at one side of the tent; thatis to say, the closures will be at one side of the top of the tent near one end thereof and at the opposed side at the other end thereof.
While separable fasteners can be provided to form substantially a seal or closure therebetween, a structure such as shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 will provide a greater assurance for seal while at the same time protecting the fastener links or the stringers as a whole against the action of the elements when exposed for any great length of time. It will of course be apparent that the pin and box parts 4!, 43 are spaced apart as seen at 45 to facilitate the coupling of these parts as with the construction shown in the other figures. By reason of the fact that each tent part is identical in construction, particularly insofar as the arrangement of the interengaging fastener stringers are concerned, any two of these parts may be coupled together. In using the tent structure for military purposes, it will readily appear that any two soldiers may unite their individual tent parts in erecting a complete shelter tent of the general type and kind illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
As previously stated, the invention is by no means limited to the construction of any particular type and kind of tent. In fact two similar or substantially similar parts of any type or kind may be Joined by two or more complete separable fasteners having separable end couplings thereof in adjacent relation. The adjacent end portions of the two fasteners are flexibly or movably coupled in such manner as to facilitate attachment and detachment of the stringers of both fasteners to provide for complete separation of the parts into independent units.
Having fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patprising, separable fastener stringers arranged on each part for coupling said parts together, means uniting the stringers of two parts to form a closure slide fastener thereof, the separate stringers of which are coupled and uncoupled by a slider mowable longitudinallyof the stringers in uniting and detaching said parts, the arrangement of stringers on said like partabeing identical so that any two of the like parts are interchangeably attachable and detachable. 3.
