CONVERTIBLE JACKET Filed Jan. 12, 1942 INVENTOR Q0622? L,ee
ATTORNEY Patented June 1, 1943 UNHTED STATE 2,320,783 CONVERTIBLE JACKET Robert E. Lee, Toledo, Ohio, assignor to The Hettrick Manufacturing Company, a corporation of Ohio Application January 12, 1942, Serial No. 426,429
3 Claims.
This invention relates to jackets but more particularly to hunting jackets and an object is to produce a hunting jacket with a detachable skirt portion having a game pocket, the weight of which is taken by the body of the coat.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and for purposes of illustration but not of limitation, an embodiment of the invention is shown on the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is a rear perspective view of the jacket with a skirt portion attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a front view of the jacket and skirt portion with the skirt portion detached from the jacket;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary View showing the manner in which the game pocket flap is detachably connected to the body of the jacket; and
Figure 4 is a sectional view on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
The illustrated embodiment of the invention comprises a jacket I having sleeves II and zipper fastening means I2 for the front vertical edges of the body portion. Attached to the lower portion of the body II! by a sewn seam I3 is a strip I4 which overlaps the lower edge of the body portion I0 and extends a slight distance below such edge portion. The ends of the strip I l are adapted to overlap each other and are held together by buttons I5.
Sewed to the lower portion of the body I!) and extending entirely around the same is a strip I6 having well-known interlocking detachable fasteners I'l, sometimes referred to as zippers. The strip I6 is concealed by the flap or strip I4 and the strip I4 as indicated in Figure 4 extends downwardly a substantial distance beyond the fastener elements. I1.
A skirt portion I8 is adapted to be detachably connected to the jacket body I I] and for this purpose has a strip I9 sewed to its upper edge portion and the strip I9 carries interlocking fastening elements 20 which are adapted to interlock with the elements I? on the strip I6. As shown, the skirt I8 extends completely around the lower edge of the jacket body I0 and when connected thereto resembles an integral portion of the jacket. The detachable connecting elements are completely concealed by the overlapping strip or flap I4.
The skirt I8 is equipped with pockets 2i in the front portion and with a game pocket 22 in the rear portion. The game pocket 22 is connected to the skirt body by a horizontal seam 23 at the lower portion thereof and by vertical side seams 24. The upper edge portion of the pocket 22 inclines upwardly and inwardly as indicated at 25 and terminates at the top in a horizontally disposed attaching portion 26 to which is sewed a loop 21. The loop 21 carries a metal hook fastener 28 which engages the cooperating fastening element 29 which is carried by a loop 30 sewed to the seam connecting the strip I4 to the jacket body I0. It will be apparent that the detachable fastening elements 28 and 29 are wholly concealed by the strip I 4 as indicated particularly on Figure 4.
The inclined edge portions 25 of the game pocket flap provide two openings affording access to the interior of the pocket. Such openings are normally covered by flaps 3| which are sewed to the back of the skirt portion. One important feature of this construction is that the weight of game and the like carried by the game pocket 22 is not transmitted to the skirt portion but rather to the body portion II! of the jacket to which the fastener element 29 is secured. This relieves any appreciable strain being imposed upon the detachable interlocking fastening elements I! and 20.
It is to be understood that numerous changes in details of construction, arrangement and operation may be effected without departing from the spirit of the invention especially as defined in the appended claims.
What I claim is: I
1. A hunting jacket comprising a hip length garment, a strip extending around and overlapping the lower edge of the garment, a detachable skirt portion adapted to be connected to such lower edge, cooperable fasteners on the top edge of said skirt and lower edge of said garment respectively, a game pocket in said skirt portion provided with an upwardly extending flap, and detachable fasteners on the upper edge of said flap and the lower edge portion of said garment respectively whereby the weight carried by the game pocket is transmitted to the garment in stead of said skirt portion, said last fasteners being concealed by said overlapping strip.
2. A hunting jacket comprising a hip length garment, a strip extending around and overlapping the lower edge of the garment, a detachable skirt portion adapted to be connected to such lower edge, cooperable fasteners on the top edge of said skirt and lower edge of said garment respectively, a game pocket in said skirt portion provided with an upwardly extending flap, and detachable fasteners on the upper edge of said 2 flap and the lower edge portion of said garment respectively whereby the weight carried by the game pocket is transmitted to the garment instead of said skirt portion, all of said fasteners being disposed beneath and concealed by said overlapping strip.
3. A hunting jacket comprising a hip length garment, a strip extending around and overlapping the lower ed'ge "of the garment, adetach'able skirt portion adapted to be connected to such lower edge, cooperable fasteners on the top edge of said skirt and lower edge of said garment respectively, a game pocket in said skirt portion, said pocket being in the back of said skirt portion and joined thereto along the bottom and vertical sides, an upwardly extending flap portion on said pocket with the upper edges inclining upwardly and inwardly from the vertical sides and terminating in a centrally disposed attaching portion, and cooperable fasteners on said attaching portion and garment respectively, said cooperable fasteners being concealed by said overlapping strip.
