Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WADDELL, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
TOILET-SCREW.
dated September 5, 1882.
Application filed November 14, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN WADDELL, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, have invented an Improvement in Toilet-Screws, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in what is known to the furniture trade as toiletscrews 3 and it consists in a novel device for attaching a wooden head or-knob to a metallic screw-shank, as hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 is a front view. Fig.2 is avertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a lower end view of Fig. l at C. Fig. 4 is a top view of part B,
Fig. 2.
Like letters in the several figures refer to like parts.
A, Figs. 1 and 2, represents a metallic screwshank with curved end 1). B is a wooden dowel, and G is a wooden head or knob. The screw-shank A is first inserted through the center of the dowel B until its curved end D rests in slot E in top of said dowel B, after which said dowel- B is inserted and secured within the knob O by glue or other means, to prevent it from turning in or separating from the head or knob G.
I use this device in furniture and house trimmings principally; but it may be used for other purposes, and I vary the style or shape of the head or knob G as occasion may require.
The shank A may be round or angular, and its end in dowel B may be flattened, enlarged, divided, or shaped in any manner to prevent it from turning in or dropping through said dowel B. I have shown a wood-screw thread l r 4.....1- A hnl- T qlan use.
It will be understood I do not limit myself to this precise construction, as it is obvious that I may insert the screw-shank directly through a slot formed in the head-piece or knob, said knob having a recess in. its upper portion against which the bent end of said screw-shank will bear when forced into its proper position. To complete the knob I insert in its recessed portion a cap-piece having in its lower face a recess which corresponds with and fits over and around the bent end of the screwshank. When the cap-piece is properly in this position it will prevent any turning of the screw-shank in the knob. The cap-piece corresponds in size, form, and style of ornamentation with the knob.
My device can be applied, detachably or otherwise, to either metal or wood screws, as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a toiletscrew, the combination of the dowel B, screw-shank A, having its end D bent at aright angle and adapted to fit in a recess formed in said dowel, and the ornamental knob 0, adapted to fit over and inclose said dowel B in such manner as to prevent the screw-shank from turning independent of the dowel and knob, substantially as shown and described.
JOHN WADDELL.
