Description

O. T. BBEBE. Scythe Fastening.
Patented April2 ,1878.
N PETERS. PHOTO-L THOGRAFHER WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CALVIN T. BEEBE, OF JACKSON, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO WITHINGTON &
COOLEY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT l-N SCYTHE FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 201,905, dated April 2, 1878; application filed January 23, 1877.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CALVIN T. BEEBE, of the city of Jackson, in the county of Jackson and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Scythe-Fastenings, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to furnish a fastening for a scythe-snath that will hold the scythe more firmly, be stronger, confine the wood of the snath to which it is attached more permanently, and add to the general appearance of the fitting;
The invention or improvement is shown in drawings by Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4, Fig. 1 being in perspective Fig. 2, a vertical or end view; Fig. 3, a horizontal view, and Fig. 4 a sectional view 011 line A B in Fig. 3.
The old style of fastening is shown by Figs. 5, 6, and 7, Fig. 5 being a sectional view; Fig. 6, the same with the shank of scythe and loop holding same shown, and Fig. 7 an end view of fitting.
In attaching the scythe-shank to the fastening, the loop L, as shown in Fig. 6, surrounds the shank S, and by means of the nutN draws it firmly against the lower side of the plate P, and there holds it fast. The plate 1?, with the slot 0 extending very nearly across'it, has but the narrow bar b on the outer end of plate, backed by the wood of snath-stick, to stand against the strain of the screw, drawing scytheshank against-it. This has proved to be a weak point, so little of the wood being left, after boring and milling for the loop, that it is easily crushed and the narrow bar b bent, thus becoming a very indifferent fastening.
My improvement upon the fastening thus described consists inplacing a bar across the end of the fastening, as shown at Hin Figs. 1,2, 3, and 4, thus making with the narrow bar 12 a very strong angle or L shaped bar. (Most clearly shown in section, Fig. 4.)
The bar H also holds the wood which is left outside of slot firmly in its place, and in every way adds very much to the permanency of the fitting.
The general form of fastening, with the exception of the bar H, is the same as has been used for years. I therefore make no claim on the general form of fastening; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The scythe-fastening provided at its outer or ferrule end with a' bar, covering said end wholly or in part, and uniting with the bar I), to form an L-shaped support, which receives and confines the end of the snath-stick, and resists the crushing action thereon of the scythe-clamping device, as set forth.
CALVIN T. BEEBE.
