(No Model.)
P. BARTOW.
ORNAMENTAL- SCREW HEAD.
No. 309,817. Patented Deo. 30, 1884.
WITNESSES; INVENTEIR.
y a l I NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PIERREPONI BARTOYV, OF UTIOA, NEW YORK.
ORNAMENTAL SCREW-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 309,817, dated December 30, 1884.
Application filed February 9, 1884. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PIERREPONI BARTOW, of the city of Utica, Oneida county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Screw-Heads or Nails; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures marked thereon.
My invention relates to a novel and simple method of attaching an ornamental head to screws, nails, or bolt-s used in manufacturing articles of furniture, caskets, or other manufactured articles where an, ornamental screwhead or nail is desired; and it consists in providing the head of an ordinary screw or nail with an aperture in the center of the head. This orifice is filled with wood or any other suitable substance. An ornamental head provided with a stem or nail is then driven into the orifice in the head of the nail or screw, thereby providing an ornamental head or covering of any desired pattern.
Having described the general nature and construction of my invention, I will now proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
Figure 1 represents an elevation of an ordinary screw with a top section removed, showing an aperture in the head of the same. Fig. 2 represents a top view of the same. Fig. 3 3 represents a nail or spike with a section of the head removed, showing an aperture in the head of the same. Fig. 4 represents atop view of the same. Fig. 5 represents asection of an ordinaryscrew providedwithan aperture in the head with an artificial screw-head in place.
Fig. 6 represents a top view of an artificial screw-head. Fig. 7 represents a screw or nail with a section of the head cut away, showing an orifice in the center of the head. Fig. 8 represents a top view of the same. Fig. 9 represents a section of the screw with a smooth bore in the head with my artificial head. Fig. 10 represents a side elevation of my improved head with a stem.
A represents an ordinary screw.
B represents an'aperture in the head of the same, provided with screw-threads.
0 represents a nail or spike provided in the head with an aperture.
D represents the screw-threads cut in the same.
E represents my improved head.
6 represents the stem.
H. represents a spike or nail with an aperture in the head of the same.
It represents the aperture. K represents my improved artificial head with a nail or stem attached to the head.
K represents the stem to thesame, adapted to fit into the aperture in the top of the screw,
spike, or nail, which may be filled with wood or any substance, and the head, provided with a tack, nail, or projecting spike, may then be driven or screwed into the wood or other substance contained in the aperture.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A nail or screw having an areal orifice in its head, in which is placed a plug of wood jointly with an ornamental cap or head, the stem of which is secured in said plug to retain the cap in place upon the nail or screw, substan tially as described.
PIER-REPONT BARTOXV.
