Claims. 1

This invention relates to improvements in lipstick containers and refers particularly to a lipstick container having a removable cover and a normally confined lipstick which by the removal of the cover is moved from its normally confined position into a position available for use.

Lipstick containers have heretofore been proposed which comprise a lipstick receptacle and a telescopically fitting cover, the receptacle being provided with a spiral ejecting mechanism which, after the cover has been removed, may be manipulated to expose the lipstick for use. Lipstick containers of this type comprise a plurality of coaxially fitting sleeves one of which is provided with an axial straight slot and the other comprising a spiral slot together with an outer tubular receptacle. The manufacture and assembly of all of these parts is both expensive and time-consuming. In addition, the use of the device involves a number of manipulations by the operator to project and retract the lipstick after the cover is removed.

In my present invention, a lipstick container is contemplated wherein the removal of the cover per se exposes a normally confined lipstick and renders it available for use, and application of the cover to closure position simultaneously moves the lipstick to: its normally confined position. In this fashion excessive manipulations by the operator are avoided.

In addition, the construction of the container comprising the present invention involves a minimum number of parts, the manufacture and assembly thereof being extremely simple and inexpensive.

Other objects and advantages of my invention will be apparent from the accompanying drawing and following detailed description.

In the drawing, Fig. 1 is a front elevational view of the lipstick container constructed in accordance with my inventive concepts.

Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. l.

Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 4 is an exploded view illustrating the lip stick in position available for use after the cover has been removed.

1 Referring in detail to the drawing, the lipstick container comprises an inner tubular member I and an outer tubular cover 2, the latter being adapted to fit telescopically over the former. The

inner tubular member I is open at both ends and at one end thereof said tubular member is of increased diameter as at 3 in Fig. 2 providing an annular shoulder 4. A closure cap 5 is adapted to frictionally fit over the enlarged portion 3 of the inner tubular member, said cap frictionally engaging the enlarged tubular portion of the inner member.

The inner tubular member is provided with a slot 6 which extends throughout a major portion of its length substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the inner tubular member I. The upper portion of said slot is curved as shown best at 1 in Fig. 4. The lower portion of slot 6 extends through a portion of the enlarged end 3 of the inner tubular member I as shown best at 8 in Fig. 2.

A lipstick containing cup 9 is adapted to be slidably positioned within the inner tubular member I, said cup carrying a lipstick II]. A pin II projects outwardly from the outer wall of the cup 9 and is provided with a head ID. The head III is substantially rectangular in shape, the smaller dimension of the rectangular head being substantially equal to the diameter of the pin II. To insert the lipstick into the container the cap 5 is removed and the cup 9 is moved into the interior of the inner tubular member I. By virtue of the enlarged portion 3 of the inner tubular member I being provided with the end 8 of slot 6 the pin II can move upwardly through said slot into the main portion of the inner tubular member I. When the cup 9 is so positioned within the inner tubular member the head I'Z of the pin II lies outside of the outer wall of the inner tubular member I, the pin being positioned in the slot 6.

The cover member 2 is provided with a closed end I3. The opposite end of the cover is open. The thickness of the wall of the cover 2 adjacent the open end of the cover is cut away throughout an area designated at I4 in Fig. 4 whereby the area presents a substantially fiat surface tangent to the curvature of the cover 2. A bayonet slot I5 is formed in the area I4, the slot opening toward the edge of the cover 2.

The normal position of the lipstick I0 when it is substantially wholly within the inner tubular member I is illustrated in Fig. 2. In this position the cup- 9 is disposed adjacent the enlarged portion 3 of the inner tubular member. When the cover 2 is in place the pin I I moves into one arm I6 of the bayonet slot I5 and by means of a slight rotation of the cover said pin can be made to move into arm I! of the bayonet slot. When it is desired to use the lipstick the cover 2 is moved telescopically in an axial direction away from the inner tubular member I. In view of the fact that the pin II is positioned in arm I! of the slot I5 the pin is caused to move through the straight portion of the slot 6. As the motion of the cover proceeds the pin ll engages the curved portion 1 of the slot 6 and as a consequence the pin is caused to move out of the arm ll of the slot. When the pin comes into alinement with the slot 16 the cover completely disengages itself from the pin and the lipstick H] is then in projected position available for use. When it is desired to recover the lipstick the cover 2 is moved into telescopic engagement with the inner tubular member I, arm I6 of slot I5 engaging pin ll. As the cover is moved axially along the inner tubular member 1 pin l I being guided by the curved portion 1 of slot 6 moves into arm I! of the bayonet slot 15. In this manner when the cover 2 moves into contact with shoulder 4 the pin H is positioned within arm ll of the slot [5 and said pin has moved to a position adjacent the end of the slot 6. Movement of the pin H by means of the cover causes cup 9 and lipstick ID to move into confined position within the inner tubular member I.

It can readily be seen that modifications .of my invention may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention and consequently I do not wish to be limited except as necessitated by the appended claims.

I claim as my invention:

1. A lipstick container comprising a tubular receptacle, a cup for holding lipstick slidably movable in said receptacle to move said lipstick to an extended position or a confined position with respect to said receptacle, a tubular cover telescopically engageable with said receptacle, a

projection upon a Wall of said cup, said receptacle being provided with a slot disposed parallel to the axis of said receptacle throughout a portion of its length and which is curved in a lateral direction at one end adjacent the open end of the receptacle, said projection being positioned in said slot, said cover being provided with a slot of substantially bayonet-form one arm of which is disposed parallel to the axis of said cover and opens to an end edge ofsaid cover and the other arm is transversely disposed and extends in a direction laterally opposite to the curved portion of the slot in the receptacle, said projection being removably engageable with the transverse arm of said bayonet slot whereby movement of said cover moves said projection in the receptacle slot to move a portion of said lipstick to extended position with respect to said receptacle, the curve in said receptacle slot guiding said projection out of engagement with the bayonet slot after the cover has moved axially a predetermined distance to permit removal of said cover from said receptacle.

A lipstick container comprising a tubular receptacle, a cup for holding lipstick slidably movable in said receptacle, a tubular cover telescopically engageable with saidreceptacle, a projection upon a wall of said cup, said receptacle being provided with a slot disposed parallel to the axis of said receptacle throughout a portion of its length and which is curved in a lateral direction at one end adjacent the open end of the receptacle, said projection being positioned in said slot, said cover being provided with a slot of substantially bayonet form having one arm disposedsubstantially parallel to the axis of the cover and the other arm at substantially right angles thereto said latter arm extending from the first mentioned arm in a lateral direction opposite to the lateral inclination of said curved slot, said first-mentioned arm opening to an end edge of said cover, said projection being removably engageable with said right-angled arm of the bayonet slot whereby movement of said cover moves said projection in the straight portion of the receptacle slot to move a portion of said lipstick out of said receptacle, the curve in said receptacle slot guiding said projection out of engagement with the right-angled arm of the bayonet slot after the cover has moved axially a predetermined distance to move said projection into the parallel arm of the bayonet slot and permit removal of said cover from said receptacle.

A lipstick container comprising an open ended tubular receptacle, said receptacle being of relatively enlarged diameter adjacent one end thereof, a cup for holding lipstick slidably movable axially in said receptacle, a tubular cover telescopically engageable with the relatively restricted portion of said receptacle, a projection upon a wall of said cup, said receptacle being provided with a slot which is laterally curved at the end portion adjacent the open end of the receptacle and in which said projection is positioned, said slot extending into the enlarged portion of said receptacle whereby said cup may be initially introduced to said receptacle, the cover being provided with a slot of substantially bayonet form with one arm substantially parallel to the axis of the cover and opening to an end edge of said cover and th other armbeing transverse and extending laterally in a direction opposite to the lateral inclination of the curved slot, said projection being removably engageable with said bayonet slot whereby axial movement of said cover on the receptacle moves said projection in the receptacle slot to move a portion of said lipstick out of said receptacle, the curve in said receptacle slot guiding said projection out of engagement with the bayonet slot alter the cover has moved a predetermined distance along the length of the receptacle to permit removal of said cover from said receptacle.

A lipstick container comprising a tubular receptacle having a lower portion and open upper portion, said receptacle being provided with an elongated slot which extends substantially parallel to the'longitudinal axis of the receptacle for a portion of its length and is curved laterally adjacent its upper end, a lipstick cup for holding a lipstick slidably positioned in said receptacle, means projecting from an outer wall of said cup engageable with said slot and guided by said slot during slidable movementof the cup'within the receptacle, a tubular cover having an open mouth telescopically engageable with said receptacle, the wall of said cover adjacent said open mouth being provided with a slot of substantially bayonet shape one arm of which opens to said mouth and the other arm of which extends laterally in a direction opposite to the lateral inclination of the curved portion of the slot in the receptacle, said projecting means being engageable in the lateral arm of said bayonet slot durmg axial movement of the cover and while said projecting means moves in that portion of the receptacle slot which is parallel to the axis of said receptacle and being disengaged from said bayonet slot during further axial movement of the cover and during movement of the project ing means in the curved portion of said receptacle slot.

5. A lipstick container comprising a tubular receptacle having an open end, a cup for holding lipstick slidably-movable in said receptacle, a

tubular cover telescopically engageable with said receptacle to close said open end, a projection upon a wall of said cup, said receptacle being provided with a slot substantially parallel to the axis of the receptacle for a major portion of its length in which said projection is slidably movable, said slot being curved at one end adjacent the open end of the receptacle, said cover being provided with a slot of substantially bayonet form having an axial portion and a transverse portion extending from said axial portion in a direction opposite to the direction of inclination of the curve in said receptacle, said projection being removably engageable with the transverse portion of the bayonet slot when the cover is in closure position upon the receptacle whereby axial movement of the cover moves said projection in the receptacle slot, moving a portion of said lipstick out of the receptacle, the curve in 6 said latter slot guiding said projection out of engagement with the transverse portion of the bayonet slot after the cover has moved axially a predetermined distance to permit removal of said cover from said receptacle.
