This invention relates to 'cxpellant containers for holding, projecting, retracting and applying bodies or sticks-of medicinal, hygienic, cosmetic, marking or other dispensible substances, all of which for convenience hereinare exemplified "by lipstick.
.Animportant object of the invention is to .reduce the thickness of .the complete wall structure, which houses and surrounds a lipstick with its carrier, to preferably a single-ply wall forming a simple shell entirely rid of any extra inner sleeve or sleeves surrounding the retracted lipstick and its carrier. Such extra sleeves heretoforehave been considered .a necessary part of mechanism capable of projecting and retracting the lipstick. Elimination of such extra sleeve enables ta :lipstick of optimum diameter to be housed within and .mechanically projected 'outward :from .a container of minimum overall diameter. Viewed conversely, a smaller overall size of housing is enabled to contain and pro-- .iect a lipstick of larger diameter than has heretofore been possible.
Another object is toconfine all'ef the mechanical core :parts, whichserve to motivate the lipstick carrier, to a location intermediate one end of the outer casing and the nearest end-of the carrier. 1
A further object is to make use of telescoping parts to transmit movement from a hand operated ferrule that is externally exposed for manipulation to a carrier for the lipstick that is slidable lengthwise inside of th casing.
:A further object is to shape such telescoping parts tot-have interen-gaged flat sides so that they may transmit turning movement to one another while sliding telescopically and without resorting to splines, keys, or the like so that said parts may consist of simple, smooth-walled, tubular members.
A further object is to construct an assembly of sucht'elescopic'pa-rt in a manner'to limit the extent of operative separation of the parts by means of 'interengaging "flanges at the terminal edges .oi'. mutua1ly overlapping tubular members.

The outer casing l-El, beioreassembly is a cylind-rical shell-open at both ends. .Its bottom'end is provided with an external annular bead -or circumferen-tialfiange H while its top end is chamvfered at E2 to receive the slip-on cover cap 43-. The opposite or bottom end of ferrule I6 is closed by an end wall l1 facing the central well i'i. Upstanding fixedly from end wall or cross wall I! centrally of well l1 there is a driving post Hi. In the form here shown, post I8 is square in cross section and hollow to save material, but may be of any preferably polyhedral shape. Ferrule I6 is larger in diameter than casing shell Ill so as to be grasped independently of such shell as shown in Fig. 1. v
It is believed to be new in these improvements that the plunger or cup-like carrier 25 for the stick 30 of cosmetic or other applicative substance lies directly next to and slidingly fits the helically grooved inner cylindrical surface of the wall of casing ill and is guided by direct contact therewith throughout the extent of its reciprocative travel lengthwise of the container. Fixed on this carrier is the usual projecting lug 26 which slidingly rides in and is guided by helical groove IS without passing through any sleeve intermediate the carrier and outer casing. v Grove l9 and lug 26 are illustrated as one of many varieties of screw thread and follower that might be employed constituting interengaging instrumentalities carried partly by the plunger 25 and partly by the shell Ill.
The mechanical parts which act to project and retract the lipstick carrier 2-5 are herein newly confined to a location between the bottom end of casing Ill and the nearest end of carrier 25. This eliminates what was formerly considered the necessity of interposing a rotatable driving sleeve for lug 26 between the carrier and the adjacent side wall of casing Hi and thus permits substan tial reduction in the overall girth or outside diameter of a casing that is capable of holding a lipstick of any given girth or diameter.
In the construction of the carrier actuating parts herein shown, rotation of ferrule I is transmitted to carrier 25 in both rotary directions through a telescoping mechanism which may or need not include the longitudinally slidable tele scopic tubular coupling 2! which is open at both ends and square in cross section. As shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 5, this coupling slidingly overlaps driving post [8 and is in turn slidingly overlapped by a hollow shank 23 which depends fixedly from the cylindrical body 29 of carrier 25 and which is square in cross section. The hollow in shank 28 may or need not open at its top end into the cup-like space in cylindrical carrier body 29 in which the lower end of lipstick 30 is seated on the annular internal carrier shoulder 3|. However, where lipstick 39 is thus exposed to the hollow in shank 28, the coupling tube 21 if made longer than herein shown may serve to push upwardly on the bottom end of the lipstick and thus act to eject or dislodge a short butt of unconsurned lipstick from its seat in carrier 25 when the parts assume their fully collapsed relationship indicated in Fig. 3.
The extent to which carrier 25 may be moved axially away from driving post i8 is limited jointly by the slide stopping engagement of outward turned lips 35 at the top end of post l8 with inward turned lips 36 at the bottom end of coupling tube 21, and by the slide stopping engagement of outward turned lips 3! at the top end of tubular coupling 2! withthe inward turned lips 38 at the bottom end of carrier shank 28. In view of the similarity of the carrier movement to that of a plunger, the carrier is sometimes so referred to herein.
More than one tubular coupling such as 21 having stop lip as 36, 31 may be interposed telescopically between driving post 18 and carrier shank 28, while Fig, 6 shows a modified construction wherein all tubular couplings such as 21 may be omitted and the lengthened shank 23' of the modified carrier 25' made directly to overlap telescopically the lengthened driving post 18 of the modified ferrule It. It will be understood that in Fig. 6 the modified carrier 25' is provided with the usual lug 26' riding in the helical groove IQ of the casing Ill. The casing can be made proper in length to accommodate the relationship of lengths of post l8 and shank 28 and as dictated by the length of lipstick it is desired to house within the container. Also Fig. fi illustrates that the driving post and carrier shank may be cylindrical instead of polyhedral, either the post or the shank being provided with a longitudinally extending slot or groove 33 slidingly engaged by a tongue-like extension 40. Such groove and tongue may be carried either by the post or by the shank respectively. A corresponding slot and tongue construction may be employed to prevent tubular coupling 21, if made cylindrical, from turning relative to either or both the post or shank.
In further possible modifications not shown in the drawings the stepped order of sizes of the telescopically related elements may be reversed, the ferrule post it or it having the largest cross sectional size and each telescopic part above it having a sufficiently smaller cross sectional size to collapse into positions inside of the post l8 and be overlapped thereby.
The above described parts may conveniently be assembled by preforming the lips 31 and 38 which will leave the lips 35 and 36 to be turned over after assemblage.
In operation my improved lipstick holder may be held in the hand of the user somewhat as shown in Fig. l with the bottom ferrule clutched between the palm of the hand and the second or third finger, while the thumb and index finger of the same hand is left free to swivel the casing shell it about its own axis relatively to ferrule l6. Thus the lipstick can be caused to move back and forth between its projected position in Fig. 2 and its retracted position in Fig. 3. Also with the container so manually held, the extent of projection of the lipstick beyond the open mouth of the casing shell can be maintained or varied while the lipstick is being applied. Other features of the operation will be clear from the foregoing description.
It will be evident to those skilled in the art that parts difiering in shape, size and arrangement from those herein shown can be arranged to operate on similar principles and yield the advantages arising from the particular construction herein illustrated to explain the invention and that the appended claims accordingly will be understood to comprehend and to be directed to all fair'equivalents for such construction as would be suggested by the disclosure hereof.
The reduction of the complete casing wall structure of a 1ipstick holder to a single integral thickness i particularly important in holders for lipstick molded from plastic materials because of the somewhat greater thickness of a tubular wall that is necessary where such mate'- rial is involved.

In a :handle-like applicative container for holding projecting and retracting a body of dispensible substance housed by saidcontainer, an elongated open-ended oasing'shell provided with an internal helical guide thread and having at its bottom :end an externa circumferential flange, a plunger adapted to carry said .body of substance slidablyfitting-the inside ofsaid shell and having guiding engagement with said thread thereby to occasion movement of said plunger length- Wise of said shell, a ferrule of larger diameter thanithe maximum girth of said shell exposed for inani-pulation-atv one end of said shell havin a central well and provided with an annular rim shaped to embrace said head loosely in a manner to :hold said :ferrule and casing together While permitting their relativemotation, and extensible coupling means within said casing shell connected to be turned by said ferrule in part occupying said well andextending to the nearest endofsaid plunger and constructed and arranged .to maintain said plungerconstantly i-n-fixed rotative relation to said ferrule throughout the formers movementlengthwiseiof said shell.

In :an applicative container adapted to serve as an elongated "hollow handle for holding and projecting and retracting axially of said container a contained "body of dispensible substance, an elongated open-ended :sh'ell including an encompassing wall having a smooth interior cylindrical surface bordering a space Within said container receptive to said body, a plungerhaving asmooth cylindrical periphery slidable axially within and filling said space and having a socket receptive "to one end of said body for clinging to and carrying the latter, mutually telescoping members "for propelling said plunger axially with respect to said shell located between said plunger seat and one-endof said shell, means operative'ly corelating said telescoping members in a manner positively to-restrict their relative rotation while permitting saidmembers to move axially relatively to each other, and interengaginginstrumentalities carried partly by said plunger-and partly by said shell including a screw thread and a follower therefor.
6. {Ahandle-like applicative container for'holding projecting and retracting a stiff stick of solid dispensible substance, embodying in combination, an elongated casingrshell having a full open end adapted freely to admit said stick and having :a --Wall with a helical channel sunk therein, said Wall-presenting asrnooth interior cylindrical surface defining the girth of the space 'ior said stick within :said container, a cup-shaped plunger slidable lengthwise within said shell carrying a projection rid-ingin said channel said-pl-unger'affor-ding a clinging seat for one end of said stick thereby to carr, ,ndrno-ve said stick in 'contactable relation tosaid-smooth interior-wall surf-ace'sothat the' latter may guidingly maintain the former in lengthwise alignment with-said full open end of said casing shell, and telescoping coupling means includingrelatively'nestabl rnembers'havingreco rule throughout the farmers movement length- 9 tilinea-r relative bodily movement operatively con-- necting one end of said shell to the %nearest end of-saidplunger.

A handle-like applicative container as defined in claim 6, together with "a ferrule member closing the other end of the said shell shaped and disposedoutside of the latter to be "manually grasped to 'theexc'lusion of said shell betweenhone finger and thepalm of an operator s hand whereby saidshell may :be graspedand turnedrelatively to said ferrule member by the thumb and another finger of the operators same hand.

In a handle-like applicative container for holding as well as rapidly projecting and retracting a body of dispensible substance housed by said container, an elongated open-ended casing shell having a tubular wall presenting internally a smooth cylindrical face provided with a helical guide thread, a plunger adapted to carry said body of substance having a smooth cylindrical periphery slidably fitting said face of said shell, a circumferentially abbreviated projection laterally outstanding on said plunger periphery having guiding engagement with said thread thereby to occasion movement of said plunger lengthwise of said shell, a ferrule rotatably coupled to said shell and exposed for manipulation at one end of said shell, and extensible coupling means within said casing shell connected to be turned by said ferrule constructed and arranged to drive and maintain said plunger in fixed rotative relation to said ferrule throughout the formers movement lengthwise of said shell.
9. In a handle-like applicative container for holding as well as rapidly projecting and retracting a body of dispensible substance housed by said container, an elongated open-ended casing shell having a tubular Wall presenting internally a smooth cylindrical face provided with a helical guide thread, a plunger adapted to carry said body of substance having a smooth cylindrical periphery slidably fitting said face of said shell and having guiding engagement with said thread thereby to occasion movement of said plunger lengthwise of said shell, a ferrule rotatably coupled to said shell and exposed for manipulation at one end of said shell, and extensible coupling means within said casing shell connected to be turned by said ferrule constructed and arranged to drive and maintain said plunger in fixed rotative relation to said ferrule throughout the formers movement lengthwise of said shell, said coupling means further comprising members constructed and arranged to be relatively slidable in a rectilinear path.
10. In an applicative container adapted to serve as an elongated hollow handle for holding as well as projecting and retracting axially thereof a contained body of dispensible sub-stance, an elongated open-ended shell member having a tubular wall with a smooth interior cylindrical face bordering a space within said container receptive to said body, a plunger member havin a smooth cylindrical periphery slidable axially within and guidably filling said space and having a socket retainingly receptive to one end of said body, mutually telescoping members for propelling said plunger member rotatably and axially of said shell member located between said plunger seat and one end of said shell, means affordin screw engagement between said plunger member and said shell member, and means operatively correlating one of said telescoping members to the other of said telescoping members in a manner positively to restrict relative rotary movement therebetween while freely permitting relative axial sliding movement therebetween.
11. In a handle-like applicative container for holding projecting and retracting a body of dispensible substance housed by said container, an elongated open-ended casing shell provided with an internal helical guide thread, a plunger adapted to carry said body of substance slidably fitting the inside of said shell and having guiding engagement with said thread thereby to occasion movement of said plunger lengthwise of said shell, a ferrule of larger diameter than the maximum girth of said shell exposed for manipulation at one end of said shell and having a central well, and extensible coupling means within said casing shell connected to be turned by said ferrule in part occupying said well and extending to the nearest end of said plunger and constructed and arranged to maintain said plunger constantly in fixed rotative relation to said ferrule throughout the formers movement lengthwise of said shell.
12. In a handle-like applicative container for holding and projecting a body of dispensible substance, an elongated open-ended outer casing shell-having an internal helical guide thread and provided at its bottom end with an external circumferential flange, a manually turnable ferrule assembled with said shell at the bottom end thereof having an annular rim shaped to embrace said fiange loosely in a manner to hold said casing shell and ferrule together while permitting their relative rotation, a plunger cup adapted to carry said body of substance slidable and rotatable inside of said shell in direct guiding engagement therewith and with said thread, and'telesoopically related elements having rectilinear relative bodily movement operatively interposed between said manually turnable member and said plunger, one of said elements being connected to be turnable by said ferrule and another one of said elements being connected to turn said plunger.
13. In an expellant lipstick holder and container, the combination of, an open ended cylindrical tubular casing having an internal helical guide thread and provided at its bottom end with an external annular bead, a cap-like ferrule closing said bottom end of the casing having an annular rim shaped to embrace said bead loosely in a manner to hold said ferrule and easing together and permit their relative rotation, a driving post extending to and based fixedly on said ferrule and upstanding therefrom centrally within said casing, a cup-like plunger for carrying said lipstick substantially filling the internal girth of said casing and slidable lengthwise thereof in guiding engagement therewith and having a lug slidably engaged with said guide thread, a driven shank fixedly carried by said plunger and depending therefrom toward said ferrule centrally of said casing, said shank and post being telescopically movable in overlapping relationship, and a tubular coupling so operatively interposed telescopically between said post and said shank that the turning of said ferrule relative to said casing causes said plunger to rotate relative to said casing while said lug and guide thread cause the plunger to slide to various positions lengthwise of said casing.
14. In an expellant lipstick holder and container, the combination defined in claim 13, in which the said tubular coupling is hollow and of size and shape to slide telescopically inside of said driving post and outside of said driven shank.

In an expellant lipstick containing holder, the combination of, an open ended casing having an internally threaded tubular wall carrying an external annular bead, a cup-shaped ferrule having a cross wall closing the open end of said casing and having an internal annular groove spaced .from said cross wall occupied by said bead, a
plunger for carrying lipstick peripherally filling said tubular casing and slidable lengthwise thereof in guiding engagement with the threaded internal surface of said tubular Wall, a post carried by said ferrule having a rotary driving shape extending from said cross wall into said casing, and a hollow driven shank fixedly carried by said plunger projecting toward and overlapping and propellingly engaged by said shape of said drivin post and telescopically intervening between the latter and said threaded tubular wall of the casing.
