1 Claim.

This invention relates to improvements in a lipstick holder and has fori its principal object the provision of a screw typ-e lipstick and a specinc structure and arrangement for the operating sleeve, lipstick carrier and' operating tubes having the helical and longitudinal slots so4 that there is an overlapping f partsto reinforce the device and promote smoother operation.

Other objects are simplicity and economy of construction, and ease and eiciency of operation.

With these, as well as other objects which will appear during the course of the specification, in View, reference will be had to the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a side elevation of a combined lipstick and applicator embodying this invention.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device shown in Fig. 1 with the lipstick in the operative position.

Fig. 3 is a similar View to that shown in Fig 2 with the applicator in position for use.

Fig. 4 is an enlarged longitudinal central section of the device with parts broken away to disclose certain features.

Fig. 5 is a cross sectional vieW taken on line V-V of Fig. 4.

Through the several views like reference characters refer to similar parts and the numeral l0 designates a built up tubular body member comprising an outer tube I2 and an inner tube I4 securely fitted together to prevent relative movement thereof. A slight indenture I6 may be made to insure their relative fixed relation. The inner tube I4 is provided with a helical slot I8 having a suiiiciently long lead to permit movement of a member therein when forced to rotate ther-ein by a straight edge disposed parallel with the axis of the body member. For convenience of operation the slot extends substantially the full length of tube I4 and about three-quarters of the Way therearound. The length and lead of this helical slot might be materially changed Without interfering with the general working of the movable parts. The outer end of tube I 2 is slightly ilanged inwardly at 29 to permit of easy positioning of the cap 22 thereover and to present a smooth edge to prevent injury to the lips. The outer end of the inner tube I4 is spaced inwardly from the outer end of tube I2 and presents an annular shoulder 23. A sleeve 24 rotatably mounted in'body member Iii. comprises a relatively long inner tubular member 26 and a short outer tubular member 28 tightly fitted together'for uniform relative movement. Sleeve 24 extends substantially the full length of body member H3 with one end portion protruding therefrom to receive the outer tubular member 28. The tubular member` A28.; is

provided with a ringed flange 39 which engagesy the end` of body member Il] to prevent inward movement of the sleeve. Sleeve tube 25 is provided with a longitudinal slot 3| which is preferably parallel with the axis of the tube.

The outwardly projecting flange 32 formed adjacent the outer end of tube 26 rests against the outer end of tube 24 to preclude the removal of the sleeve from the body member. The ange 39 also serves as a stop to limit the movement of the cap 22 over the body member I0. The outer end of tube 28 is substantially coextensive with tube 2S and is tapered at 34, also the flange 3i! forms an oiset shoulder 35 with the main body of tube 28 over which is slidably mounted a cap 3B which serves to protect the applicator 40 which is secured with its one end portion 4I projected into tube 25. 'Ihe end portion of tube 25 is rolled inwardly to form a flange 42 to engage the side wall of t'he applicator to prevent accidental longitudinal movement thereof. 'I'he outer end portionv of applicator 40 is formed to present an operating edge 44. This applicator is preferably made of pliable rubber that will normally hold its form and will also present a smooth surface for contacting the lips. A struck-out detent 46 formed in tub-e 28 serves to hold cap 28 in the closed position, and detent 48 formed outwardly from tube I2 engages the inner Wall of cap 22 to hold it in position.

A cup'shaped carrier 50 adapted to receive the inner end of lipstick 52 is slidably mounted in sleeve 24. The end wall 54 of cup 50 is provided with an opening 56 to admit the escape of air as the lipstick is being positioned therein. Transversely mounted in carrier 50 is a pin 53 having a head or detent 69 which is secured to the side wall of the carrier cup and projects through slot 3I and into the helical groove i8. The pin 58 serves to engage the plastic lipstick to hold it in proper position in the carrier cup. The pin head 6G engages the opposite ends of slot 30 to limit its distance of travel in the sleeve.

In the operation of the device, if the operator desires to use the lipstick, cap 22 is removed and the sleeve 24 is rotated in the body member so that the head 60 will travel in both of the slots I8 and 3| to move the lipstick to the exposed position for use. By reversing the relative rotation of the body member and sleeve, the lipstick will be returned to the inoperative position. To use the applicator, the cap 38 is removed to expose the applicator which is ready for use. When applicator 4D is being used, the lipstick Will be completely covered by cap 22 so that no lipstick material will be exposed during the smoothing operation. The excess lipstick material deposited on the lips will cling to the applicator and can be wiped therefrom before replacing cap 38, An opening 43 is formed through applicator 40 to permit the passage of air from the sleeve 26 as the carrier is moved longitudinally therein.

It will be noted that the inner end of the applicator serves as a closure for tube 25 and that the carrier cup, when fully inserted, extends past flange 30 to substantially meet the inner end of the applicator. This arrangement of the overlapping parts serves to reinforce the parts at the joining line of the body member and the rotary sleeve.

It is Very apparent that the same general movement of the lipstick carrier might be had by reversing the operating parts and forming the straight slot in the body member and the spiral slot in the rotary sleeve. Furthermore the body member and the sleeve members might each be made of a single tube formed to present the proper contours.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:

In a device of the character described a tubular body member having a helical groove formed within the inner wall thereof; a longitudinally slotted sleeve mounted in said body member with one of its end portions extended outwardly therefrom, having a laterally protruding bead adjacent its other end to engage said body member to prevent longitudinal movement in one direction relative to said body member and having an outwardly anged tubular member rigidly secured to the outwardly projecting end of the sleeve to abut and engage the outer end of said body member to prevent relative longitudinal movement of the body member and said sleeve; a lipstick carrier slidably mounted for relative longitudinal movement in said sleeve, normally positioned to overlap the joint between the said body member and said sleeve and being spaced inwardly from the outwardly extending end of said sleeve; a laterally extending detent carried by the wall of said helical groove whereby when said sleeve is rotated as the body member is held stationary the lipstick carrier will move longitudinally of said body member.
