(Cl. 18S-75) 1 Claim. 1
This invention relates to a mullion construction for metal windows, the subject matter of the application being divided out of our co-pending application Serial No. 647,560, filed February 14, 1946, now Patent No. 2,473,298, dated June 14, 1949.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a mullion construction which takes advantage of the flanges on the metal window frame which are used normally when only one frame is set in an opening to accommodate the anchor and seal the window within the opening.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a filler strip which is positively secured to the adjacent jambs of two metal frames to secure the frames together, and in vthe provision of a cover plate which secures and draws the jambs of the frames together by a frictional wedging action.
In the drawing the single ligure shows a cross section of the jambs of two adjacent window frames with the ller strip and cover plate securing the same together.
One frame is indicated generally by the reference numeral A, and the other by the reference numeral B, only sections of the frames being shown. Each of these frames includes a parting bead I and guide flanges II and I2. The guide flanges II and I2 with the parting bead form channels I3 for the reception of the side rails of the sash in the manner disclosed in our Patent No. 2,569,386, dated September 25, 1951.
Extending outwardly from the frames are flanges I4 and I 5. Each of these vertical flanges I4 is provided with an inwardly extending vertical ilange I6 which, when two of the windows are set in abutting relation, abut each other as disclosed in the drawing. Each ofthe vertical flanges I5 is provided with outwardly extending flanges I'l and inwardly extending flanges I8 which abut each other when two of the windows are set in contiguous relationship.
These inwardly extending anges I6 and I8 cooperate with the frame anchorwhen a single window is used, as disclosed in our Patent No. 2,569,386, dated September 25, 1951, and, additionally, they function to align the two frames in the manner explained above when two of the frames are arranged in contiguous relationship.
Extending outwardly from the flanges II arel 2 flanges I9 which form a channel 2U therebetween, the channel extending substantially the full length of the jamb, as do the llanges I6, Il and I8.
A liller strip 2|, which may be either of wood or metal, is disposed between these flanges I9 and within the channel 20, and is secured to the flanges by suitable means such as screws 22, thus holding the flanges I6 in their abutting relationship and preventing movements thereof.
At the opposite side of the window frames a cover plate 23, which is substantially coextensive with the jambs of the frames vertically, is arranged and is provided with a chamfered groove 24 which is substantially coextensive with the cover plate. When the cover plate is applied with the ilanges I1 located in the chamfered groove the forcing of the edges of the cover plate into contact with the flanges I2 wedges the flanges I'I in the chamiered groove and draws the flanges I1 and I8 on the two jambs tightly together and maintains them in that position.
Thus withthe edges of the filler strip 2| abutting the flanges I4 and the filler strip drawn tightly thereagainst, with the flanges I6 abutting each other, with the flanges I8 abutting each other and the flanges I'l abutting each other, and with the edges of the cover plate 23 tightly engaging the flanges I2 and the llanges I'l wedged within the chamfered groove 24, the adjacent jambs of the two adjacent windows of the metal type will be securely held together and the joint will be covered with weatherprooilng strips which also act as finish strips.` y
We have described the particular construction that is illustrated in the drawing, but it will be realized that some changes may be made in the design without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the single claim.
We claim:
In a metallic window construction, a pair -of window frames having hollow vertical jamb members arranged contiguous to each other, inwardly extending vertical flanges on said jamb members arranged in contact with each other at both sides of said jamb members, an outwardly extending vertical llange on each of said jamb members and in spaced relation to each other to form a channel for the reception of a filler strip, a filler strip located in said channel, means securing said ller REFERENCES CITED The following references are of record in the vr;
