leakage and prevent rattling. The resilientenl gagement issuch, that while the windows .at all times maintain a tight seal against the weather, the sashes slide freely without sticking or bindtherrobjects of the invention are to provide an improved construction for permitting the removal of sashes. improved means for securing the frames in the window opening of the build- "ing and an improved construction whereby the jamb members may be secured together to provide reinforced mullions, having space therein for reception of mullion reinforcing bars.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved construction in which portions of the frame and portions of the sash cooperate to form recesses for counterbalancing means.
Other objects and advantages will appear from th following description of certain embodiments of the invention chosen to illustrate the principles thereof. g
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a window having certain embod ments of the invention illustrated therein;
Figure 2 is a horizontal section of the windowof Fig. 1 showing the cooperation between the showing the method of securing the bonding means to the'frame;
Figure 5 is a horizontal section of sash and is. The intermediate portion ofjthe channel is bent towards the inside of the window opening nels may be placed back to back to form amultoprovide sash guiderails connected by web 3|, All of these parts are preferably formed of a single sheet of metal folded, drawn,-or rolled to form. The metal used is preferably noncorrosive or non-ferrous, although this is not in all cases essential. side of a window opening is preferably providedwith means for bonding to the masonry such as corrugated strips 32. For engaging the corrugated strips with the jamb channel any suitable means may be used, but preferably the jamb channel adjacent ,to the oifsets therein forming the sash guide rails is provided with notches 34. The bonding member 32 is provided at its inner endwith tongues 35 and 36 adapted to interlock in the notches 34, and as illustrated particularly in Figs. 1, 2, and 4, one of the tongues 35 may be bent downward out of the plane of strip 32 and the other tongue 36' may be bent upward whereby a secure engagement between the strip and the frame is obtained.
The form of the lamb is such that where a multiple unit window is desired, two jamb chanlion as shown in Fig; 3. The two lamb channels may be firmly secured together in any suitframe showing the method of removal of the sash;
Figure 6 is a horizontal section of a frame and sash of a modified construction. I
Referring to the drawing in detail and particularly to Figs. 1 through 5 the window framea header its edges'to form inwardly and outwardly Drojecting beads 21 and 28 and to provide marginal able manner, for instance by means of G-shaped clamping strips 31-.of the form shown in our copending application Serial No, 238,352, filed November 2, 1938, these clamps being held in place by means of screws 38 or in any suitable manner and preferably containing a packing 39 for tightly sealing the space between the jamb channels. forcement of the mullion is sometimes desired. This may be accomplished by providing metal bars fitting the spaces between the backs of the jamb channels. For instance a metal bar 40 may be placed between the backs of webs 3| and if needed additional reinforcing bars 4| may be fitted inside of the hollow sash guiding rails.
The sash stiles are of channel shape and include a base 45 carrying glass receiving means and being provided with an inside flange 46 terminating in an overhanging lip 41 and an out- 4 gage the edge of the sash guide rail and having 1 flanges 23 and 24- which terminate in lips 25 and "at its other edge a flange 54 which terminates The Jamb member at the Where th window opening is large, rein- 2 a in a reentrant resilient tongue I! adapted to bear againstthe side of the sash guide rail.
The flange 48 of the sash stile GGI'HEMG laterally projecting flange 80 which extends fairly close to the lip 25 so as to nearly flll the space 1 between the edge of such lip and the stile of the sash. When the sash is removed, sufficient space is left between the edge of the lip II and the sash guide rail 30 to permit access to the counterbalancing means 85,.
The construction of the sash and lamb in this form of the invention is such as to permit removal of the sash, although no part of the lamb channel or sash guiding rails can be displaced. The removal of the sash may be accomplished by endwise removal of the resilient guiding and sealing member contained in one of the sash stile channels, or preferably the resilient guide and sealing members are so formed as to permit sumcient lateral displacement of the sash in the plane of the window as illustrated in Fig. 5 to allow the sash stile at the oppositeside of the sash to clear its sash guiding rail so that such sash stile may be swung inwardly permitting the sash to be removed without removal of any part of'the frame or detachment'of one part of thesash from another.
The header member 2| shown in Fig. 1 comprises a metal member which may be formed of non-corrosive or non-ferrous metal if desired, and which is bent to provide a parting strip and an outside flange ll, preferably terminating in abeaded edge 12. In the channel between the parting strip and the flange a bead 13 is formed. The top rail 14 of the sash is provided 7 with an inner flange l5 terminating in a lip l6 and with an outer flange H which carries a lug 18. Retained by the lug I8 and the lip I6 isa resilient metal sealingmember 80 adapted to contact with the head 13 to seal the head of the sash. The ends of the flanges I5 and TI are adapted to contact with the member 2| at each side of the bead 13 so that a three point seal is provided. The header member 2| may be reinforced by means of an angle member 8! which 7 also serves for engagement with the masonry or projecting lip 99. A sill reinforcing channel ltd is secured to the flange 98 and projects downwardly where it may be supported upon the masonry.
Figure 6 illustrates another modified form of window embodying our invention. In the construction here shown the jamb and sash guiding ribs are of the same form as shown in Figures 1 7 through 4 and need not beagaln described. The sash stiles are of channeled form and comprise a glass carrying base I40 carrying an inner flange HI and an outer flange I 43 terminating in a lip I. Near the bottom of the channel in the sash stile formed by these flanges, a pair of lugs I and I36 respectively are provided. A resilient sealing andguiding member, formed of stainless steel, bronze or other resilient metal, is mounted in each sash stile channel and retained in position by these lugs. In the form shown in Fig. 6 the resilient member comprises a base I 50 resting on the bottom of the channel and carrying at one edge a resilient tongue iii adapted to bear against the innerface of the sash guide. The base I50 carries at its other edge an outwardly projecting resilient tongue I52 which bears against the inner side of the sash guiding rib I It, and serves to draw the sash inwardly so as to hold the lip I in contact with the outer face of the sash guide rib. A threepoint sealing engagement is thus secured between the sash and sash guide rib, which effectively seals the sash against the weather, while at the same time permiting some yielding movement of the sash both in the plane of the glass and at right angles thereto, so
that the sash may be described as a floating sash which will slide freely at all times without sticking, jamming or rattling. v
As described in connection with Figs. 1 to 4, the sash stile carries a laterally projecting flange 80 which extends fairly close to the lip 25.
While we have illustrated and described in detail certain preferred forms of our invention, it is to be understood that changes may be made therein and the invention embodied in other structures. We do not, therefore, desire to limit ourselves to the specific construction illustrated, but intend to cover our invention broadly in whatever form its principle may be utilized.
