It is the purpose of myin-vention-to'provide a simple and economical lightweight constructed polishing machine which can-he conveniently operated --by hand in movementof the machine over a surface being polished-thusadapting-- the machine for polishing or buffing surfacesofany type or kind.

It will thus be seen that as the plunger valve I1 is raised, the fluid I4 is permitted to enter the chamber 52 and be discharged through the nozzle discharge 39.
The plunger valve has a transverse aperture 53 having a semi-circular enlargement 54 at one side thereof and the web I5 has an aperture 55 registering with the plunger aperture, in which is mounted an operating arm 56, which extends into the aperture 53 of the plunger valve I1 and is adapted to raise said valve against the action of a spring 51, seating on the upper end of the valve. The upper end of the spring is housed in a bore 58 formed in the cap I8, as seen in Fig. 3.
The hand grip portions I9 and 20 are of channel cross sectional form in order to lighten the same, and in the channel of the hand grip I9, adjacent the bore 58, is a long bearing portion 59 in which is mounted a manually operated plunger 60 having an enlarged fingerpiece head 6|. To the lower end of the plunger is pivoted the arm 56, as seen at 62. It will thus be seen that the spring 51 normally supports the plunger in raised position with the valve I! in closed position. By depressing upon the fingerpiece 6|, the plunger rod 60 is moved downwardly and the valve I1 is moved upwardly against the action of the spring 51. In this operation the arm 56 has a free pivotal action in the aperture 55.
Arranged in the fluid cylinder I3 is a piston 63 which is held in pressure engagement with the fluid I4 through the medium of a spring 34 seating'on the piston and on a detachable cap 65, having any suitable quick detachment with the upper open endof the cylinder I3, for example, by pins 66 engaging bayonet slots 61 in the cylinder I3. The cap 65 has a center depending lug 6B apertured to receive one end of a chain or other flexible coupling 69, the other end of which is secured centrally of the piston 63, as seen at III, in Fig. 3 of the drawing. The cap 65 has a radially and upwardly extending fingerpiece portion II facilitating attachment and detachment thereof..
Upon removing the cap 65, the piston 63 may be drawn upwardly through the chain 89 in the operation of refilling the cylinder I3 with fluid, as at I4. The spring 64 will be tensioned to discharge substantially all of the fluid cylinder I3 and in normally filling or replenishing the supply of fluid to the cylinder it is desirable to not fill the cylinder I3 more than approximately half full.
It will be apparent from a consideration of Figs. 2 and 3, that the hand grip portions I9 and 20 are disposed centrally and extend radially with respect to the axis of rotation of the disc -4I upon the nozzle stud 36. Considering Fig. 1 of the drawing, it will be apparent that the lower portion of the casing I terminates in a disclike portion 12, the upper edges of which are preferably rounded, as seen in said figure, and the cylinder portion II is offset outwardly with respect to this disc, whereas the cylinder I3 is disposed within the peripheral boundaries of the disc.
Secured to the hand grip portion 20 in substantially the same position as assumed by the manual control plunger 60 is a standard electric 4 switch I3 with which connects the electric extension cord I4 for providing source of current supply to the motor of the machine. Extending from the switch are conductor wires I5 which extend into the cap I8 for coupling with the motor I2, as will be apparent. This construction is indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, but the details thereof are omitted from the other figures, as this wiring forms no part of the present invention.
One distinctive feature of my invention, however, resides in the fact that the two controls, namely the button GI and the switch I3 are disposed on inner portions of the hand grips I9 and 20 so that in grasping these hand grips, the thumbs of the hands can be utilized to control stopping and starting of the motor and discharge of polishing or other fluid I4 through the nozzle discharge 3!! directly onto the surface being polished. One advantage of this particular construction resides in the fact that a definite control of the amount of polishing or other fluid supplied to the surface is maintained. This obviates undue saturation of the polishing medium or member 43, maintaining the same in at least a semi-dry state at all times.
While the machine has been shown and described as a polishing machine, it will be apparent that any type of facing material can be mounted upon the disc 4| or attached to the frame 44. The assemblage comprising the frame 44, disc 4| and the bearing 41 is made detachable with respect to the rest of the machine or the nozzle stud 36 through the medium of a lock spring ring I6 engaging the annular recess 40, as clearly seen in Fig. 3 of the drawing.
Considering Fig. 3 of the drawing, it will appear that the lower end of the cylinder I3 has a shoulder portion 11 eliminating downward movement of the piston 63, so as to avoid sticking of the piston in the cylinder, as will be apparent.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is; 7
1. In a machine of the class described, a casing having two cylinders joined by a connecting web, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain an electric motor vertically disposed in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a fluid reservoir, said web containing a valve bore, a plunger valve mounted in said bore and controlling discharge from said reservoir, a pair of hand grips on the casing centrally thereof, and manually actuated means on one of said hand grips for moving the plunger valve into open position in controlling discharge of fluid from said reservoir.
2. In a machine of the class described, a casing having two cylinders joined by a connecting web, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain an electric motor vertically disposed in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a fluid reservoir, said web containing a valve bore, a plunger valve mounted in said bore and controlling discharge from said reservoir, a pair of hand grips on the casing centrally thereof, manually actuated means on'one of said hand grips for moving the plunger valve into open position in controlling discharge of fluid from said reservoir, and a spring in said bore and en gaging said plunger valve to normally support the valve in closed position.
3. In a machine of the class described, a casing having two cylinders joined by a connecting web, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain an electric motor vertically disposed in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a fluid reservoir, said web containing a valve bore, a plunger valve mounted in said bore and controlling discharge from said reservoir, a pair of hand grips on the casing centrally thereof, manually actuated means on one of said hand grips for moving the plunger valve into open position in controlling discharge of fluid from said reservoir, and said hand grips constituting part of a cover forming a closure for said first named cylinder.

In a machine of the class described, a casing having two cylinders joined by a connecting web, said web having a bore, the upper ends of the cylinders being open, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain a vertically disposed motor in said cylinder, the other cylinder comprising a reservoir, a cap for the motor cylinder, a quick detachable cap for the reservoir cylinder, said first named cap having oppositely directed hand grip portions arranged centrally of.

In a machine of the class described, a casing having two cylinders joined by a connecting web, said web having a bore, upper ends of the cylinders being open, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain a vertically disposed motor in said cylinder, the other cylinder comprising a reservoir, a cap for the motor cylinder, a quick detachable cap for the reservoir cylinder, said first named cap having oppositely directed hand grip portions arranged centrally of the casing and intermediate said cylinders, a valve in said bore controlling discharge from said reservoir, a coil spring in said bore and normally supporting the valve in closed position, a manually operated plunger in one of said hand grips, and an arm pivoted to said plunger and freely coupled with said valve.

In a machine of the character described, a casing having a pair of cylinders spaced and joined by a web, the cylinders and web havin bores opening through the top thereof, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain a vertically disposed motor in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a reservoir having a discharge port communicating with said Web bore, means in the reservoir for pressure discharge of fluid therefrom, a cap closing said motor cylinder, said cap including a bore registering with the bore of said web, a'plunger valve and a coil spring in the web and cap bores, said valve normally closing discharge port, means for moving the valve into open position against the action of said spring, a quick detachable cap for the reservoir cylinder, and a pair of outwardly and downwardly extending hand grips integral with the first named cap and arranged centrally of said casing.

In a machine of the character described, a casing having a pair of cylinders spaced and joined by a Web, the cylinders and web having bores opening through the top thereof, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain a vertically disposed motor in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a reservoir having a discharge port communicating with said web bore, means in the reservoir for pressure discharge of fluid therefrom, a valve in the web portion, a cap closing said motor cylinder, said cap including a bore registering with the bore of said web, a quick detachable cap for the reservoir cylinder,
a pair of outwardly and downwardly extending hand grips integral with the first named cap and arranged centrally of said casing, and a coil spring in the cap and web bores and engaging said valve to normally support the valve in position closing said discharge port.

In a machine of the character described, a casing having a pair of cylinders spaced and joined by a web, the cylinders and web having bores opening through the top thereof, one of said cylinders being adapted to contain a vertically disposed motor in said cylinder, the other cylinder forming a reservoir having a discharge port communicating with said web bore, means in the reservoir for pressure discharge of fluid therefrom, a valve in the web portion, a cap closing said motor cylinder, saidcap including a bore registering with the bore of said web, a quick detachable cap for the reservoir cylinder, a pair of outwardly and downwardly extending hand grips integral with the first named cap and arranged centrally of said casing, a coil spring in the cap and web bores and engaging said valve to normally support the valve in position closing said discharge port, and manually operated means in one hand grip portion for actuating said valve.
