JOHN W. MADDOX, OF JAMESTOWN, NEW YORK.
RUBBING POLISHING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 19, 1916.
Application filed January 7, 1916. Serial No. 70,830.
To all whom itmag concern Be it known that I, JOHN MADnoX, a
Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rubbing and Polishing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved machine arranged for manual manipulation and especially adapted for use in rubbing and polishing furniture and other articles, the object of the invention being to provide an improved machine of this character which embodies inner and outer concentrically arranged revoluble rubbing and polishing elements and means for rotating said rubbing and polishing elements in opposite directions and with the inner element at a higher rate of speed than the outer element so that the inner revoluble element tends to form a suction toward the center which overcomes the centrifugal force caused by the rotation of the outer rubbing and polishing element and prevents the abrasive material from being thrown outwardly from the center, the provision of the two oppositely rotating rubbing and polishing elements also preventing and avoiding scratching and marring of the surface on which the machine is operated and also preventing the machine from manifesting a tendency to rotate in one direction, and thus lessen the labor of manipulating the machine.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed,
In the accompanying drawings :-Figure 1 is a side elevation partlyin section of a rubbing and polishing machine constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan of the same.
The body 1 of the machine is here shown as provided with a head 2 having depending handles 3 at opposite ends thereof and as also provided with a casing l-in which a suitable motor, such for instance an electric motor is arranged. The motor shaft is indicated at 5, and is provided with agear 6 which is arranged within the casing 4:. The lower or outer end of the said motor shaft is rotated as at 7 and said motor shaft is also provided with a gear 8 which is arranged in the center of an outer annular casing 9 which is open at its outer or lower s1 e.
A shaft 10 is mounted in a bearing 11 and is provided with a. gear 12, at its inner end, which engages the gear 6, said shaft 10 having a pinion 13 at its outer end and which is arranged in'the chamber formed by the casing 9. An inner revoluble disk 14: is threaded with the end of the motor shaft and is provided with a rubbing ring 15 which may be made of any suitable material such as felt or the like. The disk 14 and the corresponding portion of the motor shaft having a ball-bearing 16. An outer disk 17 has a ball-bearing 18 and is also provided with an internal gear 19 which is engaged by the pinion 13, said pinion also engaging the gear 8. The outer disk is provided with a rubbing ring 20 similar to the ring 15 and arranged concentrically with respect thereto. Each disk with its rubbing ring constitutes a rubbing and polishing element.-
Owing to the provision of the gears hereinbefore described the rubbing and polishing elements are rotated in reverse directions and with the inner rubbing and polishing element at a higher rate of speed than the outer rubbing and polishing element. This causes the inner polishing element to create suction toward the center which overcomes the centrifugal force occasioned by the rotation of the outer rubbing and polishing element and hence prevents the abrasive material used with the machine in polishing from being thrown away or outwardly from the center. By the provision of the oppositely revoluble inner and outer rubbing and polishing elements all tendency of the machine as a whole to operate in one direction is obviated thus minimizing the labor of manually operating the machine and the rubbing and polishing elements are also prevented from scratching or otherwise marring the surface on which the machine is used.
While I have herein shown and described a preferred form of my invention I would have it understood that changes may be made in-the form, proportion and construcfrom the spirit of the invention and Within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim I A rubbing and polishing machine of the class described comprising oppositely r0- tating inner and outer rubbing and dishing elementsc0ncentrically arrange said inner polishing element having its face provided with a central hollow portion, and
means to rotate the said rubbing and polishing elements in reverse directions and with the inner rubbing and polishing elements at a higher rate of speed than the bing and polishing elements.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN W. MADDOX. Witnesses:
MABEL Monsn, CARL O. HULTGREN.
