CHRISTIAN F. DILG AND CHARLES H. J. DILG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
ROLL FOR POLISHING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 667,300, dated February 5, 1901.
Application filed January 12. 1900- Serial No. 1,210. (NomodeL) To ctZ wit/mt it may concern:
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN F. DILG and CHARLES H. J. DILG, citizens of the United States, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Roll for a Polishing-Machine, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
Ourinvention relates to machines designed for cleaning, removing roughness from. and rubbing up and producing a smooth glossy surface by friction upon various articles-as, for example, cutlery; and it has for its object the provision of a roll adapted to be used in machines of the kind set forth, simple in construction, inexpensive to manufacture, and efficient in practical use.
To attain the desired end, this our invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and operation of parts herein set forth.
In the drawings which accompany and form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of our roll. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a view in detail of a part of our roll.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in all the views.
Referring particularly to the drawings, A denotes a shaft constructed and arranged to support one or more of our cleaning-rolls. Mounted upon said shaft is a sleeve G, provided at its ends with recesses g, formed in its periphery. A flange or disk G is also carried by said shaft and is provided with a sleeve provided at one extremity with projections constructed and arranged to mesh with the said recesses g and at the other end with one or more recesses g The said flange serves to prevent d ust or powder from getting into the bearings of our machine. A pin g is slipped into said shaft within the recess g and the said pin is held in place by a screw 00 located in the end of said shaft A Upon the sleeve G are mounted concentric disks H, which are, near their centers, inwardly inclined and then flare o-utwardly at the outer portions or circumferences thereof, each pair of disks being ordinarily secured together, as by screws h or with a thread on the sleeve. Within the converging and flaring edges of each roll,
preferably provided with radial ribs K we place a ring or body of yielding, flexible, or elastic material, as of rubber J, the same being ordinarily faced with flexible material, preferably consisting of leather K, coated with emery, rottenstone, orany suitable cleaning or polishing powder. The elastic ring J may be held rigidly in position within the flanges of the disks H either by the screws h, which hold the pair of disks together, or by a plurality of longitudinal ribs 74;, as shown in Fig. 3, or by means of both secu ring means. The said ring J is preferably formed with 0ppositely-disposed flat faces at its inner portion, which faces first converge in a curved line toward a plane parallel with the sides of the roll and then, curving outward, diverge radially from said plane and finally terminate at its outer portion in two sides or faces ordinarily parallel with the said plane.
As it is manifest that many changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of our invention, we would have it understood that we do not restrict ourselves to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that such changes and equivalents may be substituted therefor, and that What we claim as our invention is- 1. A cleaning-roll consisting of a ring of elastic material with a yielding face, and having concentric holding means consisting of a pair 'of side disks formed with a horizontal seat for the said ring, and with convex or inwardly-converging and upwardly-extending portions to rigidly grasp the ring, and with superimposed concave or outwardly-flaring, cuplike, flanged extremities to support the said ring, and to preventthe same from flattening laterally, the two concentric holding means being secured together by a bolt passing through both of them and the said ring, and also being provided with radial ribs.
2. A cleaning-roll consisting of a sleeve provided with a plurality of recesses in its end, and being provided with side disks and an intermediate ring of elastic material with a yielding face, in combination with a shaft to enter said sleeve, and with a disk or flange carried by said shaft and provided with projections to engage the recesses of said sleeve to prevent dust from getting into the bearings of the machine, and also provided with a recess to engage a pin on the shaft, and also With Said pin.
In testimony of the foregoing specification we do hereby sign the same, in the city of New York, nonnty and State of New York, this 261 h day of December, A. D. 1899.
