John V. Frendo, Detroit, Mich. Application August 30, 1944, Serial No. 551,971
This invention relates to a-block cleaner and more particularly to a block cleaner driven by an electric motor or the like.
A primary object of this invention is the provision of an improved electrically driven Cleaning device for butchers blocks or the like.
An additional important object is the-provision of improved mounting means for the rotating brush of such a device.
A further object is the provision of such mounting means as to resiliently increase pressure or force exerted by the brush on the surface to be cleaned and preclude the transmission of shock imparted to the brush, to the motor of the device.
Still further objects reside in the combination of elements, arrangements of parts, and features of construction, all as will be more fully pointed out hereinafter and disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein there is shown a preferred embodiment of this inventive concept.
In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevational view of one form of device embodying this invention.
Figure 2 is bottom plan view of the device shown in Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an enlarged side sectional view of the device of Figure 1, taken through the center thereof.
Like reference numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
Having reference now to the drawings, there is generally indicated at I!) a block cleaner having a body comprised of three portions, a main body portion II, a head or cover portion [2, and a base or skirt portion 13. Positioned within body portion II) is an electric motor of any desired type including a rotor 14, a stator and brushes I6 and I1. Rotor i4 is journaled in a suitable journal l8 in the base of body portion I I and has a drive shaft l9 extending through an aperture in the same exterior of the body. The other end of the shaft I9 is joumaled in a suitable recess 29 in cover or head portion l2.
Body portion II is generally cylindrical in shape and is provided with an extending lug 2| adapted to form a support for a handle member 22, the other end of which is engaged by an extension 23 comprising a portion of member !2. Handle 22 has a bore 24 therein through which is passed a pair of conductors 25 and 25 which extend through a suitable recess 21 in cover member I 2 and through a conventional two position switch 28 to terminals 29 and 30 of brushes l6 and I1, respectively.
2 Claims. (Cl. 1528) Member I2 is also provided with a projection 3| oppositely disposed with respect to handle 22, to which is secured a handle 32 extending upwardly from the top portion !2. Handle 32 may, if desired, be mounted for rotation on a bolt 33 secured through a recess 34 in projection 3| by anut 35.
A suitable conduit 36 containing wires 25' and 26 extends outwardly from the lower portion of the handle 22 to any desired source of current.
Drive shaft [9 extends outwardly within the periphery of the skirt-like portion l3 and terminates in a threaded portion 40. A suitable Washer 4| is secured as by screws 42 to the base of portion II, and has an aperture therethrough to permit passage of drive shaft l9. Washer M provides a seat for one end of a coil spring 43 an extremity of which is adapted to engage in a suitable recess 44 to hold the same in position. The other end of the spring 43 abuts one face of a ball race 45, the lower face of which engages the top plate 46 of a wire brush 41, brush 41 being held securely on drive shaft 19 as by means of a nut 48 engaging threaded portion 40 and a dowel pin 49 securing the same against rotation.
The lower portion of skirt-like member I 3 is provided with a plurality of casters 50 on which the device is adapted to roll and the lower extremities of the bristles of brush 41 extend normally, when the device is lifted below casters 50, in such a manner that when the device is positioned on a surface to be cleaned the brush will spread outwardly to substantially fill the space within the periphery of skirt l3. A dirt shield 5| is provided comprised of a skirt preferably of resilient or flexible material and secured to the inside periphery of portion l3 as by suitable clips 52.
From the foregoing it will now be seen that there is herein provided a block cleaner which may be readily moved over the surface of a block or the like to be cleaned, wherein the brush is flexibly and resiliently mounted, by virtue of the spring 43 in such manner that pressure or force exerted thereon tending to force the same upwardly with respect to the casing Ill will not be transmitted to the drive shaft, and thus will not affect the interior working parts of the device.
It will also be seen that there is herein provided a construction accomplishing all the objects of this invention and others, including many advantages of great practical utility.
As man embodiments may be made of this inventive concept, and as many modifications may be made in the embodiment herein shown and described, it is to be understood that all matter herein is to be interpreted merely as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
I claim:
1. A scrubbing and scraping machine comprising a vertical cylindrical casing, a horizontal partition therein and detachable top and skirt portions securedto the extremities, of'said casing, a vertically disposed electric motor armature in said casing journalled in said top and partition, said armature extending through said partition, a wire bristle brush non-rotata'bly and slidably disposed on said armature, spring means between said partition and said brush for urging. thelatter downwardly in said skirt, an anti-friction bearing between said spring and said brush, a flexible guard surrounding said brush and detachably secured internally of said skirt, and a plurality of casters secured tothe lower edge of said,- skirt.
2, A scrubbing and scraping machine comprising a vertical cylindrical casing, a horizontal partitiontherein and detachable top and skirt portions secured to the extremities of said casing, a vertically disposed electric motor armature in said casing. journalled in said top and partition, said armature extending through'said partition, a wire bristle brushnon-rotatably and slidably disposed on said armature, spring means between said partition and said brush for urging the latter downwardly in said skirt, an anti-friction bearing between said spring and said brush, a flexible guard surrounding said brush and detachably secured internally of said skirt, and a plurality of casters secured to the lower edge of said skirt, a vertically disposed handle secured to integral lateral extensions of said casing and said top, electric cable receiving passages in said handle and in the upper extension, and an electric switch mounted upon said upper extension above the handle.
