Patented July 15, 1952 SOFA BED Louis Elliott Frey, Sacramento, Calif., assignor to: Duo-Bed .Corp' Sacramento, Calif., a ,cor-
poration of Nevada Application December 3, 1949, Serial No. 130,963
My invention relates to an improved combination sofa and bed.
It is frequently desirable, particularly in hotels and the like, to conserve space by combining a sofa and a bed into a single item of furniture. It is an object of this invention to provide an attractive, compact and inexpensive combination sofa and bed to accomplish this result.
It is a further object of this invention to provide locking means for preventing undesirable lateral displacement of the sofa-bed while utilized as a sofa, and readily releasable when it is de-' sired to utilize the combination as a bed. I
Still further objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent from the following description and the accompanying drawings wherein: a
Figure 1 is a perspective elevation of a pair of combination sofa-beds when used as a pair of sofas.
Figure 2 is a perspective elevation of a pair of combination sofa-beds when used as a pair of beds.
- Figure 3 is a perspective elevation of a single combination sofa and bed.
Figure 4' is a sectional view takenalong the line 44 of Figure 1, illustrating the. pivotal connection.
1 Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along the line 5-5 of Figure 4.
Referring now to Figure l, a frame is provided comprising side walls I I and I2, which run the full length of the beds l4 and I6, and are joined (not shown) behind the lamp [8. A top piece 20 is suitably mounted on said sides I l and i2 and supports the lamp 18, which is of any conventional design. Headboards 22 and 24 are pivotally connected to the top piece 20. v .Referring now to Figure 4. wherein headboard 22 is illustrated, secured to headboard 22 by bolt 26 is the angle iron 28 upon which the pin 30 is suitably mounted. Pin 30 protrudes through headboard 22am into the bushing 32, which is embedded in the top piece 20, thereby providing a pivotal connection with the top piece 20 at the upper extremity of the'headboard 22. Support member 34 is attached by bolts 38 to the top piece 20. Said support member 34 is provided with toes 31 and 38 which are identical in function. Toe 31 has a pin 40 suitably mounted on it which fits into the bushing 42, which is embedded in the headboard 22 and provides a pivotal connection at the base of the headboard 22. Headboard 24 is pivotally connected to the top piece 20 in the same manner as is headboard 22.
8 Claims. (01. -8)
As illustrated in Figures 4 and 5, the frame 44 of the bed I4 is bolted to the headboard 22. The bed I4 is otherwise supported on rollers 46, 48 and 50, as shown in Figure 3, so that when the bed It is pivoted it carries with it headboard 22.
The bed It is similarly supported on rollers and its frame is bolted to headboard 24 so that when the bed It is pivoted it carries with it headboard 24.
Back rests 52 and 54 are: pivotally mounted on the top piece at. Said back rests are. pivoted downwardly when the-sofa-bed is being. used as a sofa and pivoted upwardly when it. is being used as a bed. Said back rests. fit snugly against the mattresses 56-and 58 when the sofa-bed. is being utilized as a sofa, as-illustrated in Figure 1. Said back rests 52 and 54 operate, when pivoted downwardly, to lock the headboards 22 and 24 in position, as shown in Figure 1, and thereby prevent any lateral displacement of the beds l4 and It.
When the back rests 52 and 54 are pivoted upwardly they release-the headboards 22 and 24-. The beds I4 and [6 then can be pivoted towards each other, -as illustrated in Figure 2. Straps 69 and 62 are provided which can be grasped to assist in pivoting the beds. Strap 62 is shown resting "on the bed ['6 while strap 69 is illustrated as tucked under the mattress shelves 64 and fifi also operate to restrict the downward pivoting of theback rests 5-2 and 54 and are so positioned that they do not interiere with the pivoting of the beds 14 and it, nor of theheadboards 22 and 24..
Additional storage space is provided by the compartment formed byside walls- H and ill, the top 28 and headboards 22and' 24 when the beds are in the sofa-forming position, as illustrated in Figure 1. The top 20 also functions as a convenient table, adding to the attractiveness [and utility of the combination sofa and bed.
While the above description is of two units, it is frequently desirable to utilize a single combination sofa and bed. In this case, a headboard 25 can be removed and replaced with a side panel 88 to complete the compartment formed by'the side wall H, the top 20, the end wall iii and the headboard 22. The side wall l2 being replaced by end wall 10.
It is to be understood that various changes said bed about a vertical axis spaced from said 1 back rest; said back rest in the sofa-forming position having a portion engaging said headboard and dogging said headboard to prevent pivotal movement of said bed; said back rest, when pivoted upwardly about said horizontal axis, disengaging said headboard.
2. A combination sofa and bed as set forth in claim 1 in which said bed is provided with elongated floor-engaging support rollers.
3. A combination sofa and bed comprising: a frame comprising a side wall and a top piece; a headboard; a bed affixed to said headboard; a back rest mounted on said side wall for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis and adapted to overlie a portion of one side of said bed when said bed is in one position to form a sofa; said headboard being mounted on said top piece for .pivotal movement of said bed about a vertical axisspaced from said back rest; said back rest in the sofa-forming position having a portion engaging said headboard and dogging said headboard toprevent pivotal, movement of said bed; said back rest, when pivoted upwardly about said horizontal axis, disengaging said headboard; stop means mounted on said side wall of said-frame which restricts downward pivoting of said back rest; said stop means so positioned on said side wall that it does not interfere with the pivotal movement of said bed and said headboard.
4. A pair of combination sofas and beds comprising: a frame comprising two side walls and a top; a pair of headboards; a bed aflixed to each of said headboards; each of said headboards being mounted on said top piece for pivotal movement of the bed affixed to said headboard about a vertical axis; a back rest mounted on each of said side walls for pivotal movement around a horizontal axis and adapted to overlie a portion of one side of the bed adjacent said back rest when said beds are in position to form a pair of sofas; each of said back rests in the sofa-forming position having a portion engaging the adjacent headboard and dogging said headboard to prevent pivotal movement of said beds; said back rests, when pivoted upwardly about said horizontal axes disengaging said headboards; when said beds are in the sofa-forming positions the headboards are pivoted to form with said side walls and said top of said frame a storage compartment. v
5. A pair of combination sofas and beds as set forth in claim 4 in which each side wall is provided with stop means to restrict downward pivoting of said back rests; said stop means so positioned on the side walls so that said stop means do not interfere with the pivotal movement of said beds and said headboards.
6. A combination sofa and bed comprising: a frame comprising a side wall and a top piece; a headboard; a bed aifixed to said headboard; a back rest mounted on said side wall for pivotal movement about a horizontal axis and adapted to overlie a portion of one side of said bed when said bed is in one position to form a sofa; said headboard being mounted on said top piece for pivotal movement of said bed about a vertical axis; said back rest in the sofa-forming position having a portion engaging said headboard and dogging said headboard to prevent pivotal movement of said bed; said back rest, when pivoted upwardly about said horizontal axis. disengaging said headboard; stop means mounted on said side wall of said frame which restricts downward pivoting of said back rest; said stop means so positioned on said side wall that it does not interfere with the pivotal movement of said bed and said headboard.
