This invention relates-to a stationary twin bed sofa and it is' an objectof the invention to p vide an article-pf furniture of this kind which provides two luxuriously andcomfortable seating surfaces and which also'readilyprovides for two stationary and comfortable" cempiete' twin beds.
It isalso an object of the invention to provide an article of furniture of thiskind which permits inlts structure the use of a box spring orlatex cushions wherein the general assembly of: the furniture is such as to eliminate" the meet mov able parts that otherwise have a tendency to spoil the floor or floor covering.
A still further object of the invention is to provide an article of furniture of this kind wherein each of the beds is provided with head and foot and wherein the assembly is such as to allow the desired tucking in of the bed covers.
The invention also has for an object to provide an article of furniture of this kind which provides ample room between the beds for storage of bed clothes or the like and wherein the structure is also one which allows for the bed covers to readily drop over when making.
It is also to be pointed out as an object that the article of furniture as herein set forth is one which can be readily assembled or knocked down, thereby it is particularly advantageous for delivering the article through small doors or along narrow hallways.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination of the several parts of my improved stationary twin bed sofa whereby certain advantages are attained, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order that my invention may be better understood, I will now proceed to described the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a twin bed sofa constructed in accordance with an-embodiment of the invention and in assembly to be used as a sofa;
Figure 2 is a view in perspective showing the assembly of the article when it is to be used as twin beds;
Figure 3 is an enlarged fragmentary view in elevation illustrating in detail a means for mounting a movable back as herein embodied;
Figure 4 is a view in side elevation of an end member of the structure;
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary view partly Figure 6' is a'fra'grh'entaryjview inper'spectiv'e of the spring platform and" one of the supporting brackets carriedther'eby; s I
Figure 7 is a view in side elevation of thespring platform; and I 4 V I v F u e-' swimwe r: i or i t e be'rj and supportirig bracket mounted thereon In the embodime of the'inventioh as'h'erein illustrated intl'iea'ccompanying drawings; I denotes two elongated end members of desired di-' mensions and which are provided at their extremities and at a point intermediate the ends thereof with the supporting legs 2.
Interposed between and operatively supported by the end members I and adjacent to the lower portions thereof is the spring platform P. This platform P, as herein embodied, comprises a base 3 and a top 4, between which are positioned the suitably placed springs 5, which may be as desired. The marginal portions of the base 3 and top 4 have suitably secured thereto the side aprons 5 of flexible material whereby is produced a spring platform of a box top.
Each end of the base 3 of the platform P adjacent to the forward longitudinal margin thereof has fixed thereto an upstanding bracket 6 having its upper extremity provided with a reverted lug 1 which interlocks with the upstanding and substantially U shaped bracket 8, fixed to the inner face of an end member I.
The portion of each end of the base 3, has secured thereto an elongated plate 9 extending beyond the rear longitudinal edge of the base 3 and which extended portion is fixedly attached by screws or otherwise to the central portion of a side member I.
The intermediate legs of the side members I constitute a continuation of an upright II which extends a desired distance above the margins of the end members I and rigidly secured, as by screws or the like, to the upwardly extended portions of each of these uprights II, is a panel I2 of desired configuration but preferably having its side wall edges in downward divergence and its top edge substantially straight and of desired length. The applied panels l2 have their upper edges connected by an interposed top member I4 which extends entirely across the furniture to provide a top closure and of course to enhance the appearance of the article.
Hingedly connected as at I5 to each longitudinal marginal portion of the member I4 is a back in vertical section and partly in elevation illusboard It, which when it is in its lowermost osition, provides support for the back cushions l1. These cushions I1 are loose and are preferably three in number although this may be varied.
Placed upon the spring platform P is the cushion mattress M, tufted as at 18, to appear sectional. When the mattress M is applied, the inner ends thereof are in spaced relation whereby sufficient room is allowed for the tucking in of the bed clothes all around the bed when the furniture is being used as a twin bed.
The panel 12 and the top member l4 provide a storage space whereby any bed clothing when not in use may be readily placed and maintained in concealment when the doors or back board it are in lowered position, so that when not bein used as a bed, the article of furniture may be used with equal facility as a. twin sofa.
In view of the foregoing description, it is believed to be readily obvious that many advan tages are obtained by the use of the bed.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a stationary twin bedsofa constructed in accordance with my invention is particularly fell adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with, which it may be assembled and operated.
I claim:
1. A twin bed and sofa comprising end members, a spring platform interposed between and supported by the end members, supporting legs depending from the extremities of the end members and at a point substantially midway of the ends thereof, the intermediate legs being continued upwardly above the end members to provide upstanding standards, panels secured to the upstanding standards and. extending upwardly a desired distance from the upper edge of the end walls, a top member interposed between and connecting the upper end portions of the panels, back boards hingedly connected to the longitudinal margins of the top member, said back boards swinging downwardly to provide supports for back cushions or swinging upwardly to provide for convenient access within the space provided between the panels and connecting top member.
2. An article of furniture as set forth in claim wherein cushion mattresses are placed upon the platform between the side members, said mattresses being of a size to have the mattresses at one side of the furniture spaced from the mattresses at the upper side to provide an intervening space to permit effective tucking of the bed covers.
