3 Claims.
My invention has relation to improvements in benches and consists in the novel features of con" struction more fully set forth in the specication and pointed out in the claims.
The present invention is directed particularly to benches of knockdown construction whereby they may readily be shipped in sections and assembled where they are to be used.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a bench that is constructed in sections which are easily and quickly assembled; to provide a knockdown bench that when assembled forms a solid substantial construction; and one that may be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be better apparent from a detailed description thereof in Iconnection with the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan of my improved bench with parts broken away; Fig. 2 is an end elevation thereof with parts broken away; Fig. 3 is a combined front elevation and longitudinal section taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with parts broken away; Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional detail of the frame construction of seats and back; Fig. 4a is an inside elevation of the end of the base with the kick-plate that connects the ends shown in cross-section; Fig. 5 is an end elevation of a modied form of bench; and Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a portion of the modiecl form.
Referring to the drawings, my improved bench comprises a base B, oppositely disposed seats S,S, and a back C positioned between the seats S,S. The base B comprises end members I,I maintained in suitable spaced relation by kick- plates 2,2, each of which is secured to vertically disposed strips 3,3 on the cleats I',I secured on the inner surface of the end members I, as shown in Fig. 4a.
Each of the seats S embodies a suitable frame comprising a front rail 4, rear rail 5 and end rails 6,6 lwhich are covered with suitable upholstery 1 in any manner well-known in the art. The upholstery and cushioning of the seats forms no part of the present invention which is directed to the knockdown structure and manner of assembling the component parts.
In the present instance there are two seats S identically constructed, but if desired the invention is equally applicable to a single seat bench.
The back C of the bench comprises a box-like member having a bottom piece 8 and top piece 9 connected by end pieces I0,IIl, over which is disposed plywood sheeting II of form-fitting shape covered by suitable upholstery I2 to form the Cil back-rest of the bench. The end pieces I0 extend downwardly a considerable distance below the bottom piece 8 so that when the back C is itted to the base end members I,I the bottom B of the back Will rest on said members, and the extensions IB of the end members will it on the outside of the end members I,I as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In order to complete the assembly of the bench the seats S,S are also fitted to the base B and in this fitting operation the rear rail 5 of each seat will enter into an open slot s formed in the upper part of base end member I, while the front rail 4 of each seat will rest upon a forwardly projecting ledge I3 formed on each edge of the end member I.
In order to increase the rigidity of the bench when the respective components are assembled, the back C may be bolted or screwed to the base end members I, for which purpose holes o are provided in the extension I0 of the end pieces I0, and holes o in the end member l. The seats S may also be bolted to the base member I, for which purpose holes p are provided in end rails 6 of the seats and holes p in the base end member I.
In Figs. 5 and 6 I show a modified construction wherein the seats S,S and back C are supported by metallic side frame IB at each side of the bench. The back C is secured to the frame by means of bolts I5 and seats S' are secured to frame I 4 by means of bolts I6.
In either the main form of the modification (Figs. 5 and 6) the back and seats comprising my improved bench are easily and quickly assembled and held together by end members of a suitable base.
Having described my invention, I claim:
l. A bench comprising a base, a seat, and a back, said base having end members with top marginal recesses, the seat having front and rear sills in closely tting relation with said recesses, and the back having a bottom piece resting on the end members of the base and end pieces having lower extensions straddling the end membels1 of said base and in intimate relation therewl 2. A bench comprising a base, a seat, and a back, said base having end members with top marginal recesses, the seat having a frame comprising a front rail, a rear rail and end rails, said front and rear rails being disposed in the recesses of the base, the end rails of the seat straddling the end ymembers ofthe base, and the back having a bottom piece resting on the end members of the base and end pieces having lower eXtensions straddling the end members of said base and in intimate relation therewith.
3. A bench comprising a base, a seat, and a back, said base having end members with top marginal recesses and oppositely disposed kick 4plates removably secured between said end members, the seat having front and rear sills in closely tting relation with said recesses, and the back having a bottom piece resting on the end members of the base and end pieces having lower extensions straddling the end members of said base and in intimate relation therewith,
WILMOT H. SCO'IT.
