The present invention relates in general to sofa beds and, more particularly, to a sofa bed or sofa bed unit which includes a rectangular bed frame surmounted by a spring and a mattress and which includes a bolster or back rest capable of cooperating with the mattress to form a sofa, the back rest overlying the mattress along one side thereof and the remainder of the upper surface of the mattress serving as a seating surface.

*In general, the invention contemplates mounting the back rest on a wall, or other supporting means, in an elevation position and pivotally anchoring one corner of the bed frame relative to the fioor at a point spaced outwardly from the wall and substantially opposite one end of the back rest so that the bed frame may be swung from a position parallel to the wall, wherein one side of the mattress underlies the back rest, to a position at an angle to the wall, wherein the mattress is withdrawn from under the back rest, the unit serving as a sofa in the first position mentioned and as a bed in the second. The invention further contemplates utilizing the sofa bed of the invention in pairs adjacent a corner of a room, the back rests of the two sofa beds being mounted on the respective walls forming the corner of the room and the respective bed frames being pivotable from positions parallel to the respective walls, wherein one side of each mattress underlies the corersponding back rest, to positions wherein they are withdrawn from under the back rests, thetwo bed frames being disposed side-by-side and parallel to a line bi-secting the corner of the room under the latter conditions. The two sofa beds are spaced from the corner of the room with this arrangement, and the corner may be filled in with a table, or other article of furniture, or structure.

While, as previously stated, the present invention contemplates a dual sofa bed arrangement of the foregoing general nature, and while such an arrangement will be described herein as a matter of convenience in effecting a disclosure of the invention, it will be understood that the invention is not limited specifically thereto and that various features of the invention may be utilized in quite different environments.

A primary object of the invention is to provide a sofa bed having a generally vertical board which extends along the pivoted end of the bed frame and which is moveable upwardly and downwardly between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, such board being at a level below the back rest when in its retracted position so thatit swings out from under the back rest as the bed frame is swung outwardly away from the wall. This board is preferably at the head end of the bed frame and will be referred to hereinafter as a head board for convenience.

Another object is to provide means operable from the foot end of the bed frame for moving the head board between its extended and retracted positions.

A further object is to provide means for moving the head board between its extended and retracted positions which include a scissors linkage connected to the bed frame and to the head board and movable between open and closed positions to move the head board between its extended and retracted positions, respectively, such scissors linkage having connected thereto a rotatable shaft which is carried by the bed frame and which extends from the head end of the bed frame to the foot end thereof so that the shaft is capable of being rotated from the foot end of the bed frame to raise and lower the head board.

An object in connection with one embodiment of the invention is to provide the shaft mentioned with a handle at the foot end of the bed frame by means of which the shaft may be rotated to raise and lower the head board through the scissors linkage associated therewith, swinging movement of the handle to lower the head board also serving to pivot the bed frame away from the wall so as to withdraw it, and the retracted head board, from under the back rest, with a continuation of the motion required to lower the head board.

An object in connection with another embodiment of the invention is to provide the bed frame with a generally vertical foot board extending along the foot end thereof and mounted on the bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, the foot board also having associated therewith a scissors linkage which is connected to the foot board and the bed frame and which is conneoted to the shaft extending longitudinally of the bed frame, whereby the head board and the foot board are operatively interconnected.

A related object is to provide the head board and the foot board with opposed scissors linkages interconnected by the shaft mentioned so that when one of the boards is being lowered, the other is being raised, and vice versa. With this construction, the head board may be moved downwardly into its retracted position to permit swinging of the bed frame outwardly away from the wall by moving the foot board upwardly into its extended position, the head board being extended by retracting the foot board.

When either the head board or the foot board is in its retracted position, the top thereof is preferably flush with, or below, the upper surface of the mattress, this being necessary with respect to the head board in particular to cause it to clear the back rest as the bed frame is swung toward and away from the wall. When the unit is in use as a sofa, the head board and the are preferably in intermediate positions so that they serve as arms for the sofa, the provision of which structure is another object of the invention.

It will be noted that, with the foregoing interconnection between the head board and the foot board, each one counterbalances the other to facilitate raising and lowers ing of the boards as required, which is an important feature. An object in this connection is to make the head board slightly heavier than the foot board 50 that it automatically tends to remain in its retracted position, thereby insuring that it will not come into contact with the back rest in swinging the bed frame into or out of a sofa position next to the wall and partially under the back rest.

An important object of the invention is to provide each of the head and foot boards with a fabric sheet covering or upholsten'ng the outer side thereof and connected to such board at its upper end. The lower end of the fabric sheet is connected to a spring reel or roller which is carried by the bed frame and which tends to wind up the lower portion of the fabric sheet. Consequently, when the corresponding board is lowered into its retracted position, the excess length of the fabric sheet is automatically wound up on the reel and, when the board is raised into its extended position, the fabric sheet is automatically unwound from the roller. This construction automatically maintains the fabric sheet taut and provides a simple and convenient way of upholstering the cor--- responding board, which is an important feature.

Another object is to pivo-tally anchor each bed frame independently of any table, or other article of furniture,

foot board or structure which may be located in the corner of the room with which the sofa bed units are associated. Consequently, anything placed in the corner of the room is in no way operatively related to the sofa bed units, which is an important feature.

Another object of the invention is to provide various latches for holding the foot and/ or head boards in various positions, for holding the bed frames against the walls, and the like.

The foregoing objects, advantages, features and results of the present invention, together with various other objects, advantages, features and results thereof which will be evident to those skilled in the art in the light of this disclosure, may be attained with the exemplary embodiments of the invention described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Referring particularly to FIGS. 1 and 2 of the drawings, illustrated therein in fragmentary form are a floor and perpendicular walls 22 intersecting to form a corner 24. Disposed adjacent the corner 24 are two sofa bed units 26 each comprising a bed 28 and a back rest 3%, the back rests being suitably supported in elevated positions independently of the beds, as by mounting them on the walls 22, respectively, The space between the sofa bed units 26 and the corner 24 of the room may be filled in by any suitable stmcture, such as a table 32, or other article of furniture. 7

Each bed 28 includes a rectangular frame 34, FIG. 3, surmounted by a box spring 36 and a mattress 38 in the particular construction illustrated, the frame being equipped with rollers 40 by means of which the corresponding bed may be moved toward and away from the corresponding wall 22. When. the beds 28 are up against the walls 22, portions of the mattresses 33 underlie the backrests and the portions of the mattresses outwardly of the back rests provide seating surfaces, the back rests projecting outwardly from the walls 22 far enough to provide seating surfaces of appropriate width.

As best shown in FIGS. 3 and 4 of thedrawings, the frames 34 are provided with arms 42 pivotally connected to an anchoring means 44 on the floor 20 at a point spaced outwardly from the walls 22 and located substantially opposite the'ends of the back rests 30' nearest the corner 24. Thus, the beds 28 are pivotable or swingable toward and away from the walls 22 between sofa positions adjacent the walls and bed positions wherein the beds parallel a line bisecting the corner 24, as indicated in phantom in FIG. 2 of the drawings. The anchoring means 44 may be fastened to the floor 20, or it may merely have sufficient mass to provide a stable anchor for the beds 28 without fastening it to the floor. In any event, the anchoring means 44 is completely independent of the table 32, or other structure, in the corner 24 so that the sofa bed installation of the invention is not dependent on whatever structure may be in the corner of the room.

Each bed 28 includes a head board 50 of any suitable construction extending along that end of the bed which is adjacent the table 32. Each head board Si} is mounted on the corresponding frame 34, for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, the head board of the lefthand bed of FIG. 1 being shown in its retracted position and the head board of the right-hand bed being shown in its extended position. When each head board 59 is in its extended position, it is located between the table 32 and the adjacent end of the corresponding back rest 30 to prevent swinging movement of the corresponding bed 28 away from the corresponding wall 22. This action of the head board 5t? of each bed 28 may be supplemented by a gravity latch 52, FIG. 5, pivoted on the corresponding frame 34 at 3 and en ageable with a latch plate 56 connected to the door 23, for example. The corresponding head board 5% is provided with a lug 58 which engages the latch 52 to disengage the latch from the latch plate 56 when the head board is in its retracted position, whereupon the bed may be swung away from the wall. Upon movement of the head board 54} upwardly into its extended position, the lug 53 disengages the latch 52 to permit the latch to fall into engagement with the latch plate 56 in response to the action of gravity.

When the head board 56 of each bed 28 is in its retracted positoin, the top thereof is at or below the top of the corresponding mattress 33 and below the bottom of the corresponding back rest Consequently, when the head boards 59 are in their retracted positions, the beds may be swung outwardly away from the walls 22 into the bed positions shown in phantom in FIG. 2 of the drawings.

As best shown in FIGS. 3, 4 and 5, each head board 5% is guided for upward and downward movement between its extended and retracted positions by hollow rectangular tracks es on the corresponding frame 3% which receive therein rectangular members 62 connected to the head board. Extending between the tracks as is a bar 64 to which are pivotally connected the lower ends of two scissors linkages 66, the upper ends of these linkages being pivotally connected to a bar 68 carried by the head board 5%. As will be apparent, the scissors linkages 66 open and close, FIGS. 3 and 4, as the head board 56 is moved upwardly and downwardly. The intermediate pivot points of the two scissors linkages 65 are interconnected by a bar 7%} which converts the two scissors linkages into a parallelogram linkage insuring that the members 62 remain vertical at all times, thereby preventing binding of the members as in the tracks in? as the head board is raised and lowered.

Each head board is shown as provided with a latch plate 72 engageaole with an automatic latch 74 carried by one of the tracks 6%, the latch plate 72 being engageable with the automatic latch 72 in the extended position of the head board. Each automatic latch 74 is of the type which engages the latch plate 72 to support the head board 50 in its extended position when the head board is first moved upwardly into such position, but which re leases the latch plate '72 in response to slight upward movement of the head board beyond its extended position. Thus, when each head board 5% is raised into its extended position, the corresponding automatic latch 74 engages the corresponding latch plate 2 to support it in such position. In order to release the head board 50 for return to its retracted position, it is merely necessary to lift upwardly on the head board slightly to cause the automatic latch 74 to disengage the latch plate 72. Such antomatic latches are well known in the art and a detailed disclosure thereof herein is not necessary.

Referring to FIGS. 7 to 11 of the drawings, illustrated therein is a dual sofa bed installation which is similar to that illustrated in FIGS. 1 to 6, identical refer nce numerals being employed for corresponding components as a matter of convenience. In this embodiment, each bed 28 is provided with a foot board 89, as well as the head board 56), the foot board also being movable upwardly and downwardly between extended and retracted positions. As will be described hereinafter, the h ad board 54) and the foot board 86 of each bed 28 are interconnected in such a manner that as the head board moves upwardly, the foot board moves downwardly, and vice versa. Thus, when the head board is in its extended position, the foot board 86 is in its retracted position, and when the head board 56 is in its retracted position, the foot board as is in its extended position. Normally, the bed 28, when utilized for sleeping purposes, will have the head board 50 in its extended position and the foot board i i in its retracted position, although both may be intermediate positions with the tops thereof at the same level if desired. When each bed 28 is in use as a sofa and is inserted under the corresponding back rest 36, the head and foot boards 59 and 80 thereof may be disposed in intermediate positions with the tops there of at the same level to form arm rests, the head board of the left-hand bed of FIG. 8 of the drawings being shown in its intermediate, arm rest position.

Considering the manner in which each foot board 80 is mounted for upward and downward movement, it is provided with vertical rectangular members 54 slidable in hollow rectangular tracks 88 carried by the frame 34. The members 84 and the tracks 88 are similar to the members 62 and the tracks 69 described previously in connection with the head board 50.

The head board 50 of the embodiment of FIGS. 7 to 11 is actuated by two parallel scissors linkages 90 interconnected intermediate their ends by a bar 5 2 which converts these scissors linkages into a parallelogram linkage to insure straight-line vertical movement of the head board fit without tilting as the head board is raised and lowered in response to opening and closing movement of the scissors linkages. The scissors linkages 9t? and the bar 92 are similar to the scissors linkage 66 and the bar 68 of the embodiment of FIGS. 1 to 6 of the drawing, except that the scissors linkages 9t? are connected directly to the frame 34.

The foot board 80 is adapted to be raised and lowered by means of scissors linkages 94 interconnected inter mediate their ends by a bar 96 which converts the scissors linkages 94 into a parallelogram linkage also. The scissors linkages 94 are also pivotally connected directly to the frame 3 The scissors linkages 90 associated with the head board as and the scissors linkages 94 associated with the foot board 3b are opposed, i.e., oppositely oriented, and the lower end of one of the scissors linkages 90 is rigidly connected to the lower end of the opposite scissors linkage 94 by a rotatable shaft 98 mounted on the frame 32. With this construction, it will be apparent that the head and

50 and 80 move in opposite directions, the foot board being in its elevated position when the head board is in its lowered position to clear the corresponding back rest 35), and the foot board being in its lowered position when the head board is in its extended position.

An important feature of this interconnection is that the head and foot boards 5i) and 8t} counterbalance each other so that the desired vertical movement thereof may be eifected with a minhnum ofeifort. Preferably, the

8 head board 50 is slightly heavier than the foot board St) so that it will tend to drop into its lowered position auto matically to clear the corresponding back rest 30.

The invention provides means for latching the foot and head boards in their retracted positions, their intermediate or arm rest positions, and their extended positions. As shown in FIGS. 9 to 11, the frame 34 carries a member 109 at the foot end of the bed having thereon a latch element 102, which may be a roller. Tins roller is adapted to fit into notches 104, Mia? and 168 in a latch member 119 pivotally connected to the foot board at 112. The latch member 110 is biased in a direction to engage one of the notches 1M, we and 198 with the roller M2 by a spring 114, the latch member 11% being provided with a handle 116 for pivoting it away from the roller. When the roller 102 is disposed in the notch 1&4, it holds the foot board in its extended position and holds the head board 50 in its retracted position. When the roller 102; is in the intermediate notch ltlG, it holds both the boards 5d and 80 in their intermediate positions. With the roller 102 in the notch 16%, the head board 50 is locked in its extended position and the foot board 80 in its retracted position.

The foot board 8t}, as best shown in FIG. 7, is completely upholstered and the outer surface thereof is covered by a fabric sheet 118 having a slit 12d therein for access to the latch-member handle 116. A shroud 122 carried by the bed frame 3 lies outwardly of and overlaps the foot board 80 and houses the foot board, as shown in the portrayal of the right-hand bed of FIG. 8, when the foot board is in its retracted position. When the foot board 80 is extended, as shown in FIG. 7, the shroud 122 conceals the scissors linkages M, the frame 34, and the like.

As shown in FIG. 10 of the drawings, each bed 28 may be latched in its sofa position by means of a pivoted, hook-like latch element 124 carried by the frame 34 and engageable with a latch plate 126 secured to the floor 20, or the corresponding wall 22. A link 128 connects the latch element 124 to the foot board 80. Consequently, when the foot board is moved upwardly toward its ex tended position to retract the head board 30 through the shaft 98, the latch element 124 is automatically disengaged from the latch plate 126 to permit the corresponding bed 23 to be swung outwardly from its sofa position into its bed position.

Referring to FIG. 12 of the drawings, the bed 28 of this embodiment omits the foot board 86, but retains the shaft 98 connected to one of the scissors linkages associated with the head board 58. A handle 130 is connected to the shaft 98 at the foot end of the bed and extends toward the corresponding wall when the head board 50 is in its elevated position, the handle being swingable through an angle of about 90 into a generally vertical position to move the head board into its retracted position. With this construction, applying a head-board retracting force to the handle 130 results in moving it into an upright position, whereupon a continuation of the same force which was applied to the handle 13! to retract the head board 50 automatically results in swinging the bed 28 outwardly into its bed position. Thus, the head board 50 is retracted to clear the corresponding back rest 30 and the bed 28 is swung outwardly into its bed position with substantially a single motion of the handle 130, which is an important feature.

With the embodiment of FIG. 12, a latch similar to the latch 52 described previously may conveniently be used, this latch being disengaged automatically upon movement of the head board 56' into its retracted position, as previously described.

Referring to FIGS. 13 and 14 of the drawin s, the foot board St) is illustrated therein as having its outer surface covered by a fabric upholstery sheet 132 the lower end of which is connected to a spring reel or roller 134 of the window-shape type mounted on the frame 34, this reel or roller containing the usual spring means, not shown, for constantly biasing the reel or roller in a direction to wind the sheet 132 thereon. With this construction, as the foot board 80 is raised, the sheet 132 unwinds from the roller 134, and, as the foot board is lowered, the sheet is automatically wound up on the roller. Thus, this arrangement completely covers the interior structure of the foot board 80, the frame 34, and the like, thereby eliminating any necessity for the shroud 122 of the embodiment of FIGS. 7 to 11 of the drawings.

The term sofa is used generically herein to cover all articles of furniture similar to sofas, such as chairs, settees, chaise longues, and the like.

Although various exemplary embodiments of the invention have been disclosed herein, it will be understood that various changes, modifications and substitutions may be incorporated in such embodiments and that such embodiments may be utilized in whole or in part, all without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth in the claims which follow:

I claim:

1. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; a generally vertical board extending along one end of said bed frame; means mounting said board on said bed frame for movement between an upper, extended position and a lower retracted position; and means for moving said board between said extended and retracted positions, including a scissors linkage connected to said board and said bed frame and movable between open and closed positions to move said board between said extended and retracted positions, respectively, and including a shaft rotatably mounted on said bed frame and extending from said one end of said bed frame to the other end thereof, said shaft beingconnected to said scissors linkage.

2. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; a generally vertical board extending along one end of said bed frame; means mounting said board on said bed frame for movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means for moving said board between said extended and retracted positions, including a shaft rotatably mounted on said bed frame and extending from one end of said bed frame to the other end thereof.

3. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; generally vertical head and foot boards extending along the respective ends of said bed frame; means mounting each of said boards on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means interconnecting said boards for moving each upwardly in response to downward movement of the other and for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other.

4. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; generally vertical head and foot boards extending along the respective ends of said bed frame; means mounting each of said boards on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means interconnecting said boards for moving each upwardly in response to downward movement of the other and for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other, including a rotatable shaft carried by said bed frame and extending from one end thereof to the other, and including means connecting the ends of said shaft to said boards.

5. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; generally vertical head and foot boards extending along the respective ends of said bed frame; means mounting each of said boards on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and

scans interconnecting said boards for moving each-upwardly in response to downward movement of the other a and for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other, including two scissors linkages connected to said bed frame and respectively connected to said boards and movable between open and closed positions to move said boards between said extended and retracted positions, respectively, said interconnecting means further including a shaft rotatably mounted on said bed frame and connected to said scissors linkages.

6. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; a generally vertical board extending along one end of said bed frame; means mounting said board on said bed frame for movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means for moving said board between said extended and retracted positions, including a shaft rotatably mounted on said bed frame and extending from one end of said bed frame to the other end thereof, and including means connected to said shaft at said other end of said bed frame for rotating said shaft.

7. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a back rest; means supporting said back rest in an elevated position; a rectangular bed frame; means pivotally anchoring a corner of said bed frame formed by one end and one side thereof at a point spaced from said supporting means and substantially opposite one end of said back rest, whereby said bed frame is pivotable about a vertical axis through said point between a position wherein the other side of said bed frame is disposed under said back rest and a position wherein said other side of said bed frame is withdrawn from under said back rest; a generally vertical board extending along said one end of said bed frame; means mounting said board on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, the top of said board being below said back rest when said board is in said retracted position to provide for pivoting of said bed frame into said position wherein said other side of said bed frame is withdrawn from under said back rest; another generally vertical board extending along the other end of said bed frame; means mounting said other board on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means interconnecting said boards for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other and for moving each upwardly in response to downwardmovement of the other.

8. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a back rest; means supporting said back rest in an elevated position; a rectangular bed frame; means pivotally anchoring a corner of said bed frame formed by one end and one side thereof at a point spaced from said supporting means and substantially opposite one end of said back rest, whereby said bed frame is pivotable about a vertical axis through said point between a position wherein the other side of said bed frame is disposed under said back rest and a position wherein said other side of said bed frame is withdrawn from under said back rest; a generally vertical board extending along said one end of said bed frame; means mounting said board on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, the top of said board being below said back rest when said board is in said retracted position to provide for pivoting of said bed frame into said position wherein said other side of said bed frame is withdrawn from under said back rest; another generally vertical board extending along the other end of said bed frame; means mounting said other board on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means interconnecting said boards for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other and for moving each upwardly in response to downward movement of the other, said board at said one end of said bed frame being heavier than said other board.

9. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a rectangular bed frame; generally vertical head and foot boards extending along the respective ends of said bed frame; means mounting each of said boards on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; and means interconnecting said boards for moving each upwardly in response to downward movement of the other and for moving each downwardly in response to upward movement of the other, one of said boards being heavier than the other.

10. In a sofa bed, the combination of: a back rest; means supporting said back rest in an elevated position; a rectangular bed frame; means pivotally anchoring a corner of said bed frame formed by one end and one side thereof at a point spaced from said supporting means and substantially opposite one end of said back rest, whereby said bed frame is pivotable about a vertical axis through said point between a first position wherein the other side of said bed frame is disposed under said back rest and a second position wherein said other side of said bed frame is withdrawn from under said back rest; a generally vertical board extending along said one end of said bed frame; and means mounting said board on said bed frame for upward and downward movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position, a portion of said board substantially abutting said one end of said back rest when said bed frame is in said first position and said board is in said extended position, the top of said board being below said back rest when said board is in said retracted position so that said portion of said board is below said one end of said back rest to provide for pivoting of said bed frame into said second position.

11. A sofa bed according to claim 10, including: another generally vertical board extending along the other end of said bed frame; means mounting said other board on said bed frame for movement between an upper, extended position and a lower, retracted position; a fabric sheet covering the outer surface of said other board and having an upper end permanently connected to said other board; and a reel carried by said bed frame and extending along said other end thereof, the lower end of said fabric sheet being connected to said reel, whereby rotation of said reel in one direction upon downward movement of said other board toward its retracted position results in winding of the lower portion of said fabric sheet on said reel.

12. A sofa bed as defined in claim 11 including spring means for biasing said reel in said one direction,
