Description

Feb. 12, 19637 J. MAGUIRE SOFA BED AND TABLE UNIT INVENTOR. JOHN MA g A TT E Y United States Patent Ofitice Efiibfil? Patented Feb. 12, 1963 3,676,977 SSFA BED AND TABLE UNIT .lohn Maguire, Los Angeles, Caliii, assignnr, by rnesne assignments, to Dan-Bed Corporation, Los Angeles, Qalitl, a corporation of Delaware Filed Aug. l, 3365 Ser. No. 46,715 2 flattens. (Cl. --3) This invention relates to a sofa bed and table unit which is adapted to be placed in the corner of a room.
It is an object of my invention to provide a new and improved unit of the type described which is particularly adapted for use in a room having a limited amount of space.
It is a more particular object of my invention to provide such a unit which utilizes two beds which are narrower than a conventional twin bed so that they require less space, they more closely resemble a conventional sofa in their dimensions and appearance, they require a smaller bolster or backrest, and they permit the use of a smaller corner table. As a result, the dimensions of the unit are smaller, permitting its use in a room lacking sufiicient space to accommodate a conventional corner sofa bed unit.
While the individual beds are smaller than twin bed size, they can be combined at night to form a large or king size bed having a larger sleeping area than a conventional double bed.
It is a further object of my invention to provide such a unit in which the corner table is provided and the head portion of one of the beds is disposed beneath the table during the daytime and moved out at night. This arrangement reduces the amount of wall space which is required for the unit.
Another object of my invention is to provide a new and improved mechanism for sliding the bed back and forth beneath the table and for pivoting the bed away from the wall to permit changing of the bed coverings and cleaning beneath the bed. It is a more particular object of my invention to provide such a structure in which none of the track mechanism is attached to or disposed along the floor of the room. A further object of my invention is to provide such a mechanism which is simple and economical to construct and to operate and which is substantially foolproof in its construction and operation.
It is accordingly an object of my invention to provide a sofa bed and table unit having all of the advantages and benefits of the structure set forth above and described herein. My invention also comprises such other objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear and which are inherently possessed by my invention.
While I have shown in the accompanying drawings a preferred embodiment of my invention, it should be un derstood that the same is susceptible of modification and change without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Referring to the drawings, FIG. 1 is a top plan view of my sofa bed and table unit with both beds in their daytime positions;
PEG. 2 is a top plan view of my sofa bed and table unit with both beds in their nighttime positions;
PEG. 3 is an enlarged fragmentary sectional View taken on line 3-3 of FIG. 1;
FIG. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of FIG. 3;
FIG. 5 is an enlarged view of the lower left hand portion of PEG. 3;
FIG. 6 is a perspective view of the track structure alone with the table and bed omitted to clarify the showing.
A preferred embodiment which has been selected to illustrate my invention comprises a rectangular table l'tl, which is adapted to lit in the corner of a room. The corner of the table ltl which is disposed outwardly from the walls of the room is provided with an elongated piano hinge 12,, the other half of which is secured to the headboard 13 of a first bed 14. The first bed. 14 and headboard 13 close oil one side of the table ltl when the first bed 14 is in its daytime position.
A bolster 15 is pivotally secured to a backrest it; which extends longitudinally along the back edge of the first bed 14 adjacent to the wall of the room. The backrest 16 is secured at one end to the table 10. When the bolster 15 is in its downward position, it dogs against the headboard 13 and prevents any pivotal movement of the first bed 14. When the bolster 15 is pivoted to its upward position, in which it is disposed on top of the backrest 16, the headboard 13 is free and the first bed 14 can be pivoted on the hinge 12.
A second bed 18 is arranged so that its head portion is normally disposed beneath the table ltl. The second bed 1? has a headboard 19 which is slightly shorter than the top of the table lb so that the headboard 19 is free to pass beneath the table ll) as the head of the second bed 18 is moved to and from its position underlying the table iii. A loose bolster Eli is removably disposed tran versely across the second bed 1% adjacent to the table it) to conceal the gap between the table It? and the top of the second bed 13 when the second bed 18 is in its daytime position.
The rear portion of the bottom of the table ll) is pro vided with an angle iron 23 which extends transversely with respect to the second bed 18. A substantially U or channel-shaped track 22 is connected at its inner end to the angle iron 21. The track 22 extends longitudinally with respect to the second bed 18 and extends from the angle iron 21 to a point substantially beyond the front edge of the table 14?. The outer end of the track 22 is closed off by a semi-circular portion 23. An L-shaped bracket 24 supports the end of the track 2?. remote from the angle iron 21. The bracket 24 is connected to a panel 25 which comprises part of the structure of the table it}.
The second bed 18 is supported at its outer end by a pair of swivel casters 27 and at its inner end by a pair of elongated rollers 28. A pair of elongated guides 29 extend longitudinally adjacent one corner of the bottom of the second bed 13. The guides 29 are spaced apart from each other a distance slightly greater than the Width of the track 22. Mounted forwardly from the forward end of the guides 2% is a horizontally directed roller 30, which is mounted for free rotation with respect to the second bed 18.
The roller 39 fits within the track 22, while the guides 29 are disposed on both sides of the track 22. When the second bed 18 is in its daytime position, the roller 36 is disposed adjacent the inner end of the track 22 and the guides 29 are disposed in their entireties on opposite sides of the inner end of the track 22.
The second bed 18 is moved to its nighttime position by sliding longitudinal movement thereof to move it completely out from beneath the table ltl. During this movement, the guides 29 will engage the sides of the track 22 in the event of any undesirable lateral movement of the second bed 18 until it has been moved completely out from beneath the table til. Outward movement of the second bed 18 is limited by the semi-circular portion 23 of the track 22, which engages the roller 38.
After the second bed 18 has been moved completely out from beneath the table ill, the guides 29 are disposed outwardly beyond the semi-circular portion 23 of the track 22. The second bed 18 is thus free to be pivoted by lateral movement of the frame of the bed. The roller 30 fits Within the semi-circular portion 23 at the outer end of the track 22 to provide a pivot point for the second bed 13.
When the second bed 13 is to be moved back to its daytime position, the opposite movements take place.
a The bed must be properly aligned with the table before it can be moved beneath the table 10 and the guides 29 keep it in proper alignment during such movement.
The table 10 is rectangular rather than square, thus providing a closed panel 31 on the front of the table 10 adjacent to the second bed 13. This panel 31 can be used as a TV remote control panel, as a radio panel or for decoration. The width of the panel 31 corresponds to the distance which the first bed 14 and its headboard 13 protrude forwardly beyond the front edge of the table 10. When the first bed 14 is pivoted on the hinge 12 to a position transverse to its daytime position and adjacent to the second bed 18, the first bed 14 and its headboard 13 overlie the panel 31 and the headboards 13 and 19 are aligned to provide a complete headboard extending across the head of the large size bed formed by the beds 14 and 18. The beds 14 and 18 may also be used one at a time or both at the same time without moving them adjacent to each other.
I claim:
