July 8, 1952 HURST PIE CONTAINER Filed June :5, 1949 I i I 4 mm F IN VEN TOR.
v JOHN HURST ATTORNEYS Patented July 8,
;1: Clai as toholdthecover on tightly. V V
In';;on e form of mycontain'eijthe walls' of the box itself lying along the radiiof 'the sectorare cnrved'jnw'ardly slightly and hayea permanent set'in that'position. Then when the cover'of the container is placed in position, "it"presses the side w ls of the box outwardlyand'formjs a tight joint those'sides.
otherfjiorm of my invention f'provi walls or flanges on'the cover of the container lying along the radii of the sector curved inwardly with a permanent set. Then when the cover is placed on the box, the curved walls are cammed outwardly bythe sidewalls of the box forming a very tight joint along the sides of the container.
Other objects and advantagesvof my invention will be apparent from the drawings and the accompanying description and the essential features will be set forth in the appended claim.
In the drawings,
Fig. 1 shows a top plan view of the box portion of the container with the cover removed, with the side walls of the box shown in full lines in the position as formed, and shown in broken lines in the position to which they are finally forced when the cover is placed on the box;
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the container with the cover in place;
Fig. 3 is a fragmental sectional view taken along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the box portion of a I modification with the cover of the box removed;
Fig 3. It should en derstood'" that my contain'er is formed of a' 's'ubs'tantially rigid but flexiblematerial' such'as one of the well known plastics or'synthetic resins now on-the-market;
Sheet metal would have similar characteristics in agoodmany cases but this would be undesirable from the point of vi'ew'of" "food" contamination,
cleanliness, costandother factors;
A So that my-inventio may be clearlyunder f 11 stood Ijwill pointout that the-base orbox portion' of the contain'erjof Figs: 1 2 and 3' has a bottom wall I la which is truly sector-shape "except for the rounded corners at the-three apexes. Theside walls -I la. which extend upwardly'from l't the bottom wall -I la necessarily lie on the radii of the sector where they join the bottom-wall] lc, but upwardly therefrom the mid-portions of these side walls 1 la; are bent slightly'convex'inwardly in the direction of their length as shown 20 in Figs. 1 and 3 so as to take a permanent set in this position. Due to the flexibility of the material of which the container is made, these walls may be forced outwardly to the true sector position when the cover is in place. The end wall I lb of the box is formed on a' true are connecting the sides which lie on the radii of the sector. The cover ID is at all times trulysector-shape in plan except'for the rounded corners. A. downwardly extending flange [Ba extends entirely around the cover and spaced inwardly from its outer periphery by the widthof a slight shoulder 100 which is about the extent of the thickness of one of the walls Ila so thatthe side of the container when closed as shown in Fig. 3 is smooth.
The use of the container shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3 should now be apparent. The cover In is placed on the box I I preferably with the arcuate end wall lb of the cover in contact withthe or box part II has its side walls Ha curved arcua'te wall llb of the box. The cover is then moved downwardly preferably so that the sharp apex id of the cover approaches the sharp apex lid of the box. During this movement, the flanges Illa along the radial sides of the cover will cam the curved walls Ila along the sides of the box outwardly so that the parts reach the position of Fig. 3 in which the cover is held tightly on the box becauseof the squeezing action of the side walls Ila against the side flanges I00. of the cover.
In the form of my invention shown in Figs. 4, 5 and 6, the box portion'lz is always sectorshape in plan'execept for the slightly rounded corners. The radial sides are indicated at I2a connected by the end wall l2?) and the bottom wall is indicated at I20. The top cover member l3 has a top wall l3c which is truly sectorshape in plan save for the slight curvatures at the corners. Extending downwardly from this top wall is a peripheral flange whose side walls 1 Ha are curved inwardly intermediate their ends convex inwardly in the direction of their length as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 5 and shown in dot-dash lines in Fig. 6. An arcuate end flange 13b connects the two side flanges l3a.
The useloi the. device shown in Figs. 4. 5 and 6 should now" be apparent. In this io'rm of my device, the flange of the cover l3 fits outside of the walls of the box. The cover may be placed upon the box either by placing the end wall or flange [3b of the cover against the end ,wall I2b of the box and then bringing the apex 13d down toward the apex lid. Conversely, the apex |3d may be placed upon the apex PM and the box cover then pushed down until the end wall I2b of the box is covered by the end flange l3b of the cover. 12a. of the box earn the curved walls or flanges l3'a' of the cover from the dot-dash position of" Fig'l to the full line position shown there, whereupon the side walls of the'cover are held firmly on the box. The material of that form of my device shown in Flgs. 4, 5 and 61's or a generally rigid but flexible materialsuch asrone of the well known synthetic resins on the market whichwilltakefa permanent set in the positions'shown at 13a in Fig. -6 butwhich will easily becammed outwardly to the position shown in full lines at 1-3:; in Fig. 6 after which the cover will gr-ip the sides of the box tightly because of the permanent set of the material of which the cover'is made. What I claim is:
A container having box and top members, said box member having a sector shape bottom and In either case, the side walls with and in a direction to press against the associated telescoping radially extending walls of the other member and cammed into line therewith when said top member is placed on said box member, said radially extending walls of said one member extending in a smooth curve convex inwardly and said radially extending walls or the other member being substantially rectilinear.
