HANGER.

This invention relates to hangers, with particular reference to types engageable on containers to support implements used in connection with the contents of the containers.

Specifically, the device is adapted to" be attached to the wall of a metal can, such for instance as is used as a container for paints, varnishesV and like liquids, applied to surfaces by a-brush, and by which a brush may be held adjustably, either within or outside the can as preferred.

It is therefore one of the objects of the invention to provide a clip having opposed spring arms shaped to impinge on the side wall of a can to forcibly grip the same and having combined therewith a second pair of spring arms, disposed substantially at right angles, to the` first, said second arms being suited to supportingly engage between them 2o an object, such as a brush handle.

It is a further feature to so arrange the first mentioned clip arms in such manner. a's to permit reversal of their position relatlve to the can wall, thereby allowin the second arms to extend over the top o the can or away from it at will.

Another purpose is to provide a series of corrugations in the tool gripping arms whereby the shank or handle'of the salne may be held at a variable distance from the supportin wall.

A still urther aim is to provide a hanger of the designated type, inexpensive to construct, easy to apply and efficient in its operation.

These several objects are attained by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and shown inthe accompan ing drawing, forming a material part of t is disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of a hanger made in accordance with the invention.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the same, indicating its application.

In the drawing the numeral 5 designates the body of a common paint can, having a tight bottom 6 and inturned flange 7 at the top, after the cover has been removed, these elements, together with a conventional brush 8, provided with a handle 9, being shown in broken lines as not constituting part of the invention, but illustrating its use.

The device is composed of a narrow tapelike strip ofV resilient met-al shaped to producey a short level loop 1() from which extend arms 11 and 12, respectively inner and outer.

The outer arm 12 is inbent to form a projection 13, bowed outwardly, as at 14, to another inbent projection 15 and terminates in an angularly outstanding tang 16, and, as may be seen the projections 13 and 15 make contact with the exterior of the can.

The other arm 11 contacts with the interior of the can at 17, at a point below the projection 13, is then outturned, as at 18,.and again inbent at the point 19 to the can wall, below the projection 15, terminating in an inreaching tang 20. A`

Formed through the arms`11 and 12, adjacent the level top 10, are narrowrectangular slots 21 disposed in register longitudinally at the center of the strip.

-A second strip 22 of similar material is bent flat upon itself at its center to `pass through the slots 21, after which the bight of the bend is opened to produce an eye 23,' preventing retraction of the clip.

The extending portions of the strip 22are shaped arcuately, as at 24, these elements having extending arms, provided with a serles of opposed undulations 25, terminat- 111g 1n dlvergent prongs 26.

It will now be understood that theirst named clip .may be disposed as shown, with referencelto the wall of a can, in which position the undulating armed element reaches over the top of. the can and permits the reduced portion of a brush handle or similar object to be entered and engaged between any of concave portions of the undulations, in accordance with the size of the can or as may be referred, the same supporting the suspended implement eectively.

Should it be desired the clip may be raised. and readjusted on the can body 'to present the arms 25 extended outwardly, and, due to the arrangement of gripping elements on the clip, the structure is firmly held in any position in which it may be placed.

From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device for this purpose has been disclosed in the preferred form of its embodiment, but it is not desired to restrict the details to the exact construction shown, it 105,

being obvious that changes, not involving the exercise of invention, may be made without conflicting withthe scope of the appended claims. i

Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the class described comprising two strips of spring material, one of said strips being bent to present a slotted loop rovided with arms having opposed inreac ing elements to grip the wall of a can therebetween, the other strip having opposed undulations adapted to receive an article to be held therebetween and extending at a right angle from the first named strip, and means integral with the last named strip to secure it in the slots of the loop on the first named strip.

2. A device of the class described compri'sing two strips of spring material, one of said strips being doubled presenting opposed contact points to engage on the'side walls of a can, said points being oset one from anotherv and outturned at their lower ends, said strip having registering slots in its doubled portion, the second strip presenting a tightly folded portion to pass through the mentioned slots and means at Lenssen the extremity of said folded portiomto prevent retraction, said second strip presenting at its opposite ortion a holder containing recesses to receive an article entered therebetween.

3. A device of the class described comprising two strips of spring material, both being substantially U shaped, one having arms provided with inreaching abutments to grip the wall of a container when passed thereover and having centrally disposed transverse slots in the portion above the con.
