Description

Feb. 1, 1966 w, MaGDQNALD Q 3,231,919
PAINT BRUSH Filed Dec). 18, 1963 INVENTOR WINFRED A. Mac DONALD ATTORNEYS United States Patent 3,231,919 PAINT BRUSH Winfred A. MacDonald, Medford, Mass, assignor to Star Brush Manufacturing Co., Inc., Boston, Mass, a corporation of New York Filed Dec. 18, 1963, Ser. No. 331,609 1 Claim. (Cl. 15-174) The invention comprises a new and improved paint brush having a ferrule of thin sheet metal in which is outlined the contour of a flat hook that may be forcibly bent out of the ferrule by the user when he is ready to the outlined hook out from its flushposition in the plane of the ferrule. The brush may now be hung by the hook on either the inside or the outside of the paint pail between periods of actual use.
These and other features of the invention will be best understood and appreciated from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, selected for purposes of illustration and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of the brush showing the hook in flush position in the ferrule, and
FIG. 2 is a corresponding view showing the hook in its offset position.
The brush as manufactured and distributed to dealers is shown in FIG. 1. It comprises a handle and bristles 11 of conventional design. The bristles are enclosed within a tubular ferrule 12 of thin sheet steel or other metal. This of course conforms to the shape of the particular brush-in this case having a bristle mass two and one-half inches wide.
In stamping or dieing out the ferrule a hooked-shape tongue 13 is defined in the flat portion thereof by a slotted or perforated line 14 which outlines the side and end edges of the hook while leaving the metal of its base undisturbed. Preferably and as herein shown the side edges are somewhat reentrant or concave so that the hook has has a waist of reduced width, and an enlarged rounded 3,231,919 Patented Feb. 1, 1966 lCe the rest of the ferrule so that it may be engaged and pried out of its initial flush relation.
The ferrule 12 is formed with traverse corrugations 15 and 16 of which the upper corrugation 15 traverses the base of the hook 13 and defines a fold vertex upon which the hook may be bent out of the plane of the ferrule. These corrugations also stiffen the structure of the ferrule and act to some extent as barriers to the flow of paint toward the handle 10 when the brush is used for over head work.
The brush reaches the user in the condition shown in FIG. 1 whereupon by inserting a blade under the end of the end of the tongue 13 its side edges may he forcibly separated from the material of the ferrule and the tongue bent outwardly into the hook formation 13 shown in FIG. 2. The hook extends outwardly from its fold vertex at right angles and then downwardly thus providing a space for the reception of the rim of a paint can and a down-turned end portion for engaging either the inner or outer surface of the pail.
It will be apparent that the brush of this invention has the advantage of providing a book which is an integral pant of the conventional ferrule as distinguished from projecting hooks or clamps that must be attached to some part of the brush. Also, the outlined hook in its flush relation in the ferrule is an attractive feature from the sales point of view.
Having thus disclosed my invention and described in detail an illustrative embodiment thereof, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A paint brush having a ferrule of thin sheet metal conmeeting the handle and bristles thereof, said ferrule presenting .a substantially flat area having therein the scored outline of a tongue in the shape of a fiat hook lying flush in the ferrule, having a narrow waist and rounded head, and a rounded transverse corrugation in the ferrule defining a fold vertex about which the hook may be forcibly bent out of the plane of the ferrule, the end of the hook being free from connection with the rest of the ferrule so that it may be engaged and pried out of its initial flush relation in the flat area of the ferrule.
