UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HARVEY W. BURR, OF GLOVERSVILLE, NEW YORK.
GLOVE OR M ITTEN.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 259,513, dated June 20, 18852.
Application filed February 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY W. BURR, of Gloversville,'in the county of Fulton and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gloves and Mittens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to prevent ripping or tearing of the wristlets attached to gloves and mittens.
The invention consists in a tongue extendin g from the edge of the glove or mitten across the wristlet attached to this glove or mitten, ,whereby the glove or mitten can be pulled on without ripping or tearing the wristlet by ulling on the tongue instead of on the wristet.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a mitten provided with my improvement, the tongue being made integral with the glove. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a mitten provided with my improvement, the tongue being sewed to the glove.
A wristlet, A, made of knitted fabric or some other similar suitable flexible material, is attached to the lower edge of a glove or mitten, B. These wristlets are very apt to be ripped and torn, or to be ripped from the glove or mitten in pulling on the glove or mitten. To prevent this a tongue, 0, projecting from the lower edge of the palm of theglove or mitten, is sewed or otherwise attached to this wristlet, either on the outer or inner surface of the same, or within the thickness of the same. In reversible gloves or mittens-that is, mittens that can be worn on either hand-a tongue, 0, must be provided on each side. This tongue can be made integral with the glove or mitten, as shown in Fig. 1, or can be made of a sepa* rate piece sewed or otherwise fastened to the edge of the glove or mitten, as shown in Fig. 2. This tongue (shown in Fig. 2)can be made of the same material as the glove, or of a different material. In pulling on the glove or mitten, the tongue 0 is seized and receives all the strain, whereby the \vristlet will not be strained and is thus protected from being ripped or torn, or ripped from the glove or mitten.
The tongue 0 need not extend entirely across the wristlet, but must be of such length that it can be seized conveniently in pulling on the glove or mitten.
- I am aware that the wristlet of a mitten has been combined with a palm of leather or strong material, to which is sewed a transverse flap which can be used to take the strain after the glove has been partially drawn on; but by extending a tongue from the rear of palm to, or nearly to, the rear edge of the wristlet and sew ing it down to the wristlet the wearer of the glove naturally and almost necessarily takes hold of the tongue assoon as he attempts to put on the glove, thus throwing the strain of the pull on the tongue from the commencement to the end of its putting-on.
What I claim as new and of my invention 1s-- A wristlet glove or mitten provided with a tongue, 0, extending from the. middle of the rear edge of the palm to, or nearly to, the rear edge of the wristlet and sewed down to the latter, as and for the purpose specified.
