Description

' (No Model.) I
"-J. DARMODY.
RIPPING AND STITCH PIGKING TOOL. No. 593,461. Patented Nov. 9,1897.
WITNESSES: /N VENTOH 144%. By w- A TTOHNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMEs DARMODY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y'.
RIPPING AND STITCH-PICKING TOOL;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,461, dated November 9, 1897. Application filed March 80, 1897. Serial No. 629,909. (No modeli) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES DARMODY, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Ripping and Stitch-Picking Tool, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to devices for ripping stitched seams and for taking the cut threads or bastings from the cloth; and the object is to provide a combined tool for these purposes that will be comparatively inexpensive and yet strong and convenient to handle.
I will describe a ripping and stitch-picking tool embodying my invention, and then point out the novel features in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference inclicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a ripping and stitch-picking tool embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a side view thereof, showing a sheath in position over the ripping portion; and Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
The tool comprises a body portion 1 of suitable materialsuch, for instance, as steeland one end of this body portion is provided with a cuttingblade 2, which extends longitudinally of the tool and is'beveled on both sides, as indicated in Fig. 3. This cutting edge or portion 2 is preferably curved longitudinally, so as to substantially form a hook.
The end of the body portion 1 is provided with a transverse cutting edge 3, which it may be convenient at certain times to use for cutting the stitches of a seam+for instance, in places which cannot be conveniently reached by the cutting-edged tool. The opposite end of the body portion 1 is provided with a pointed hook 4, designed for picking out the cut threads from a garment or other article after the seams shall have been ripped.
When using the hook portion 4 for picking out stitches or bastings, it is necessary to cover the cutting portion of the tool, so that no injury may result to a persons hand. For this purpose I have provided a shield, of metal, designed to slip over the end of the tool and cover the cutting portions.
The use and operation of this tool is quite obvious, and therefore a detailed description thereof need not be given.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent--- A ripping and stitch-picking tool, comprising a body portion having a longitudinallycu-rved cutting edge at one end and also a transverse cutting edge at the same end, and
a stitch-pickin g hook at its opposite end, substantially as specified.
JAMES DARMODY.
