SHANK-LASTlNGi APPARATUS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 259,082, dated June 6, 1882, Application filed February 20, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern 4 Be it known that I, FRANK BEYERLE, of North Branch, in the county of Sullivan and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Shank-Laster for Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to facilitate lasting of the shanks of boots and shoes.
The invention consists of two clamps adapted to grasp and hold the edges of the shanks, combined with an apertured sliding plate and a'screw for pressing the plate through the openings of which the clamps are passed toward the grasping ends of the clamps, whereby the grasping ends of the clamps are moved toward each other and the shanks are tightly stretched on the last.
The invention also consists in details ofconstruction, as will be fully described hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which alongitudinal perspective view ot'iny improved shank-laster. is shown, parts being in section, and the manner of using theimplement being shown.
The leather-clamps A are each composed of a fixed jaw-arm, B, and movable jaw-arm O,
of both jaws being serrated or roughened on the inner surface. The fixed jaw-arm B is extended beyond the pivot, or provided with an elongation, D, which has an angularprojection, bend, or flange, E, at the end, and the pivoted jaw-arm O is extended only a short distance beyond the pivot, and this end of the jaw-arm O is provided with a longitudinal slot, through which a curved screw-bolt, F, passes, which screw-bolt passes through the jaw-arm B and is attached to the same. A winged nut, G, is screwed on the outer end. of the screwbolt F. A spiral spring, H, is coiled around the screw*bolt F, and presses the lower end (as shown) of the pivoted jaw-arm G from the jawarm B. The operation is as follows: The edges of the shanks Q are grasped by means of the clamps A, and are firmly held between" the serrated or roughened surfaces of the jaws by screwing the nuts G down tightly. The elongationsDof the jaw-arms B are passed through the openings K of the plate J in such a manner that these elongations will be inclined toward each other, theouter surfaces of the elongations resting against the beveled edges of the openings K, as shown. The end of the screw M is placed into the recess L, and the nut Ois held against the inner surfaces of the projections E, the recessed edges of which rest against the screwM. The screw is then turned, and thereby presses the plate J in the direction of the arrow a, whereby the grasping endsof the clamps which firmly hold the shanks Q the leather will be forced toward each other, andthe as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.
