UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE ALFRED BEARD, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION formingp art of Letters Patent No. 232,923, dated October 5, 1880.
Application filed August 7, 1880.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALFRED BEARD, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Vrench, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide an inexpensive and effective wrench adapted for both pipes and nuts.
The invention consists of a wrench having a circular, or nearly circular, eye in its head for the reception of a pipe or nut, which head is traversed by a slot, through which an adjustable tapering toothed key is entered to any desired extent to press upon and hold said pipe or nut.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal side elevation of the device, holding a piece of pipe. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal rear elevation of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the head of the wrench adapted for application to nuts. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the device adapted for use as a pipe-vise.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
In the drawings, A represents the head of the wrench, provided with an eye, A, and B the handle thereof, that may be screw-tapped into said head A, or otherwise secured thereto.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 5 the device is shown as adapted for operation on pipe, and therein the said head A is represented. as being constructed in two parts, of which a is the fixed or lower portion, and b the upper semicircular portion, hinged or bolted at its ends, as shown at c c, to the horns (l d of the part a, so that it may be thrown open, as shown in dotted lines at A, for the purpose of grasping a pipe, and provided with a transverse slot, f, through which slot f the tapering toothed key 0 passed with its teeth downward, that they may engage upon the pipe D and press and hold said pipe D firmly down in the eye A, as shown in Fig. 1. In all instances the key 0 is to be forced into the slot (N0 model.)
far enough to hold the pipe or other object with sufficient firmness in the eye A; and if necessary to adapt a larger wrench to a small pipe, a curved block may be placed in the bottom of the eye A to raise the pipe or other object, or a liner may be inserted over the key 0 to press it farther down.
The key 0 may be held in place, if necessary, by a setscrew, g, as shown in Fig. 5, wherein D represents a block on which the wrench A is secured as a vise by bolts h h. When this wrench is applied to a pipe or other object to be turned in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 1, the key 0 is entered through the eye A, as therein shown, and if the wrench is to be turned in the opposite direction the key 0 will be entered from the opposite side, so that its teeth shall properly engage in said object, and so that movement of the wrench shall cause the said key 0 to bite or take hold more firmly. V
In Figs. 3 and at the head A of the wrench is made in one piece, being designed for nuts and other objects that can be readily seized without throwing the top of the head A open, and the tapering toothed key 0 is driven or inserted in the slot f, that is preferably formed in the lower portion of said head A. This wrench-head A being set over and on a nut or stud, and the key 0 being properly tightened, an ordinary wrench may be applied, as indicated in dotted lines at E, Fig. 4, to serve as a handle by which to turn said head A.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 7 Patent- The head A, having eye A, fixed part a, and the curved portion b, the latter hinged to part a and slotted, as described, in combination with a serrated key, as shown and described.
ALFRED BEARD.
