UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIC.
' ROSVELL F. COOK, OF ILION, NEV YORK.
WRENCH.
SFECEFECATON forming part of Letters Patent No. 325,503, dated September 1, 1885.
Application filed June 16, 1885. (No model.)
T0 @ZZ whom, may col/werf.
Beit known that I, RoswnLL F. Coon, a citizen of the United States, andaresident of Ilion, in the county of Herkimer and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of theinvention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure lis a perspective view of rny improved wrench, showing it applied to a headed ooit. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a crosssect-ion on line .r x, Fig. 2.
Similar lett-ers of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
My invention has relation to wrenches; and it consists in the improved construction and combination of parts of a Wrench having means for retaining the nut or the head of the bolt, making a wrench particularly adapted to be used for carriages or other vehicles, where a nut or bolt is removed and again put in place after the parts have been oiled or adjusted, as hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A indicates the head of the wrench, which has the recess or aperture B, for iitting upon the nut or bolthead, and C is the handle, which projects from the head, the said head projecting out to form a iange or enlargement of a greater thickness or width than the handle.
The handle has a longitudinal slot, D, near the head, which slot is extended upon the outer side ofthe handle and head to forni a recess, E, which again is extended to form a groove or recess, F, upon the inner side of the aperture in the head.
A lever, G, consisting of a head-piece, H, bent at right angle, and a handle, I, curved out from the head-piece, is pivoted at its lbend upon a bolt, J, passing transversely through the head of the wrench and through the bend of the'lever G, which I will terni the clamping-lever, andthe free portion of.
the said lever rests and fits in therecess in the aperture in the head, while the handle projects out from and extends parallel with the handle of the wrench.
A dat spring, K, is secured upon the outer side of the handle and bears with its free end against the inner end of theV bent head-piece ofthe clamping-lever, pressing against the outer side of the same, forcing the portion of the bent head ofthe said lever which rests in the recess in the aperture in the head of the wrench to project slightly into the said aperture.
It will now be seen that when the wrench is to be used the free bent end of the claniping-lever may be forced into its recess by pressing upon the handle of the lever, thus allowing the head of the wrench to be tted upon a nut or bolt'head, and the said end will be forced by the spring to bear against the side of the said nut or bolt-head, so as to clamp the same, thus enabling the nut or bolt to be removed with the wrench, and causing it to remain clamped in the sa nie nntil released by pressing inward upon the lever-handle.
I am aware that it is not new to construct Wrenches provided with a clamping device for retaining the nut within the wrench-head after it is removed, and I do not claim such construction, broadly; but I am not aware that such wrenches have ever been constructed with a pivoted lever, one end of which engages with the nut, and the otherend is adapted to be operated by the hand of the operator; therefore,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United Statesm The combination of a wrench having a longitudinal slotin its handle near its head, and having a recess in its outer side forming a continuation of the slot, and havingagroove or recess in the side of the aperture in the head at a right angle to the groove and slot, a lever having a rectangularly-bent head portion pivoted at its bend in the rectangular recess, and having a handle projecting through the slot in the wrench handle extending parallel With the Wrench-handle, and a iiat .2 szeso spring secured at one end to the outer side my oWnIhave hereunto affixed my signature of the wrench-handle, and bearing with its in presence of two Witnesses. free end against the inner end of the rectangularlybent head portion of the clamp- ROSWELL F' COOK' ing-lever, as and for the purpose shown and Witnesses:
. set forth.
v F. W. VVILLs, n testimony that claim the foregoing as WM. RULIsoN.
