JAMES CAMPER, or sAeUAoHE, COLORADO.
SPITTOON -HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,370, dated May 23, 1882. Application filed February 14, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES CAMPER, of
of Colorado, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Spittoon-Holders, of which the following is afull, clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to that class of spittoon-holders in which the spittoon is inclosed in a box or case provided with a hinged lid and means for opening and closing it.
The invention consists in the combination, with a spittoon box or case having a hinged lid, of aplate or arm attached to said lid and a vertical rod working in a tube or hollow standard attached to the box or case, and provided at its lower end with a lateral fork for engageand lower the lid. I
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding partsin both the figures.
Figure 1 is aperspective view of myimproveinent, showing the lid closed; and Fig. 2 is a vertical section, showing the lid raised.
The box or case A may be of any suitable form and dimensions. It is here shown as of rectangular oblong form, provided with feet a, and carrying a pan, 0, serving as the spittoon.
The lid Bis hinged to the top of the box near one end, covering only a portion of the top. The remaining portion, 12, is permanent.
To the hinged edge of the lid, midway between the hinges, is attached a plate or arm, D, extending rearward.
To the permanent portion 11- of the top of the box is attached a tube or hollow standard, E,in which works a rod, G,provided at its upper end with a handle or knob, 9. At its lower end is a fork, consisting of two branches or arms, lrh extending toward the front of the I box, with the plate or arm D between them.
When the rod G is pressed downward the up- 5 13-. If the lid does not risebeyond a vertical linc,it willfall of its own weight as soon as pressure is removed from the rod Gr but if the lid passes beyond a vertical line, so as to rest against the tube E, it remains in such position until the rod G is pulled upward, whereupon the arm D is engaged by the lower branch,h of the fork, which pulls on it, so as to lower the lid.
The fork may be either made in one piece with the rod or attached to it in any suitable manner.
If desired, the lid B may be lined with sheet metal,in order to prevent injury by fire in case a lighted cigar should be thrown into the box.
I am aware that the hinged cover of a box or case containing a spit-toon has been operated by a jointed rod working in a vertical standard attached to the said box or case, the said rod being connected at its lower end to an arm secured to the cover, and I therefore do not claim such; but
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a spittoon-holder, the combination, with the box or case A, the hinged cover. B, provided with the rigid arm D, and the vertical hollow standard E, of the sliding rod G, provided with the knob g at its upper end, and at its lower end with a lateral fork, consisting of the arms h k adapted to engage alternately with the arm of the cover for raising and lowering the same, substantially as herein shown J AMES CAMPER.
and described.
