- W. A. OBER 8: J. YAGERLENNER.
SPRING BED BOT-TOM.
No. 258,249. Patented May 23, 1882.

UNITED STATES WILLIAM A. OBER AND JOHN YAGERLENNER, OF NINE MILE, INDIANA SAID OBER ASSIGNOR TO SAID YAGERLENNER.
PATENT OFFICE. Y
SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 258,249, dated May 23, 1882. Application filed April 11, 1882. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM A. OBER and J OHN YAGERLENNER, of Nine Mile, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottoms; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Figure l is a top plan of our improved spring bed-bottom. Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view, of a pair of the springs detached.
Corresponding parts in' the several figures are denoted by like letters of reference.
This invention relates to spring bcd-bottoms; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction of the same, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings hereto annexed, A represents the frame, which consists of transverse slats 13, mounted upon and connected by longitudinal side slats, G O.
D D are the springs, which are formed in pairs or twin springs, each set or pair from a single piece of wire, the central portion of which forms a bridge-piece, E, connectingthe upper coils of the pair of springs, as shown, and forming sharp angles F with the ends of said upper coils. The coils are to be attached to the slats B in any suitable manner.
In operation the springs are to be arranged substantially as shown in the drawings, by reference to which it will be seen that each spring is to have its upper coil adjusted in the loop or angle F, formed by the intersection of the top 'coiland the bridge-piece ofthe adjoining set, thus interlacing and connecting the entire set of springs without the use of separate fastenin gs. At the corners and other places where odd or single springs are necessarily used, such springs may have their upper coils interlaced with and hooked onto those of the adjoining springs, as shown. Likewise may the springs at the sides of the bed-bottom have their upper coils connected by links G.
H H are staples secured at the ends of the slats B, and I I are wires connecting said staples with the middle coil of each spring at the side of the bed-bottom, said wires being laced through the entire set of staples and springs on each side. In this manner the springs are held stiff or upright and prevented from swaying, while at the same time, the wires I being continuous on each side, the elasticity of the bed is completely retained.
Having thus described our invention, we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States- In a spring'bed-bottom, the combination of the frame A, having slats B, provided at their ends with staples H, the springs D, arranged and interlaced, substantially as described, and the wires I, connecting the staples H with the .middle coils of the springs at the sides of the bed-bottom through which they are continuously laced, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we have hereto aflixed our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM A. OBER. JOHN YAGERLENNER.
