(No Model.)
' W. T. TOWNES.
Bed Spring.
No. 239,575. Patented March 29,1881.
N, PETERS, PHOTO-LITHO UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM T. TOWNES, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
BED-SPRING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 239,575, dated March 29, 1881.
Application filed February 16, 1881. (N0 model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM '1. formats, of Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Springs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the and it consists in the combination of a pair of double springs in such manner as to form a group of four springs, which are connected dctachably by a loop or eye formed upon the connecting-wire of. one of the pair of springs and sprung upon the connecting-wire of the other pair, as hereinafter more fully set forth, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, A A denote the two springs of one pair, and B B those of the other pair. The spring-wire is continued across from one spring to the other, as shown at a and b, respectively, forming a straight connecting-piece, which, if continued across the respective springs, would pass through the center of the upper coil or round of each spring, as clearly shown in the dra ings. The connecting-piece b of the pair B is twisted to form a loop or eye, 0. To form the group or set of springs the connectingwire a of the other pair, A A, is slipped into this loop sidewise, and by then twisting the springs so as to bring the parts a b at right angles to each other they will be interlocked, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the connecting-wire a passing through loop 0.
I prefer to make each of the individual springs with a spring-key, D, atit-slower end,
by means of which it may be sprung upon the slats in a simple and well-understood way; but other fastening devices may be employed, if desired, the choice of fastening depending in a measure upon the purposes for which the springs are to be used. In this manner a group of four springs is formed, which mutually support each other, the two pairs which constitute each group being rcadil y connected or disconnected at will.
I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States The combination of onepa-ir ofcoiled springs, A A, connected by, the straight wire a, and another pair, B B, connected by the wire b, having loop 0, the several springs A A B B being interlockedand provided with keys Dor equivalent fasteniu g devices, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM T. TO WNES.
