Description
J. BOWEN. Bed-Bottom- No. 226,026 Patented Mar. so, I880.
(NVENTOB 2% WlfiNESSES MW) 4 ATTbRNEYS rLPiTEflS. FHOTaLJTHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C
NITED STATES JESSE BOWEN, OF LANCASTER, OHIO.
BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 226,026, dated March 30, 1880.
Application filed September 9, 1879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J EssE BOWEN, of Lancaster, in the county of Fairiield, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Inlprovements in Bed-Bottoms; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention relates to bedbottoms; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of devices, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view, and Fig. 2' a longitudinal vertical section, of my invention. Fig. 3is a detailed view of a part thereof.
A represents a bedstead, provided near each end with a cross-bar, B, which has a narrow rib, a, on top, extending the entire length. Upon these the bed-slats G G are laid, and held from any lateral movement by means of upward-projecting pins b passing through slots 0/; in the slats. The ends of the slats G are passed under other cross-bars, D, at the ends of the bedstead.
- Each slatC has on its under side two bridges, I I, as shown, and near each end of the slat is, by a staple, e, or its equivalent, connected a rod, (7, which extends inward to the lower end of the corresponding bridge I. At this point the rod 61 connects with a double hook, h, around which is placed a spiral spring, i. Another double hook, h, is also passed in opposite direction through the spring 2', and the two double hooks h h are connected by a rod, f, thus forming a spring-connection between the extremities of the slat under the bridges.
It will readily be seen that the heavier the person is the more resistance the springs will give, and take-up nuts or similar devices are provided for regulating the tension of the springs.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a bed-bottom, a series of slats having their ends placed over cross-bars B, and held down by cross-bars D, and each slat provided with bridges I, rods 6?, double books h h, springs 2', central connectin g-rod, f, and devices for regulating the tension of the springs, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 16th day of August, 1879.
JESSE BOWEN. Witnesses:
EMANUEL GEIL, D. K. SCHAFFER.
