UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM I. WINNE, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN SPRING BED-BOTTOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.- 17S,0 38,"dated May 30, 1876 application filed February 2, 1876.
To all w/w'm it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L'WINNE, of the city and county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Spring Bed'Bottom, of which the following is had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical section at the line as .10,- Fig. 2, a detached plan view of one of the springs, bent lever, and bracket; and Fig. 3,
My invention relates to the class of spring bed-bottoms carrying their beds upon slats supported by springs; and it consists in the combination of devices constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner herein described. As shown in the -drawing, A is' the framework which carries the several parts of my invention B, rods of metal or wood, attached to the frame A by means of the eyes b; 0 loops of wire, made in the form shown in the drawing, projecting from the rods B, around which the wire is coiled to form the springs 0, which are supported by the rods. After forming these springs the ends of the wire are bent downward and secured in the frame A. '1), bent levers, provided with a head, d having a slotted opening formed therein, to catch upon the bars B. At the outer angle of thebend of the lever a notch" or shoulder, 01 is made to receive. the cross-bar of the loop 0 upon which this part of the bent levers rest. Their upper extremities are provided with a crosspin, d passing through the slotted openings 0 of the brackets E, which are secured to the slats F at or near each end thereof.
Upon the application of weight to the slats F its pressure is transmitted through the bent levers D (which rock upon the bars B) and loops 0 to the springs C, causing them to coil more closely around the bars B, so as to resist the torsional strain thrown upon them. By the downward movement of the bent levers their upper extremities are carried closer toward each other, and to allow for this movement the slotted opening e in the brackets E are made.
To facilitate the removal of the slats from the springs for cleansing or any other purpose I preferably construct one of the bent levers of the pair attached to each slat with a lever, .G, which is placed in a recess formed in the body of the bent lever over the shoulder (1 When this lever is forced downward, so as to carry the loop 0 below the shoulder, the force of the springs throws the bent lever out of its place, after which the opposite end can be removed from its place without trouble. 1
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the slats F, bent levers D, and slotted brackets E, with the springs 0, provided with the loops c and bars B, as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the bent lever D with the lever G, as and for the purpose specified.
