llVlPROVEMENT IN FIRE-ESCAPE AND SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 194,153, dated August 14, 1877; application filed J uue 30,1877.
and 4 are detail views of a modification of parts of the device.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invent-ion consists in the combination of a number of spring sections and bars with two ropes, the sections forming a bed-bottom when placed in a bedstead adapted to receive them, and in case of fire form an escape that may be instantly adjusted for use.
1n the drawing, A A are spring-sections, composed of the bars I) c,rods d, and springs e. The rods 01 project from the face of the bar b, and extend through holes in the bar 0, and upon the said rods, between the bars b c, the springs c are placed.
Holes are made in the ends of the harsh c to receive ropes or chains f, and between the sections bars g are attached to the ropes f.
The bedstead in which this device is placed is provided with slats h, in which holes are made to receive the projecting ends of the rods (1. These slats run transversely in the bedstead, and below them there is a floor or bottom, B, which supports the bars and rope intervening between the sections. Above the rope and bars, between the sections, a thin board or pasteboard covering, i, is placed for excluding dust and dirt. Upon the sections A a frame, 0, composed of longitudinal bars k and transverse bars 1, is placed. Pins on project downward from the longitudinal bars It on each side of the bars b, for supporting and steadying the sections A.
The mattress is supported by the frame 0 and the bars b. One end of each rope is attached to a short section of chain, a, that exand is supported on a hook, 0, at the foot of the bedstead when not in use.
In Figs. 3 and 4 a modified form of bar for supporting the sections is shown. it consists of a bar, 12, having formed upon it bosses or projections for supporting the spring-sections.
These bars are arranged longitudinally in thebedstead, andthe ropes that pass through the I sections lie outside the said bars.
When it is desired to use the fire-escape the frame 0 is removed and the end that is attached to the hook o is removed and carried to the window and thrown out.
The sections A come out of the bedstead readily, and when the whole is out of the window descent may be readily made, as it forms a strong and complete ladder.
Having thus fully described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A bed-bottom composed of spring-sections and intermediate bars attached to ropes, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
2. The sections A, consisting of the bars I) c, rods (1, and springs c, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination of the spring-sections A and ropes f with a bedstead having transverse slats h, substantially as shown and described.
4. The frame 0, composed of slats or bars 70 l, and provided with pins m, in combination with the sections A, substantially as shown and described.
5. The bar D and chain a, in combination with the bedstead for receiving the end of the ropes f, substantially as specified.
JOSEPH KEDLNER.
