Description
E. PARKER.
Wire Mattresses.
Patented lVlay 20,1873.
, I yn/wwf f1 AM pHoro-umnGHAFmc ca N x (ossan/ves mms3) NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMERY PARKER, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE MATTRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 139,077, dated May 20, 1873 application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom t't may concern:
Be it known that I, EMERY PARKER, of New Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Improvement in Spring Bed-Bottoms 5 and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawing constitutes part of this specification, and represents atop view of a portion of a bed-bottom.
This invention relates to an improvement in spring bed-bottoms, with special reference to that class in which the bottom is formed of a net-work of wire 5 and the invention consists, irst, in forming the net-work or web from a series of triangular links, as more fully hereinafter described; second, in a spring for bedbottoins formed from two loops of elastic wire, the arms of each loop crossing each other and attached to the arms ofthe other loop, as more fully hereinafter described. y
The links from which the bed-bottom is formed are tri-an guiar, the one, A, formed with two arms, a a., bent so as to form the base B of a triangle, and, preferably, so as to form an eye or seat, b, at the angles, the two ends bent into a hook or other desirable form for connection to the next link. The other links, C, are formed froln similar wire and of substanT tially the same form as the first, except` that the bending is made at the other angle, d, and
without the base, the two ends at f being bent to engage the other link at the angles b, and,
bed-bottom, and, preferably transversely, are connected by the links D. At the ends of the bed the links are attached to the frame or to the springs, as the ease may be. E F are the two loops which form the spring. They are made from steel or other similar elastic wire, each coiled, the ends crossing each other and the two ends of one joined to the ends of the other, so that the coil of one being attached, as at G, and a strain brought to bear upon the coil of the other, the two will extend longitudinally, drawing the connected ends together, as denoted in broken lines, the reaction causing the springs to return to their original position when the strain is removed.
Preferably, one pair of these springs is arranged for each series of links; as shown in the drawing, one loop attached to the crossbar G of the bed.
These springs are applicable to bed-bottoms of other construction, as the bed-bottom is to springs of other construction.
I claim as my invention- 1. A bed-bottom formed from a series of triangular links, A C, connected alternately at their base and points, and combined with a spring or springs to impart the necessary elasticity, substantially as set forth.
2. The hereindescribed spring for bed-bottoms, consisting of a pair of coiled loops, E F, united at their ends to form acombined spring, substantially as described.
EMERY PARKER.
