`SPRING BED-BOTTOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 283,904, dated August 28, 1883 Application filed 'January 18, 1883. (No model.)
.To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT D. LARAWAY, `a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring Bed-Bottonis;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings is a plan view of a spring bed-bottom constructed according to my invention, Fig. 2, a detail perspective view of the same, and Fig 3 a detail view of one of the wires.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in spring bed-bottoms, and it consists in a series of wires extending in either a longitudinal, lateral, or diagonal direction across the bed-frame, each wire being bentin such a manner as to form a series of coils or loops throughout its entire length, the coils or loops of each wire being placed on the same relative plane, and upon one side only of said wire and at suitable distances apart, and connected together by either plain or suitable spring-hooks or other similar fastenings, a like means connecting the end or side wires with the end or side-rails of the bed-frame, the object of the present invention being to produce a simple, strong, and thoroughly-elastic spring bed-bottom, as each coil or loop draws from four distinct points or in four directions when weight is brought to bear thereon, said bed-bottom being manufactured at a greatlyreduced cost, and by its si1nplicity of construction rendered extremely compact for the purpose of transportation.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents a spring-wire bent in a series of coils or loops, a, a suitable number of such wires being placed in relation to each other at suitable distances apart with their coils orloops on the same relative plane, said coils or loops being connected by suitable hooks, B, or other like fastenings. These wires A extend either longitudinally, laterally, or diagonally across the bed-frame, the end or side wires being connected to the end or side rails thereof, by either vertical or horizontal plain or spring hooks C, or other suitable fastenings, though I prefer a spring-hook which consists of a wire bent in a coil or loop, substantially as shown, similar hooks being used, if desired., for connecting the several coils or loops of the continuous wires in order to give greater elasticity to the bedbotto1n.
It should be understood that the ends or extremities of the looped wires are not connected directly to the bed-frame or the end or side rails thereof by turning their ends over the rails and fastening them by. means of screws, or in other like manner where the extremities of the wiresform the means of fastening; but in place thereof independent means are used consisting of spring-hooks or other similar fastenings. Thus it will be readily seen that when weight is brought upon the bed-bottom, the vcoils or loops of each wire will draw from four points,4 or in four directions, thereby reducing the strain and giving greater elasticity to the entire bottom, a vibratory motion being imparted throughout the length of each wire.
The wire A, although shown as continuous, reaching from side to side of the bed-frame, may be constructed in sections, each of which is formed with two or more 4coils or loops, and connected together in any suitable manner which renders them substantially a continuous wire.
Owing to the simplicity of general construeA tion, this bed-bottom is readily attached to or detached from the frame of a bed, and its several parts, being detachably connected, can be put together in a very small compass for trans portation.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a spring bed-bottom, a series of wires, each of which is bent to form a series of horizontal coils or loops upon one side only thereof, and arranged upon the same relative plane, in combination with spring or other suitable hooked fastenings connecting the coils or loops together and to the bed-frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ELBERT D. LARAWAY.
